1893 Steel-Plate Engraving, Photogravure by Goupil after "Mills Near Rotterdam" by W. Roelofs. Willem Roelofs (March 10, 1822, Amsterdam - May 12, 1897, Berchem) was a Dutch painter, water-colourist, etcher, lithographer and draughtsman. Roelofs was one of the forerunners of the Dutch Revival art, after the Romantic Classicism of the beginning of the 19th century, which led to the formation of The Hague school. His landscapes, especially the early ones with their dominating cloudy skies, demure bodies of water and populated with cattle, are typical for the School of Barbizon. The Columbian Exposition was held from May to October 1893 in Chicago in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the new world. Photogravure on heavy, high quality paper with embossed white border. Inventory records on the back by the Cleveland (Ohio) Institute of Art Library. Sepia, high quality ink, not faded. No tears or rubs. The paper is a medium cream color and has taken on a slightly darker tone around the edges. The corners do have some very minor rubbing from flexing. The framing area is in perfect condition. 16.5 inches x 12.5 inches. Framing area including image, artist/title, and embossed inner white border (that portion of the border that would normally be visible after framing or matting) measures 13" x 9.25". Shipped flat with acid-free wrapping. I will ship to any destination. The actual cost of shipping will be invoiced, including insurance. I do not add handling fees. If you are interested in a group of the gravures I have listed, discounts will apply. CONDITION: That portion described as the "image area" including the inner white border is in excellent condition. If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old print or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique prints allow you to present someone a piece of the past.
