Most of the Young Hero stories have been read by nine year old students at Willow Park Elementary School who needed help in their reading skills. Students who were in Grade 3 from 1991 to 1996 will remember many of these stories. We acted some of the out in the classroom. Every kid wanted a leading role. In 1996 I met a young girl who had a role in the story in 1993. She came over to greet me and recalled the exact role she had and the name of the story. Young Hero stories and Grandpa's Bedtime Stories (generally for younger students) were also acted out at the following schools: Chinook Park Elementary School, Calgary, AB. Canyon Meadows Elementary School, Calgary, AB. Cliff Rd. Public School, Tsawwassen, B.C. The E.S.L. (English Second Language) students at Y.W.C.A. in Calgary also acted out several of these stories. | Author: Dick Shand | Publisher: Golden Meteorite Press | Publication Date: Apr 03, 2023 | Number of Pages: 58 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1773698419 | ISBN-13: 9781773698410
Skunk and Badger is a charming new story with the same classic feel as Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad series and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. It is the tale of an unlikely friendship between a set-in-his-ways badger and a free-spirited skunk, complete with whimsical illustrations by Jon Klassen. The story contains sweet and timely lessons in cooperation, communication, friendship, and civility—all shared in such a gentle, droll manner that they never feel didactic or treacly. Badger's heartfelt yet hilarious apology at the end of the book is perhaps the most memorable apology in all of children's literature. The beautifully illustrated hardcover edition is perfect for gift giving, but don't neglect to gift a copy to yourself! Perfect as a read-aloud for any age and a wonderful read-alone for ages 8 and up. A Reader Review by Tiffany Hough of Hot Springs, Arkansas

Would you like to decorate your classroom with fun, hand-drawn anchor charts/posters? Do you simply not have the time to get them done? Well, you have come to the perfect place! I love making these engaging and appealing anchor charts. I also can draw/create any other topic you would like, just contact me directly and ask! My students absolutely love these posters and references them every day. Many of them are visual learners, so the colorful images really help them connect and remember what they have learned. This particular anchor chart is for readers/writers learning all about figurative language. These skills are always such a fun unit, so my students always have such a fun time with this anchor chart! They really love the pictures that go along with each skill as well. **These will be copies unless asked otherwise for a custom poster. They are not laminated, and are printed on normal, anchor chart paper. I ship these out ASAP after being ordered, but please keep in mind once shipped, it is outside of my control. Therefore, if shipping does not meet your expectations, I highly encourage you to please reach out to me first, and we have always been able to work something out to make up for anything that may have occurred after I have sent your package, thanks so much!! Hope you love it :)

"Two birds flying high, A chinese vessel, sailing by. A bridge with three men, sometimes four, A willow tree, hanging o'er. A Chinese temple, there it stands, Built upon the river sands. An apple tree, with apples on, A crooked fence to end my song." This is the poem that describes the Blue Willow pottery design, a china pattern collected around the world that originated in Asia centuries ago and gained popularity in 18th century England. Many designers have created their version of Blue Willow, inspired by the original Chinese blue and white porcelain that was imported into Europe. Photo from replacements.com As part of our Asian art unit, my second graders illustrated the poem on paper plates using blue sharpies, then explored the monochromatic possibilities by mixing tints of blue. We looked at a variety of examples to help us with our designs, and students were encouraged to put their own spin on it. Breaking down the parts and examining them has been fascinating for me and I see a new Blue Willow collection in my kitchen very soon... I have been posting photos of these plates in progress on Instagram (@smartestartists) and it turns out that several other art teachers are either currently involved in this lesson or are planning it for the near future - so there has been lots of great feedback. It is great to see how each one is different, yet still fits the classic design. Thanks to Use Your Coloured Pencils for sharing the paper plate idea! http://useyourcolouredpencils.blogspot.com/2010/04/chinese-willow-pattern-plates.html
Make a ping pong ball float with EASY Bernoulli principle experiment demonstrating how airplanes fly. FUN physics science experiment!
I first saw this lesson at the Use Your Colored Pencils blog, and knew I would be using it someday. Thanks Anne! The supplies needed are minimal: white paper plates, tempera in blue/white/black, brushes and water. We practiced mixing shades and tints of blue for our designs. The cross-curricular opportunities range from poetry and storytelling, to the culture of China and its influence on pottery through out the world. We looked at a piece of Blue Willow china and discussed what images we saw on the plate. I then told the children about the legend which the pattern illustrates. To help remember what we saw, and to help everyone to chose elements to use in their designs, I shared the following poem: 'Two birds flying high, A Chinese vessel, sailing by. A bridge with three men, sometimes four, A willow tree, hanging o'er. A Chinese temple, there it stands, Built upon the river sands. An apple tree, with apples on, A crooked fence to end my song.' They were asked to chose one, or a few of the elements, but some did even more! The children sketched lightly in pencil first, and then began to paint. I reminded them that the border was an important part of their design as well (the ridges of the paper plate can aid them in creating simple border designs.) Great job guys! I love them all! If you might try a Blue Willow lesson, here are some great links to go with your planning: Wikipedia has an article about the Blue Willow pattern: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_pattern A telling of the Blue Willow legend at: http://www.thepotteries.org/patterns/willow.html New Zealand director Veialu Aila-Unsworth made a short animated film about the Blue Willow legend. You can view the trailer here: http://www.bluewillow.co.nz/Trailer.htm And if anyone knows where I can see the entire film, PLEASE let me know!
