Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.

That’s how I ended up here—at the worst place on earth. Not only am I not welcomed with open arms at my new home, but I’m the only time-traveling witch who doesn’t know which coven I belong to. Even worse than that, someone is trying to frame me for a curse I couldn’t have cast. I’m supposed to avoid drama, but this place is full of it. By: Tessa Bailey The first in a spicy and unforgettable rom-com duology from #1 New York Times bestseller and tik tok favorite Tessa Bailey, in which a Hollywood "It Girl" is cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn't belong. Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father's dive bar... in Washington. Piper hasn't even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won't last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can't do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She's determined to show her stepfather--and the hot, grumpy local--that she's more than a pretty face. Except it's a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there's an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn't want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan--and this town full of memories--may have already caught her heart.

When I was younger, I was a terrible math student. Unsure of myself. Self-conscious. I remember being in First Grade and feeling overwhelmed during our math period. I always had a stomachache during math. Always wanted to go to the nurse. I certainly never saw myself as a mathematician. No one else ever saw me as one either. Back then, math was either right or wrong. No middle ground. No getting messy in your thoughts and certainly no risk-taking was involved. You knew it or you didn't. I didn't. I never was able to overcome my early hurdles so when I became a teacher, I promised myself that I would make math relevant. Hands-on. Fun. Every child would view him/herself as a mathematician and would be able to use mathematical terms and justify their answers and be encouraged to get messy in the thought process. I wanted to slow down math. Dig deep and let the kids breathe and play around with numbers and concepts. Explore. I so wish we had open-ended questions when I was six years old. They are designed for ALL levels of thinkers and they build confidence and encourage risk-taking. That's why I love to create and use Open-Ended Questions in my own First Grade classroom now. That's why I just uploaded Which One Doesn't Belong? They allow for deeper thinking and a variety of answers. For a nervous math student, I would have appreciated the wiggle room to share my thoughts and justify MY answers. See math through MY eyes. The kids cheer when I use these in my classroom. (You can hear some gasps in first video when this first flashes on screen.) Because students know that there are several answers, participation is high. Sky high. No one is asking to go to the nurse. Isn't that the way it should be? I've used for Do-Nows, homework, Workstations, and I did one for a math warm-up for my observations. Designed for Grades 1-2, there are plenty of slides to last throughout your number sense unit. Grab your FREEBIE here to see for yourself! After discovering the gem that is Which One Doesn't Belong, and writing a blog post about WODB, I knew that I eventually wanted my students to create their own as a project. Now that state testing is finally over, it is nice to be able to finally present this to the class. I had thought about ideas on how to structure the project, but I was still short on some ideas. I came across this tweet from Mishaal Surti, which gave me some inspiration. I created a document that included a rubric as well as some ideas from the tweet that is linked above. Students were allowed to pick their partner, and we headed to the computer lab. I told students that they needed to look at examples of WODBs, which we also did before heading to the computer lab. I then instructed students how to create a Google Doc to insert images and equations. I required students to use their own interests to find four items that one could argue do not belong in a set and also required them to justify using some type of mathematical reasoning. I was really impressed with what some of my students created. Before you look at the projects my kids created, take a look at the Google Doc I created with the assignment and the rubric. Shapes and angles. Which One Doesn't Belong? Items at Chipotle. WODB? Cereals. WODB? Various graphs. WODB? Car Brands. WODB? Fast Food Restaurants. WODB? Symmetrical Superhero Logos. WODB? Money. WODB? Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. WODB? Cities. WODB? Various Equations. WODB? Musical Notes. WODB? Since there are several field trips today, I was unable to let my geometry class present. However, I had enough kids in attendance in my Algebra II classes, so I went ahead and let them present. I really enjoyed listening to their arguments and reasoning of their peers' projects. I definitely recommend this project for a one to two day assignment. Feel free to comment if you have any questions.
This is a language development resource in Google Drive. It can be completed fully online! Students will practice identify how objects go together, determine which doesn't belong in the group, and naming the category. There are 2 levels of tasks. LEVEL 1 Each card shows four objects. Students must determine which one doesn’t fit with the other three. To indicate their answer, students drag and drop the red NO symbol onto the picture they wish to exclude. Includes 20 tasks. LEVEL 2 These are similar to the level 1 tasks except students sort all four objects onto a chart to show which ones go together and which is the “oddball” item. They also complete a cloze sentence task to name the category/explain why the oddball doesn’t fit with the other items. Includes 5 tasks. The Google Drive file includes the main resource file for students plus a separate file for you that includes answer keys. This is a great activity for independent practice or for speech language teletherapy sessions. __________________________________________________________________________________ Upon purchase, TpT will automatically make a copy of the Google Drive folder that contains this resource and transfer it to your own Google Drive account. I have been teaching analogies to elementary students for years, so I felt validated when I read the research about teaching analogies. In Marzano, Pollock, and Pickering’s book Classroom Instruction That Works, the authors write about 9 instructional strategies that have the greatest effect on student achievement. Similarities and Differences is one of those strategies. When you teach analogies, your students are making comparisons. At the lowest level, these comparisons may be simple sorting activities. But at the highest level, similarities and differences include analogies which is basically reasoning by comparison.
