You can still make a cute paper dragon. Find the directions and FREE printable here.) First I folded the plate in half and traced the body. (You can make your own design, or just use my dragon template !) Then, I cut out the head and tail pieces from the excess material. We also folded down our wings. Then, I slid the head and tail pieces between our body pieces and stapled everything together. Then, we went wild and used our favorite paints and Sharpie Markers to decorate our dragons! We were still talking about plate tectonics on Friday. We talked about how scientists theorize that the continents were once connected as one giant super-continent, Pangaea. I cut out South America and Africa and asked them to fit them together as best the could. When they didn't fit together perfectly I asked the kids why the continents wouldn't match perfectly after 250 million years? We talked about erosion and the power of water (waves, storms and such--like the poor people who endured the cyclone in the Cairns region of Australia in the past week or so). Next we did a little activity to show how continents could move without some giant hand pulling them apart. This was perfect for the kids, since it let them "see" the continents move without our touching them. I cut the continents out of foam. The kids folded construction paper. First we set the continents close together with a piece of playdough to weight the continents down. As the kids pulled each side of the construction paper, they could see the continents move apart. We got this idea from Robert Gardners" Earth-Shaking Science Projects About Planet Earth. (affiliate link) The red paper represents the mantle and the next experiment helps the kids understand how and why magma flows. The mantle is hotter than the crust. This is a terrible picture, but it helped the kids see that heat rises. We took ice cold water and poured it into a jar. We dyed some water green and heated it up. Then LD sucked the hot water with a turkey baster (but I think a eye dropper might work better) and slowly let out the hot/green water. The kids could see the green water streaming upwards toward the surface. Create a magical dragon from one paper plate. Inspired by the brand new series, Dragons: Race to the Edge, by the creators of "How to Train Your Dragon," due to be released on Netflix soon, the kids and I created our very own dragon puppets! Using a single paper plate as the base, decorate your dragon with paper collage, paint, fabric scraps or whatever takes your fancy. Materials for basic dragon: Paper plate Scissors Pen Stapler/tape Materials for decorating (optional): Paint Fabric/paper scraps Googly-eyes Craft stick (for a puppet handle) Step 1: Cut your paper plate as shown above. First cut it in half. Cut one half in half again (to make 2 quarters) and then cut one of the quarters in half again (to make 2 eighths). Step 2: Cut the rim of the plate off the quarter plate piece. Step 3: Cut little triangles off the plate rim piece to make the tail and draw a dragon head on the remaining piece. Step 4: Cut out your dragon head and give some shape to the two other small plate pieces (the eighths) for the wings. Your dragon is now ready to decorate and ensemble. Step 5: (optional) Decorate! We decorated our dragons with my favourite fluro tempera paint disks and some metallic easy wash paint. Step 6: When dry and ready, staple (or stick) the pieces of your dragon together. For finishing touches you can go over the dragon's face with a black marker and add googly-eyes. (Everything is adorable with googly-eyes). We also added craft sticks to the bottom to turn ours into puppets. Now you're ready to play! Crafts can be a great extension of an activity to encourage interest and understanding in a topic whilst allowing for creativity and other practical motor skills. We use things like puppets for role-play and find they are wonderful for working on language and other speech skills. These crispy chickpea waffles are a delicious side dish or base for savory toppings! It’s definitely a fast recipe (the waffle batter uses only 4 ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to make), but it needs to sit at room temperature for at least an hour (or up to 9 hours). I usually whisk the batter together in the morning after breakfast—that way it’s waiting for me come dinnertime. The sugar is optional but helps balance the flavors. The crispy, nutty waffles are awesome on their own, or they can be turned into a full meal by topping them with things such as grilled, roasted or sautéed vegetables and/or eggs. One of my favorite ways to eat them is with sautéed spinach, a dollop of plain yogurt, and a sprinkle of roasted chickpeas (get the roasted chickpeas recipe below!). This recipe is adapted from Nicholas Day’s socca waffles on Food 52.
