A wedding is certainly the biggest and the most exciting event of a couple’s life. Being a woman, you must have been fantasizing about your big day right from your childhood, and you want it to be enchanting and magical, just like a fairytale with no flaws at all! However, even months before the wedding, things start to go awry and become complicated over time. And (especially) as the day arrives, you barely have the energy or the time to handle everything by yourself in order to make the day impeccable. This is where the role of a day-of wedding coordinator comes into play! Choosing such a coordinator to give you a helping hand in the planning and management of your wedding day has always been a hot debate among the brides. Make a quick search over the internet and you will find plenty of brides vouching for how it was the best decision that they ever made while a whole lot of them may as well be trying to persuade you on how hiring a day-of coordinator will be an utter waste of your precious money. This is what creates a major confusion for all the brides to-be who keep wondering whether or not opting for a coordinator would be the right way to go. Is A Day-Of Wedding Coordinator Worth The Money? There is no argument over the fact that choosing a coordinator for your wedding day isn’t as convenient of a task as it may seem to be. To begin with, the variety of professionals is mindboggling. With so much already on your plate, it gets hard to choose the one that would be suitable for the kind of event you want your wedding day to be. The good news is that more often than not, the venue that you choose for the wedding day may also offer you a coordinator who is working for them and can help you with the planning and management of your fairytale event. The bad news, however, is that a lot of the times, the professional that the venue offers is not the type suitable for managing the event as per your expectations, which brings you back to step number 1. Furthermore, hiring a day-of wedding coordinator is also a financial choice, which makes the decision that much difficult, especially if you are running on a tight budget! The Benefits Of Having A Day-Of Wedding Coordinator You can certainly not make an informed decision about choosing a coordinator for your big day if you are not familiar with the pros and cons of it. There certainly are a few major benefits of having a coordinator by your side, which is why a lot of the brides make no compromise when it comes to hiring one. We have put together a brief list of benefits to help you understand why hiring a day-of wedding coordinator could be an ideal choice! Benefit #1: They help put together a detailed timeline of your big day Uncertainty is your greatest foe when it comes to planning your big day. A professional day-of coordinator will help you construct a detailed timeline of your wedding, highlighting what will happen, when will it happen, and how it will be managed. This plan will help you make sure that the event goes as smoothly as possible! Benefit #2: You won’t have to stress about anything regarding the timeline the day of your wedding Having the peace of mind that a professional has planned for and will be managing the timeline as per your expectations on your big day is a surefire way of minimizing any blows or shocks during the ceremony. Benefit #3: They have a Plan B for any possible mishap Being in business for years, such professionals are familiar with the common mishaps that may occur on your big day. Their experience enables them to think of an alternative plan for all such mishaps, ensuring that your wedding goes as smoothly and flawlessly as it possibly could. Benefit #4: They’ll coordinate all of the vendors so you won’t have to Another major benefit of hiring a day-of wedding coordinator is that you will be relieved from the stress of dealing with all of the vendors on the big day. All you will have to do is let the coordinator know your timeline and let them do the rest. Throughout day before and the day-of your wedding, vendors will be busying about the venue. You don't want to be the person on point to contact; you've got other things to worry about. Your day-of coordinator will allow you to truly focus on what matters: you and your future partner for life. Benefit #5: Consider the wedding rehearsal planned and taken care of The planning frenzy for your fairytale wedding begins a lot earlier than the actual day. It won’t be wrong to say that planning the rehearsal and finding the right timeline takes just as much of your energy as the actual event. Thanks to the day-of coordinator, all your worries will be shrunk to nothing as far as planning and the management of the rehearsal is concerned. Benefit #6: They will keep the bridal party, groom, and the groomsmen on task Remember, your groom already has a lot on his plate for the wedding day and the last thing he needs is you nagging him about his groomsmen’s tasks and how they need to be performed impeccably. Provided that you have hired a day-of wedding coordinator, there goes another of your responsibilities off your shoulders. Communicating with the groom and the groomsmen and informing them about their tasks and the timeline is now the coordinator’s responsibility. Benefit #7: They will take care of decorating the reception area, dining tables, and more while you’re busy taking pictures and chatting with guests Now comes the most important responsibility of them all - managing the décor for your wedding day. Of course, as a bride, you would want to chat with the guests and get some memorable portraits made on your big day. No one wants to spend their time on planning and managing the décor for their big day. Hire a day-of coordinator, and you are relieved from this task as well. You are free to enjoy your day as you please! Benefit #8: They’ll answer all of the DJ’s pestering questions Like all the other tasks, all you have to do is to inform the coordinator about your choice for the music on your big day and you would no longer have to be frustrated with your DJ coming up to you with pesky questions every five minutes. You want answers, DJ? Go talk to my coordinator. It’s as simple as that! Benefit #9: They’ll collect all of the gifts and help with a takedown at the end of the night You will definitely be getting a huge numebr gifts and presents on your wedding day, as it’s a grand tradition. While it sounds exciting, receiving, collecting, and bringing them back to your home is not exciting even the least bit. Hiring a day-of wedding coordinator will ensure that you are responsible for the fun part of opening the presents, while the rest is being taken care of by the coordinator. Reasons You Might Not Want A Day-Of Wedding Coordinator Like anything else, there can’t be all pros and no cons to choosing a day-of coordinator. There are a few reasons why you might not want to hire such a professional. In order to let you make an informed decision, we have compiled of list of the drawbacks as well. If you find yourself falling in one of these categories, you may want to rethink your decision of hiring a day-of wedding coordinator. However, a word of precaution, considering the benefits that hiring one has to offer, you have to be very careful in considering and evaluating the negatives of employing a wedding day coordinator. Reason#1: You have a really small wedding If you are one of those couples who have decided to have a small, albeit cute, wedding with just close relatives, then opting for a day-of coordinator may be a waste of money. Since you won’t have to plan and manage a lot of the tasks in the first place, hiring a coordinator would just be an added expense with no use! Looking for some useful wedding planning resources? This planner is all that you need to plan a successful wedding on your own! Reason #2: Your mom, aunt, and/or close friend offered to be your day-of wedding coordinators As an extension to the small wedding argument, since there won’t be a lot to plan and manage, your friends and family members will be more than sufficient to give you a helping hand and take the stress off your shoulders. Reason #3: You have a really tight budget As mentioned earlier, opting for a day-of wedding coordinator is a financial decision. Hiring a professional for his/her services will cost you a bit, which is why it would be a good idea to avoid any excess expenditure in case you are running on a tight budget. Reason #4: The venue had a coordinator for you It is quite possible that the venue you’ve chosen may be offering a competent wedding coordinator that you can work with. Listen to what they have to offer, meet with their coordinator, and communicate with the professional before finalizing the decision of whether or not they’re suitable for your event. If he/she is competent enough, there’s no need to spend extra on an additional coordinator. Reason #5: You’d like to be in complete control of the whole day Last but not the least, if you are one of those brides who enjoy every bit of being in control of their entire wedding, then you don’t need a coordinator by your side, now do you? Conclusion: Yes, you should get a day-of coordinator All in all, hiring a day-of wedding coordinator is one decision that you won’t regret making. There are only a few instances when hiring such a professional won’t be useful for you. Other than that, you are destined to consider it a fine investment for your fairytale wedding. Considering the benefits that you get to relish, you should certainly spend the money on hiring a coordinator for your big day if your budget allows you to. You’ve probably seen the popularity of wedding hashtags explode over the past several years. The wedding hashtag has become a social media staple for sharing wedding pictures, connecting with guests, and documenting memories that you’ll cherish in years to come. Wedding hashtags can range from simple (such as #KateAndJon2018) to incredibly clever and punny (think of phrases that play off the couple’s names or a new take on an old cliché, like #HappilyEverAdams). No matter what your hashtag, using one at your wedding can be a memorable addition to the usual wedding photos and videos. Don't worry--I get it! This is your special day, and you want everything about it to be unique. Sometimes creating the perfect wedding hashtag can feel like playing the game, Concentration--you have so many unique hashtag ideas pop into your head throughout your day right up until the point you need to write them down and pick the best one. Super. Frustrating. I suggest reading through the lists of hashtags above to jog your memory or perhaps inspire you! Then read these tips on creating your best wedding hashtag: Use the couple’s names to create a play on words. Obviously, you may be limited by the couple’s names, but consider first and last names in your brainstorm. Try putting their names in their favorite movie, song, show, and book titles. Look up popular phrases (like "knight in shining armor," "a man after my own heart," or "blow your mind") and try fitting the couple's names into them. Use the wedding venue location. Maybe the couple is getting married in a unique destination; consider including the location in your hashtag. Don’t limit yourself to the city or venue name, either—consider using terms like “woods,” “mountains,” “beach,” and other general descriptors. Don't forget the ceremony date. Another popular way to build a wedding hashtag is to include the numbers that make up the date. Consider the couple’s hobbies or interests. Do the bride and groom both live for rock-climbing? Do they have a common hobby or interest that they enjoy together? In certain situations, this could be incorporated into the wedding hashtag. Use a timeless classic: alliteration. This may be a throwback to high school English class, but alliteration is one of the most commonly-used tools in memorable hashtags. If you need a refresher, alliteration means the use of words that start with the same letter to make a phrase that rolls off the tongue easily. A few examples are #MrAndMrsMartinez or #WallaceWedding. If you're looking for alliteration, a few of the hashtags we used for the A-Z last names were alliterative. Check out that list for inspiration! Rhymes. Don’t be afraid to try rhyming some aspect of the wedding for a fun hashtag! A fun twist on incorporating names into commonly used phrases is to replace a word that rhymes with the name with the name itself. For example, if a couple's last name is going to be Pine, you could use #FloatingOnCloudPine for the wedding! Tandem Tree The Wedding Hashtag Creation Process What’s the best process for making a hashtag? Try brainstorming a few different ideas. Don’t be afraid to write down silly or off-beat ideas—it’s all a part of the creative process! After you have a list of possibilities, try narrowing it down to the best-fitting options. Don’t forget to run the list by a few close family members, friends, and members of the wedding party for extra input. Sometimes, another person can bring a fresh set of eyes to your ideas. Crowd sourcing the hashtag is an option, but more opinions means it may be harder to please everyone. If you’re the bride or groom, it may be easier to create the hashtag yourself and simply ask for feedback. If the bride or groom doesn’t want to make up the hashtag, it may be best to appoint a trusted friend or member of the bridal party to come up with the hashtag with some help from a few other social media savvy close friends. Jessica Ranae Photography Conclusion Social media is a great way for people to connect to one another. Instagram is one of the leading outlets for posting wedding photos, and a unique hashtag is a cool new way to commemorate your big day. Have fun with it and you’ll look back on your wedding hashtag for years after the wedding! Please share your wedding hashtag tips and ideas in the comments below! If you’re at the point in the wedding planning process where you’re starting to think about what songs to play at your reception, it’s safe to assume that you’ve booked the venue, planned the menu, and picked out the flowers. But now it’s time to hammer out those little details. What song will you dance your first tune to as a married couple? What song will the bride dance to with her dad? What song represents the special bond the groom shares with his mother? Not to worry—we’ve compiled a list of 30 mother son dance songs that are perfect for grooms and moms of all types. Jessica Ranae Photography 30 Mother-Son Dance Songs for Your Wedding Reception Brides, Choose Your Battles Wisely Finding it difficult to come up with the perfect mother-son dance song? The first thing you should realize is that the only people who should truly have a say in this choice are the groom and his mother. Brides, don’t step on any toes here. Even if his mother loves you like her own daughter, it’s likely to be an emotional day for her. She may be viewing this wedding as though she’s gaining a daughter rather than losing a son. But the truth is that you, as the bride, are the focal point of the day. Let his mother have this special moment with her son, and when they agree on a tune they want to dance to together, keep quiet and just let it be (even if it’s an overplayed hit that makes you squirm and cringe). Find the Song That Best Represents the Relationship Before you settle on a mother-son dance song, we suggest Googling the lyrics. Make sure that the message of the lyrics is actually the message you think it is. It should come as no surprise that many of us sing the wrong song lyrics—even to the classics that we’ve heard our entire lives. So take the extra minute to read the lyrics to make sure the song you think is endearing actually is representative of the mother-son relationship you share. Laura Lee Photography Don’t Be Afraid to Buck All the Trends There’s no rule that says your mother-son dance song has to be a slow jam. If there’s a special tune that means something to the two of you and it requires an all-out choreographed number or the display of both of your best (or worst) dance moves, go for it. No one will care about this moment as much as you two. It should be your special moment, so choose a tune that has personal meaning to you. 30 Songs That Might be Perfect for You Everyone has their own taste in music, so we’ve put together a list of 30 great options and organized them by categories and genres so that you can easily find your special song. The Classics: “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor If you’re a lover of classic rock or want to choose a song that everyone at your reception will know, these five timeless choices are simply perfect for any wedding celebration. With lyrics such as “Oh I won’t be afraid just as long as you stand by me,” Ben E. King’s classic is a time-honored favorite that everyone knows and everyone can relate to. It’s one of our personal favorites on this list and even though it’s a classic, it’s not necessarily an obvious choice. Eric Vest Photography Popular: “Have I Told You Lately” by Rod Stewart “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel “She’s Got a Way” by Billy Joel “Thank You For Loving Me” by Bon Jovi “Love Of My Life” by Carly Simon It’s hard not to categorize Billy Joel’s greatest hits as classics, but his pop success is undeniable. With the lyric “she’s got a smile that heals me,” Joel’s much-loved “She’s Got A Way” is one mother-son dance song that never goes out of style. Upbeat: “Loves Me Like a Rock” by Paul Simon “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” by James Taylor “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the Intruders “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys Not in the mood to slow dance with your mama? Pick a song with an upbeat tempo and a dance-worthy beat. “I’ll Always Love My Mama” lets you get your groove on and get down with your mom in a way that’s sure to entertain your guests and bring a smile to the bride’s face. With the lyric “she’s my favorite girl, you only get one, you only get one,” it’s a surefire mom-pleaser, especially if early ‘70s style is her favorite music era. Brian Bossany Photography Country/Southern Rock: “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney “Then They Do” by Trace Adkins “He Gets That From Me” by Reba McEntire “Mama’s Song” by Carrie Underwood “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd There are so many country tunes with sentimental lyrics that this list could have easily included 30 songs of its own. “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts takes our top spot as our favorite country mother-son dance song, mostly for the endearing lyric “my wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to.” R&B: “A Song For Mama” by Boyz II Men “Hero” by Mariah Carey “Hey Mama” by Kanye West “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack Kanye West’s “Hey Mama” may not be an obvious choice, but this mother-son dance song delights with the lyrics “come on mommy just dance wit me, let the whole world see your dancing feet.” It’s the perfect choice for any mom and groom who wants to break tradition and create their own set of rules. One One Photography Acoustic: “Love Is a Verb” by John Mayer “Go On” by Jack Johnson “Wildflowers” by Tom Petty “In My Life” by The Beatles “Teach Your Children” by Crosby Stills & Nash “1, 2, 3, 4” by Plain White T’s If you want a soft acoustic tune, all of these are great choices, but Jack Johnson’s “Go On” always gets us with its tender lyric “I see you slowly swim away, cause the light is leaving town, to a place that I can’t be.” If you want a tearjerker that doesn’t sound like one, this is the tune for you. Brian Bossany Photography Whether you’re a hipster, a hip hop fan, a country music fanatic, or a classic rock aficionado, this list just may help you to find that perfect song for the mother-son dance at your wedding reception. Remember, this tender and special moment is one in a lifetime and the only people that should make this decision are the groom and his mom. Do your own thing and share this moment with a tune that means something to you. If you don’t have a special tune or a favorite anthem that you and mom share, take some time out before the wedding to spend an afternoon with your mom. Listen to a few of each other’s favorite tunes and pick the ones that mean the most to you. You just might find that the time spent making the selection together may end up to be one of the most special moments that the two of your share together before the big day. You may also like…
There are two types of little girls in this world: those who play house and those who play wedding. In reality, things aren’t that different once we grow up. Some women can’t wait to plan their weddings and others can’t wait to actually be married. I can’t tell you how many people warned me about the “morning after.” The morning after the wedding, that is. People described the comedown you feel after the biggest, most important day of your life is over. But for me, the wedding was just the beginning. I couldn’t wait to start my life with my new husband and actually be married. Not everyone feels that way. If you are unsure which category you fit into, here are our top 15 signs you are ready to tie the knot. 15 Sure Signs You’re Ready for Marriage: One:One Photography 1. You’ve stopped thinking in “me” terms and started thinking in “we” terms. When responding to a recent email, I found myself writing “we” several times. We would love to meet for dinner. We love that restaurant. Obviously, I meant my husband and myself but even before we wed, I thought of us as a team. No one is saying you need to sacrifice your independence, but if you notice you automatically include your significant other in your thinking, then you are thinking in we. 2. You think beyond the wedding. Some women are just wedding crazy. They create vision boards, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations, all in the hopes of planning the perfect day. But they haven’t thought past that perfect day. If you find yourself thinking about the day after the wedding, and the day after that, and the day after that… you are probably more into being married than just a big white dress. Maison Meredith Photography 3. You’ve stopped checking out other guys. Remember that hot bartender at your favorite dive? He doesn’t even register any longer. Forget daydreaming about him. Yeah, you can appreciate a hot guy, but the only dude who makes your heart flutter is your future-hubby. And that’s a good thing. 4. You’ve stopped playing “what if” about the past. Yes, you are super in love with your future spouse, but there’s always been that nagging feeling that you never had closure with your college BF. Until now. Suddenly, you hear his name and just shrug. You no longer wonder what would have been, could have been, or should have been. He’s the past and you’re all about the future. Brian Bossany Photography 5. You are making plans together for the future. So the wedding is over…now what? You guys have been making plans. Not just dinner plans, but real, serious, joint-bank-account plans. You no longer wonder if you guys will spend Thanksgiving together, now it’s a matter of whose family you spend it with. No longer do you consider just your own future happiness, but you’ve made your future hubby’s happiness a priority as well. 6. You’re daydreaming about children. We all played house growing up and sometimes this involved our pretend children. Suddenly, you are no longer thinking in terms of pretend. You’ve started daydreaming about what your future children will look like. Not in vague terms, but actually wondering if they’ll have your hubby’s blue eyes, dimpled chin, or wavy hair. And you can’t wait to find out! Alex Anne Photography 7. You don’t find his little quirks annoying. He snores—so what? He leaves the seat up—no big deal! He leaves the cabinet doors open in every room…okay, that last one is from personal experience. But suddenly, your SO’s little quirks don’t seem so annoying any longer. Actually, they’ve become quite endearing. And when suddenly he puts the toilet seat down, you’re concerned something is wrong. 8. You share in the finances. While this might seem a no-brainer for some, you’d be surprised how many couples keep separate bank accounts even after they’re married. Once you start living with your future significant other, if you’re both thinking “this thing we’ve got going is permanent,” opening a joint account is a big sign that you both are in it for the long haul. Combining finances (direct deposit, bills, and paychecks) immediately ties the two of you together and opens a window into how you run and organize your life. One:One Photography 9. You have no secrets from each other, even the weirdest ones. Sometimes to relax, you like watching bad Bruce Willis movies while wearing facemasks and eating Ritz crackers in bed. I’m not saying I know anyone who does this, but it’s a little strange. It’s definitely not something you’ve shared with people in the past. But your soon-to-be Mr. thinks it’s adorable and has even sprung for a Netflix account so you can feed your Bruce Willis habit. 10. You feel comfortable being brutally honest and don’t worry that he’ll hate you. Time to pluck those nose hairs. What’s the deal with that back hair? That joke about my mom…not funny. In the first blush of a new relationship, you walk a fine line between being lovey-dovey and being yourself. You don’t want to say anything that might hurt his feelings, no matter how true it may be. But once you know your relationship is for real, you realize being honest in every way is the best way to be. And you know he won’t hold it against you. He actually loves you more for it. Brian Bossany Photography 11. You’re OK when he’s brutally honest with you. I never ever want to be told I look fine. It’s a four-letter word to me. Gorgeous? Okay. Horrible. Umm, okay. Just not FINE. It’s so blah sounding. My husband knows he can be honest with me and while yes, I may pout and complain, I never get mad at him. A big part of our relationship is built on pure honesty, and I wouldn’t change that. I know I can rely on him to keep it real when the going gets tough. And I need that. Most couples do. 12. You happily sacrifice for each other. Suddenly your SO is happy to skip poker night with the guys or forgo his annual trip to Las Vegas. You didn’t ask him to and to be honest, he doesn’t even seem to care. Likewise, you spend your hard earned stash on that gadget he was eyeing instead of those gorgeous Ferragamo flats. It doesn’t even feel like a sacrifice. Seeing his happy, smiling face makes it all worth it. Callie V Photography 13. You would trust him with your pets’ lives. My hubs and I had barely been dating 18 months when my dog got really sick with pancreatitis. I had to fly to Los Angeles for a family obligation and left him in charge. My dog took a turn for the worse while I was away. My future-hubby carried my poor pup through the streets of New York, flagged down a police officer, and managed to get my baby to an emergency pet vet. Side note: My husband is not an animal person. The ‘first look’ has become a popular trend. This new, intimate photo-op conflicts with one of the most notable superstitions: The groom must not see the bride before the wedding. It’s no wonder this topic was pitched for our Big Day Q&A series! Before you pick a tradition to take on, it may help to know the pros and cons of first look wedding photos—it’s not as simple as breaking with tradition or not. There’s lighting, location, and time to consider, not to mention the different ways you can reveal your beauty to your beau. By the end of this blog, you should have a better idea if this photo-op is right for you. Purrington Photography The Pros & Cons Before I jump into the pros and cons, let’s discuss why superstition surrounds the first look in the first place. When arranged marriages were commonplace, the ceremony was basically a business deal—one that could fall through if the groom-to-be opted out. In other words, if he decided his fiancé wasn’t pretty enough, he could bail. To prevent this from happening, it was decided that a groom couldn’t see the bride before the ceremony. This is also why veils exist! They were originally designed to cover a woman’s face until both parties said, “I do.” How nice. So seeing the bride before the nuptials doesn’t exactly lead to bad luck—but it could lead to a runaway groom. Now that we’ve taken the superstition card off the table, here are the real pros and cons of having a pre-wedding reveal: Brian Bossany Photography Pros: -You have more time to take pictures. Waiting until after the ceremony for photography means your guests have to wait too. It also means you miss more of the reception. -You may lose the light. Depending on the time of year and the start of your ceremony, if you wait to take pictures until after the nuptials, you may lose ideal lighting. Make sure your photographer has your wedding day timeline on-hand to prevent this from happening. -You can calm each other down. I expect you’ll be a bit nervous as you get ready for the big day. Who better to calm you down than the one going through it with you? Take a moment to breathe, reflect, and prepare for that walk down the aisle. -The photos are unmatched. If you stage it right, the pictures you’ll get from a first look are unbeatable. Your fresh bridal style, his nerves, your smile, his tears… One:One Photography Cons: -More sleep! If you cut a pre-ceremony photo-session, you have more time for beauty rest. -More time to get ready. We all know that hair never cooperates when you need it to, makeup can smudge, and last-minute slip-ups happen. If you forgo the photos, you have more time to perfect your look. -Sunset, anyone? If you time it right, you could be taking your newlywed shots at sunset instead of in the morning. Both are beautiful, but there’s nothing like a setting sun to enhance a bridal glow. -Your guests will be a part of the big moment. Sharing the first sighting one-on-one is intimate, but sharing it with your friends and family is quite special. -You’ll be married! How much fun will it be to pose as man and wife? That just-married feeling will make the images even more magical. Anita Martin Photography Tips for this pre-wedding photoshoot. If you’ve decided to go for it, there are a few things to keep in mind before the big day. What do you want to do during this special moment? Many couples simply take it all in! It’s an opportunity to fully embrace the day ahead and the promise you’re making. It’s also a good opportunity to calm each other down—you’re going through the same thing after all. If you’re religious, take a moment to say a prayer. You can say one as a couple and gather your bridal party for another. Where will this moment take place? Since time is a factor, I recommend choosing a special spot near where you’re taking the rest of your pics. Things to keep in mind are weather (have a back-up option) and lighting. Choose this spot prior to the big day and let your photographer know the details! When will this moment take place? Give yourselves enough time! I recommend 30 minutes to an hour. Who should walk? Another common question is whether the bride should walk to her fiancé or the other way around. It really depends on the location and your attire. If you’re outside, nervous to dirty your dress before it floats down the aisle, the groom should come to you. If you get to float down a staircase and see his eyes light up, you should go to him. It’s all a matter of personal preference. Who wants to tap whose shoulder? You could also do a reveal with dad and have him walk you to your fiancé! One:One Photography Need-to-Know Idea: One of my favorite twists on this tradition includes balloons! The bride and groom each carry a bunch of balloons in front of them, covering their look. The photographer counts to three, and the couple lets go of the balloons, revealing their style and surprised faces. It’s whimsical, adorable, and easy to do! Unique first look ideas. If you’ve decided to pass on this modern tradition, you can still enjoy the intimate experience in different ways. Some don’t even include the groom! 1. Blindfold the groom. You’re not going to ruin his makeup with this trick, and it allows you to share a moment before you take that walk down the aisle. You can embrace, share a kiss, or simply hold hands and ease each other’s nerves. The photos will be pretty funny, too! 2. Read your letters. Many couples write letters to each other which can be read before the nuptials—another reason why waterproof makeup is a must. Instead of reading them alone, stand on either side of a wall or open door—holding hands—and read them together! A little squeeze of the fingers or a sniffle caused by happy tears will make them even more meaningful. Rebekah Hoyt Photography 3. Share a reveal with your ‘maids! They may be there while you’re getting ready, but towards the end of your hair and makeup, and before you put on your dream gown, go in a separate room. Then reveal your bridal style to your best friends! You know the looks on their faces will be worth capturing. One:One Photography & Studio 220 Photography 4. This one gets me every time—I’m actually tearing up while writing this. If you don’t try this tradition with your fiancé, share it with dad. His little girl has found a new leading man, so give him a special, one-on-one moment to see her off. He thinks you’re beautiful every moment of every day, but this day is different. You’ll treasure the memory forever! The same memory can be shared with mom, too! Will you take on this trend? The pros and cons of first look wedding photos are even. The images could be incredible and you’d have them forever. But there’s nothing like that moment you appear at the end of the aisle, he sees you, perhaps he sheds a tear, and the whole room gasps at your beauty. Will you do a reveal before the vows? The skin care industry isn’t a five billion dollar industry for nothing. It shouldn’t be any wonder! The eternal quest for youth and beauty begins with great skin. And no other person is as demanding of her skin as a bride. The road to having flawless skin begins with a natural skincare routine way before the big day. Why is this important? Great skin enhances your natural beauty! And who wouldn’t want gorgeous photos to look at in the years to come? In search of products that actually work safely? Ditch the junk! Go for natural, sustainable, and effective! Product lines such as Penny & Pine specialize in bridal skincare routine. Read on for the best pre-wedding skincare routine (in a nutshell!). How to Create the Best Pre-Wedding Skincare Routine A good bridal skincare routine can get quite expensive. But spending on an organic and natural skin care line before your wedding is well worth the investment! After all, a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Now is the time to pull out all the stops to achieve that flawless look. Penny & Pine is the ultimate bridal skin care line. They understand what brides go through (hello, stress-induced, pimples!). So brides (and anyone looking for effective skincare solutions) can simply think less about their pre-wedding skincare routine, and instead focus on what matters the most – preparing for their big day! We highly recommend that brides-to-be begin this routine a year before the wedding to allow for maximum and most visible results! Morning Routine Step 1: Cleanse A skincare routine always begins with a thorough cleansing. Skin cleansers are not created equal. Penny & Pine understands this by heart, which is why all their products are made gentle enough for all skin types. Cleansing is a crucial first step. We recommend that you cleanse twice. Once to remove makeup, dirt, and other clogging elements. A second time, to get deep down into the pores. Is your skin sensitive? Penny and Pine’s Detox Brightening Cleanser comes highly recommended. Step 2: Cleanse again The second cleansing gets deep down into the pores. The secret is in proper exfoliation. A good exfoliating cleanser removes daily build-up and residue while calming and soothing the skin. Step 3: Serum Never skips serums in your bridal skincare routine! Serums protect the skin and lock in moisture. They will do wonders for any skin type. This is especially important as our skin matures. Step 4: Moisturize Why use a moisturizer when you’ve just put on serum? A good daily face moisturizer with SPF gives your skin a boost of moisture while protecting it from sun damage. Sun exposure is a part of life. But too much and not enough protection from it can severely damage your skin. Dermatologists recommend using SPF on the face daily. Step 5: Eye Cream The skin around our eyes is extremely thin. No matter how young someone is, it never is too early to regularly moisturize and protect this sensitive area with a good eye cream. Step 6: Primer Most skincare routines end with an eye cream. But we want you to go the extra mile by applying a primer. A primer is the secret top models and actresses use to achieve that picture-perfect complexion on and off screen. Use on its own or as a protective layer underneath your makeup. Evening Routine Step 1: Cleanse After a long day at work, you want your skin to relax and recharge as well. Just like your morning routine, we highly recommended doing the two-step cleanse. Once to remove makeup, dirt, and other clogging elements. A second time, to get deep down into the pores. If your skin IS sensitive, Penny and Pine’s Detox Brightening Cleanser comes highly recommended. Oily or problematic skin? Try the Rose Hip Seed Cleanser by Penny & Pine. The latter leaves a fresh, rosy scent you’d love to fall asleep to. Step 2: Cleanse again As with your morning routine, the second-step cleanse is just as crucial. Step 2 gets deep down into the pores. The secret is in proper exfoliation. A good exfoliating cleanser removes daily build-up and residue while calming and soothing the skin. If you have blemish-prone skin, it would be a great idea to use an exfoliating cleanser the second time you cleanse. Step 3: Toner Never skip on toner. Aside from exfoliating skin and deeply cleaning it, applying toner can shrink pores and restore your skin’s pH balance. It also adds a layer of protection since it can tighten cell gaps. A bonus that most brides don’t know? Toning can prevent ingrown hair. Step 4: Serum Serums protect the skin and lock in moisture. They will do wonders for any skin type because it prevents dry, cracked skin. Serums become especially important during the winter months. It helps your skin cope with drying winds and changing temperature. The best part? Serums help repair sun damage by reducing wrinkles. Step 5: Facial Oil Facial oils are magical. It works for all skin types (even oily skin types) and works so fast, you can see results overnight. With continuous use, your skin can produce collagen quickly. This means that it can reverse aging by improving skin elasticity. Step 6: Eye Cream Applying eye creams twice a day helps maximize the moisturizing and healing effects around your eyes. Remember that the skin around your eyes is extremely thin. No matter how young someone is, it never is too early to protect this sensitive area with a good eye cream. Of course, it goes without saying that regular use helps prevent wrinkles from developing around your eyes. Step 7: Spot Treatment Products that produce real results overnight are rare! But they exist and Penny and Pine’s Blemish Relief is one of them. Use this spot treatment a few times on your blemish. After it is relatively flat, discontinue use and simply apply transformation oil on the blemish to repair the skin Step 8: Overnight Mask An overnight mask a few times a week will leave your skin vibrant and supple. After cleansing and toning, you can skip the rest of the steps and apply this mask instead! The mask deeply cleanses and moisturizes the skin. Penny and Pine’s Overnight Plant Cell Mask is a light, breathable mask that can be used as a 20-minute peel-off. For even better results? Leave overnight and feel the difference in the morning! Other Recommended Pre-Wedding Beauty Steps The whole point of starting a pre-wedding skin care routine is to look your best on your big day. But in addition to this, there are other recommended beauty tips that brides can do to look extra gorgeous! Grow Those lashes – Well, if mother nature missed out on this, help is here! Beautiful, think lashes can now be yours with this lash growth serum. Apply on eyebrows to help thicken them out enough to shape and style. As the world changes, so do customs, and wedding traditions are no exception. Your wedding is an incredibly personal event, but the ceremony and reception are full of traditions people have come to expect. The white gown. Being “given away.” The bouquet and garter tosses. The list of things goes on and on, and it’s easy to feel obligated to include them. However, it’s becoming more common to customize your celebration to suit who you are. Don’t feel like you need to include certain wedding traditions just to please someone else! This is your day, so make it your own. Here are our top tips on wedding traditions that are OK to break on the big day. Flow Event Group Don’t Worry about What Other People Think Many couples don’t want to stray from tradition because they worry what their guests will think. It’s easy to feel like every departure from tradition makes a statement. However, wedding traditions have changed and emerged over the years. This is all because people dared to break the status quo and create new trends! Did you know that men’s wedding rings were uncommon until World War II? Some wedding traditions are not as old as you think. This is even more reason to go with the flow of history and focus on what makes sense for you and your partner. Here are some examples of breaking tradition that may seem controversial, but don’t let that stop you! Wearing a white dress. While white gowns scream bridal, we’re already seeing more brides to opt for other colors. Some choose ivory, cream, or pastel pink, while others make bolder choices like bright colors or even black. The tradition of wearing white dresses comes from Queen Victoria. She popularized the white gown in 1840. At the time, most brides wore bright colors on their wedding day and saved the gowns to wear again. Victoria’s gown was white to show off the lace and signify wealth. Even she wore colored flowers on her gown, though, along with an 18-foot train! Don’t be afraid to wear whatever color you want. Anyone who has a problem with it obviously doesn’t realize that white was once a trend, too! Girls as bridesmaids, guys as groomsmen. The new trend of having mixed-gender wedding parties is revolutionizing the wedding world. The idea that brides and grooms can’t have close friends of the opposite sex is antiquated. Our wedding traditions don’t need to reinforce this! In some cases, wanting to have someone of the opposite sex on your bridal party is less “revolutionary,” yet still important to you. Siblings are a common example of this. Maybe the groom is really close with his sister. Why shouldn’t she stand next to him as his best-woman on the big day? While traditionally she would have to stand on the bride’s side, she’ll likely be most comfortable standing on the side of the person she feels closest to. If you’re worried about how this will look in photos, don’t! Here are plenty of great examples of mixed-gender wedding party pictures. These photos show different ways to mix-and-match color schemes. Mixed-gender wedding parties can still achieve a cohesive look among the bridal party as a whole. Taking formal portraits. Maybe you don’t care for a formal style of wedding photography. The idea of working through a long and tedious shot list bores you. Couple with parents. Couple with grandparents. Couple with bride’s immediate family. Couple with all family. And on and on. If you don’t care about having formal portraits of all these traditional shots, then skip them! Many couples are choosing to have a more photojournalistic style of wedding photography. This way, the photographer captures candid moments throughout the big day. The flow is never interrupted for a formal portrait session, but you still end up with countless candid memories. These memories can be all the sweeter because they weren’t posed. Having a receiving line. While having a receiving line after the ceremony is not tradition everywhere in the US, many people have come to expect it. This is their chance to say congratulations, shake your hand, give unsolicited advice, etc. Yet many couples don’t want to follow up a magical ceremony by greeting each of their guests all in a row. This is especially true for large weddings. Not only will it take ages to greet each person, it also means guests who sat in the back have to wait forever and a day to exit the ceremony venue. It’s okay to skip the receiving line and opt to greet your guests throughout the reception. Just don’t tell super-traditional Grandma Susan beforehand! Shelby Taylor Photography If It Feels Like a Hassle, Skip It Plenty of wedding traditions are more trouble than they’re worth. If you and your partner don’t care about following a certain custom, skip it! This applies to several wedding traditions: Matching bridesmaid dresses. Trying to find a style and color to suit everyone can be difficult and expensive. More and more people are opting to mix and match within certain guidelines. The same style isn’t flattering on every body type. If bridesmaids chose their own dress, they’ll feel more comfortable throughout the ceremony and reception. Plus, it saves the bride the hassle and pressure of choosing a style. Just specify long or short and your preferred color palette, and let the maids take it from there. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Just saying it is a mouthful. While this can be a nice way to incorporate family heirlooms into a ceremony, don’t feel the need to check each of these things off your list. Planning a wedding is enough work as it is, so if this feels like just one more thing for you to do, let it go. Big champagne toasts. If your ideal wedding reception doesn’t include a long segment of gushy well-wishes from family and friends, don’t have one. If you do choose to have one, know it’s mostly for you and your partner. Your wedding guests probably won’t miss it or even notice you didn’t have toasts till the night is over. If anything, they’ll be grateful they had extra time to party! Flow Event Group Do What Feels Comfortable This is perhaps the most important consideration for those deciding which wedding traditions to ditch. If you’re not comfortable with a wedding custom, don’t do it. Whether it clashes with your personal philosophies or it just feels awkward to you, don’t force it. You should enjoy every part of your wedding day. Not seeing each other before the ceremony. This wedding tradition comes from the custom of arranged marriages. Grooms often saw their brides for the first time ever at the ceremony. This was so it would be too late to back out of the arrangement if they didn’t like the bride’s appearance! Yikes. Weird origin story aside, some couples still want to see each other for the first time with the sweeping proceedings of the ceremony. However, more and more couples are opting to have a first look photo session before the ceremony. (Pro-tip—most photographers agree you get better pictures this way!) Not only does this help you calm your pre-wedding jitters, but it also allows you to share an intimate moment without the pressure of all your guests staring at you! Garter and bouquet tosses. Maybe you hated being singled out as, well, single at your friends’ weddings in the past. You don’t have to put your guests through the same thing. Or, maybe as a shyer bride you don’t like the idea of your groom diving under your dress in front of all your distant relatives. That’s totally fine! The garter toss comes from a weird tradition of guests ripping off a piece of the bride’s dress as a souvenir of the wedding, so this is not a particularly meaningful custom to keep, anyway. Dollar dance. In some parts of the US, it’s common to have a dollar dance at the reception. Guests pay a buck for the chance to dance with the bride or groom, and then the couple gets to use the cash on their honeymoon. Some couples also find the idea of asking their guests for cash uncomfortable. Others just don’t like the idea of dancing with whatever acquaintance or relative comes up to you at the reception. Both of these are fine excuses to skip the dollar dance. Shoving wedding cake into each other’s faces. Don’t want frosting all over your face? Skip the cake-smashing custom. You are not required to feed each other for the sake of cute or corny pictures. You’re not even required to have cake at all, so go for pie or pastries if you prefer. Bride’s side, groom’s side. We’ve all been to weddings where one side of the ceremony was a little, well, empty. Maybe the groom’s side were all traveling from out of state, or maybe the bride just has a significantly larger family. Either way, it can feel a bit awkward or uncomfortable to look out at an imbalanced group of onlookers. That’s why many couples are choosing to ditch the division. It’s common to see signs letting you know you can “choose a seat, not a side.” This also makes it easier for guests who are good friends with both the bride and groom. They’ll be more comfortable knowing they don’t have to “choose” and can sit wherever, and with whomever, they like. Maison Meredith Photography Exclusionary Wedding Traditions Some wedding traditions just don’t work the same for “non-traditional” couples. Same sex couples, couples in their second marriage, older pairs, and other couples who in some way don’t fit the “typical” wedding mold may feel particularly uncomfortable with or excluded by some wedding traditions. Often there are ways to modify these traditions to be more inclusive, or they can even be ditched altogether. These are some wedding traditions you may want to reconsider even if you are a “traditional” couple. The bride walking down the aisle. What if you have two brides? Or none? This is a wedding tradition that same-sex couples often modify to work for their relationship. You can opt for a traditional processional, having one of you walk down the aisle to meet the other. However, there are several alternative ways to walk down the aisle. You can choose to walk down one at a time, to proceed together, or even to meet in the middle entering from two sides of the venue. Take some time to consider different options and choose one that feels right for you. Being “given away.” A bride may not like the idea of being “given away” by one or both of her parents if she’s getting married for the second time. Or, perhaps she feels uncomfortable with the old-fashioned gender roles reinforced by this wedding tradition. Either way, there are other ways to honor your parents during the ceremony that don’t involve being “given” to your partner. let your parents come onstage to sign the wedding certificate or have them light the candles you’ll use to light the unity candle. Wedding registries. Traditionally, a wedding registry is full of housewares the newlyweds can use to fill their new home. However, plenty of couples live together before they get married. Others simply get married when they’re well-established adults who have already furnished their own places. A middle-aged couple likely already have all the housewares they could possibly need. For any number of reasons, couples are opting for more creative wedding registries. It’s not uncommon to ask your friends and family to give to a honeymoon fund, to donate to your favorite charity, or to simply give money. Picking a wedding photographer can be one of the most difficult things to do while wedding planning! With so many different styles of photography to choose from, picking the best wedding photographer can be such a tricky task! When you have to include your budget into the mix of everything, picking a wedding photographer can seem impossible! Luckily, we have an abundance of Minnesota wedding photographers to choose from! Mistakes You Don't Want to Make With Your Minnesota Wedding Photographer Because there are so many different Minnesota wedding photographers to choose from, there are also tons of mistakes that you can make, too. Which sucks, but we're here to help! Since we've been in the business longer than I've been alive (I'm a millennial, y'all), we definitely know a thing or two about picking the best Minnesota wedding photographers! Read on to find out the worst mistakes you can make when picking your wedding photographer and how to avoid them at all costs! Mistake #1: Not reviewing your timeline with your photographer This is a big mistake that is easy to forget about. Do you know what time you need your photographer to be there? Have you both clarified where you're going to be meeting to take your first set of pictures? Does your wedding photographer know how much time you have set aside for pictures? What is plan B if the weather turns sour? What time is the best lighting for pictures? These are all important questions to ask yourself as well as your wedding photographer. It's important to be clear with your Minnesota wedding photographer from the get-go so you both can skip the drama! How to Avoid Mistake #1: As I said earlier, be clear from the get-go. I would recommend that you or your coordinator send over a detailed itinerary to your wedding photographer. Clearly explain the day's events and point out the exact time slots you'll have for photo sessions. Don't forget to collaborate with your wedding photographer, as they will know the best times to take pictures and will have good tips on making the day go smoother for the both of you. Mistake #2: Not having an engagement session with your photographer An engagement session is basically a trial run for the big day. An engagement session will give you a good feel for the wedding photographer's style and personality. Do you feel comfortable around the photographer? Can you and your fiancé be yourselves around them? Do they encourage you and seem to genuinely enjoy taking your pictures? It's pretty important that you enjoy being around your wedding photographer since you will be spending one of the most important days of your life with them! How to Avoid Mistake #2: Every Minnesota wedding photographer has their own distinct photography style that makes them unique. It's important to get comfortable with your wedding photographer before the big day, and an engagement session is the best way to do just that. Ask if your wedding photographer includes an engagement session in their total price before signing the dotted line! Otherwise, that engagement session may end up costing you an extra $200-$500. Mistake #3: Not hiring a second photographer Although this may sound excessive, we highly recommend that you consider hiring two photographers instead of one for your big day. Why? Because two photographers will be able to catch more candid moments than one! Two photographers will also be able to catch different angles and perspectives of the same moment that you wouldn't be able to have with only one wedding photographer. How to Avoid Mistake #3 I totally understand if you're concerned about the price of 2 photographers! I would be, too! Luckily, I know of a great Minnesota wedding photography company that offers 2 photographers for a VERY affordable price! Most Minnesota wedding photographers cost this much by themselves! Mistake #4: Not getting a wedding album This is a big mistake you absolutely don't want to make. Your wedding album will be something that you will cherish for the rest of your life, and besides, what else are you going to do with all of those wedding pictures?? Every moment was precious, so it's important to save all of those moments for you and your partner to reminisce in for years to come! How to Avoid Mistake #4 There's a pretty easily solution to this problem: buy a wedding album. Wedding albums can get pretty pricey sometimes, but like I said earlier, I promise that they're worth of it. Wish your wedding album came with the total price of your wedding photographer? You're in luck! Tulips & Ties offers a free wedding album in all of their wedding photo packages! Mistake #5: Not asking about what happens AFTER the wedding Have you ever thought about what happens after you get married? I'm sure you have! But have you thought about how quickly you want your wedding pictures after the big day? You may not be thinking about that now, but after the big day, I promise that you'll hardly be able to wait for your wedding pictures. How to Avoid Mistake #5 The best way to avoid this mistake is to ask your wedding photographer how long it takes after the wedding to get your pictures typically before signing the dotted line. And hold them to that! You ideally don't want to wait longer than 3 months after your wedding to get all of your pictures, so be sure to be clear with your wedding photographer about your expectations, and reconsider your decision if they are resistant to your expectations! Mistake #6: Waiting too long to book a photographer This is a very common mistake that a lot of couples make. If you find a photographer that has the style that you want, DON'T WAIT to book them! You want to snatch your dream photographer up as soon as you can so you don't have to go searching for a different Minnesota wedding photographer if the one you really wanted is not available. How to Avoid Mistake #6 The best way to ensure that you get your dream photographer is to start searching for your Minnesota wedding photographer about a year and a half before your event, and once you find your photographer, be sure to book them a year before your event. Although this may sound like a simple solution, it can be really difficult to pull off if you procrastinate, so we're begging you not to procrastinate! Mistake #7: Not signing a contract This sounds very simple, but it is very important. If your wedding photographer does not offer a contract to sign when you decide to book them, I would run! A contract is super important when you're paying for such expensive services! How to Avoid Mistake #7 Be upfront with your wedding photographer. Ask to see the contract, and DO NOT forget to thoroughly read through it all, including the fine print! Don't be afraid to ask questions as well! I've heard of too many brides getting into bad deals with other Minnesota wedding photographers because they did not read the fine print before they signed the dotted line, so don't make that same mistake! Mistake #8: Not researching enough BEFORE signing the contract This is also another big one. Sometimes couples will research a few wedding photographers, get quotes from each, and immediately book with one of them without looking at the other options out there. This is a very dangerous game to play as it is possible that you will later find another Minnesota wedding photographer that you like better! How to Avoid Mistake #8 The first step to finding the perfect Minnesota wedding photographer for you is to research what the various photography styles are out there! Do you like a more classic, unedited-looking style? Or do you like contrasting colors that are brought to your attention? Do you like abstract work? Do you want your pictures to look bright and fairy-like? These are all questions to ask yourself before looking at wedding photographers. After looking at the various styles, you next need to scour Google and social media for wedding photographers! There are so many Minnesota wedding photographers out there! Don't look at just a few. Check out at least 10 wedding photographers, and take the time to thoroughly look through their full wedding album portfolios before making a final decision. Mistake #9: Only looking at the highlights of a wedding photographer's portfolio I hinted at this in mistake #8, but this is also a big one when you're picking out your wedding photographer. Every Minnesota wedding photographer's going to have their favorite shots from every wedding, but don't choose your wedding photographer based on these highlights alone. How to Avoid Mistake #9 Request from each wedding photographer that you're considering at least two FULL wedding albums to check out so you can get a feel for their style from start to finish. Some wedding photographers ignore details that others do not. What shots are on your must-have list? Make sure that the wedding photographer you choose regularly includes these shots in their wedding albums, or those shots won't get taken. Mistake #10: Not asking about your rights to your pictures This ties into fully reading your contract before signing. Some photographers ask before using your pictures while others have it in their contracts that they can do whatever they want with your pictures. This means that you could end up on a blog like this one! Don't like the thought of that? Well... How to Avoid Mistake #10 Don't forget to ask about your rights with your wedding photographer before signing the contract. Be upfront with them about you are and are not comfortable with. If your wedding photographer isn't very responsive to your comfort levels, find another wedding photographer that is! Since it is basically the only thing that the majority of guests seem to care about, you must find the perfect food catering service if you want present a fantastic menu and finger-licking meals to satisfy their taste buds. If you succeed in doing so, your guests will walk out with a delightful taste in their mouth, and they’re probably going to remember your wedding for years to come! Finding an ideal wedding catering company can be quite an overwhelming task since there are tons of things you must know about this process but limited resources as to what to keep an eye out for. A huge chunk of your wedding budget will go into the catering, so you must make sure to find the perfect caterer for your special day. We've put together the best, detailed guide with all of the questions that a couple would possibly need to ask when looking for their ideal wedding catering service. 39 Questions to Ask Wedding Catering Companies Questions are a great place to start when hunting for the best catering company for your wedding. Make sure to ask as many questions as possible when interviewing different wedding catering companies. This is an important step that will help you gain valuable insights into the company’s performance, and their responses will also help you determine whether or not you’re going to have a great experience with them in the future. Start with the Basic Questions Though these questions might seem too basic, they really help you identify the best wedding caterer that will fit your needs. You must, however, ask these questions smartly to get as much information as you possibly can to prevent any last-minute disasters! Making the wrong choice in this aspect could end up ruining your entire day, thus you need to be clever in doing your research – so let’s start with the basics! 1. Do you have [insert your event date] available? This is the first and the most important question that you must ask your caterer, as this will allow you to ensure if they are available during your specified dates. Those that are not available can be immediately ticked off the list! 2. What determines the price per plate? This will allow you to determine their pricing strategy and how they calculate the per-plate costs. This is super important because you don't want to find out down the road that a catering company you've fallen in love with is outside of your price range, especially if you want a meal that includes what the catering company considers "extras." 3. What is your average per-plate cost? Although this questions may seem a little redundant, it's important to know what the catering company charges on average per-plate, even if you know your per-plate cost will be higher because you'll want those extra elements in there. This price gives you a base cost to every plate you'll be buying. The per-plate cost usually only goes up from there, so be sure the average cost is something within your price range to begin with. 4. How many guests can you serve? Finding out how many guests they can serve is a great way to know if they will be able to accommodate a large number of guests at one time. 5. What are your specialties? This will help you identify their special items and delicacies that could turn into the main highlight of your evening! 6. How much are your food tastings? Tasting the food is a surefire way to find out if the catering company can live up to its claims – however, before committing to anything, you must make sure whether you’ll be paying for it or not! 7. Do you have food packages, or do you only do a la carte? This will allow you to decide what items you can incorporate into your menu. If you prefer flexibility or versatility in your food options, you can go for an a la carte menu to surprise your guests! 8. What are your package upgrades? Whether it is the silver, gold, or platinum upgrade, this question will allow you to choose the perfect food package according to your budget, since most wedding catering companies offer a variety of packages for varying budgets. If you are looking to have an extravagant menu and are willing to go all out on your budget, don’t hesitate in inquiring about their top-rated packages. 9. How much does it cost for children's meals? Various catering companies offer reduced per-plate costs for under-age guests so make sure to ask your caterer regarding children’s meals. Your guests will probably be bringing their munchkins along with them (unless you ask them not to!), so make sure you have made the necessary food preparations! 10. What is you payment policy? You may have to make payments in advance, so make sure to ask your caterer regarding the payment policies to understand the payment schedule. 11. Is tip included in the price? The tip is often deducted at the end and adds to the overall payments; therefore it is better to discuss each and every thing beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings later on. 12. What is your refund/cancellation policy? This is essential to figure out beforehand in case the catering company does not deliver according to its claims. 13. How long does it take your staff to set-up and break down? This will allow you to estimate the total time required for the team to set up and pack up, so you can plan things in advance. It's also good to know this information so if the catering company does charge for overtime, you'll be a bit more prepared so you can avoid those fees! 14. What are your overtime fees? This is a crucial question that you must ask your catering company, in case things get delayed at the event. Waiters are usually paid double when staying overtime. 15. When do you need the final guest count? The caterer will need to know the final guest count close to the event so that they can manage everything beforehand and create an accurate number of servings. This also helps in avoiding wastage. Questions that You Probably Didn't Know You Need to Ask To make sure your wedding day ends on a happy note, you must delight your guests by satisfying their appetite with delectable and scrumptious food! Here is a list of some uncommon questions that you might think are unimportant, but these can help you distinguish the best catering companies from the average ones, allowing you to save yourself from potential disasters! 1. How many weddings do you cater per year? This will allow you to assess how experienced the company actually is. If they're experienced, they'll know what to do when disaster strikes! 2. How long have you been in business? The more the experience a catering company possesses, the better they will be able to deliver! 3. Can you cater to any venue? You must inform the caterer of your venue beforehand to make sure that they can cater to that particular place. Some venues only allow certain caterers, while other venues will charge you extra for choosing caterers that aren't on their list of favorite caterers. Make sure you speak with both your venue and your caterer about this to avoid extra expenses! 4. Do you have a license to serve alcohol? If you plan on serving alcohol, make sure that your catering company carries the license to serve alcohol, as most venues require a liquor license. 5. Will I need permits for the event? You may need various permits to avoid restrictions and successfully run your event, so make sure to discuss this with your caterer. If they don't know the answer to this question, run! 6. What are your recommendations based on my budget? Your caterer can provide you with valuable feedback and suggestions on how to improve your menu whilst staying on the budget. Give the catering company an idea of your wedding aesthetic and approximate guest count. Any good catering companies will be able to guide you in the best direction. 7. Can we create our own menu for the event? This will help you understand how flexible your caterer is, and whether they are open to new options or not. If you’re willing to be a little creative and experiment with different food ideas, here is a guide that you can check out! 8. Do you have options for dietary restrictions? If you are willing to arrange special food for a few of your family or friends due to allergies or lifestyle choices, discuss this with your caterer in advance to find out if they can accommodate and prepare these customized dishes. 9. What upgrades do you offer? Find out about the different packages your caterer offers to find the one that best suits your needs. 10. Do you offer a buffet-style package? Sit down? What is the price difference? Find out which of the two options are more budget friendly – a la carte or buffet style? While you’re at it, make sure to see the pictures of the food they’ve prepared for other events. 11. Do you have dessert options? To make your special day even more sweet and memorable, you must add some mouth-watering desserts to the menu. Make sure to ask your caterer if they offer dessert options. 12. Can you cut our wedding cake? Find out if your caterer provides some extra services such as this one. You may need to hire other vendors if they do not offer these services - here is a guide that can help you out with the other important vendors you may need to hire! 13. Do you make wedding cakes? Certain wedding caterers have extraordinary baking skills and specialize in making wedding cakes, so make sure to see if your caterer can do that. 14. What options of linens, glassware, plates, and flatware do you have? In case your wedding venue doesn’t offer these items, make sure that your caterer can provide these for you. 15. Do you have other supplies for rent? Make wedding planning a lot less hectic by renting most of your supplies such as tables, chairs, napkins, etc., from one place. 16. What does your crew clean up after the event? Certain venues have restrictions on how late the workers can stay, so you need to ask this question to plan things in advance. This information is also good to know so that if the catering company doesn't clean up completely after themselves before leaving, you can be sure to bring this to their attention. You don't want to pay for their mistakes! 17. What do you do with leftover food? Make sure your catering company does not throw or waste any leftover food. Here are some DIY ideas to make the most of your leftover wedding cake and food! 18. Do you provide bartenders? Book adequate bartenders to make sure your guests do not roam around with empty glasses! 19. Do you require that you provide the alcohol? If you intend on bringing your own liquor, make sure to ask your wedding catering company if they can accommodate that. 20. What brands of alcohol do you serve? Do your friends like a specific brand of alcohol? Ask the caterer if they can bring that particular brand to the venue. 21. What is your per-beverage charge? Make sure that the beverage costs do not go overboard! 22. Do you have coffee and tea services? A freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee will make the perfect starter! Ask your catering company if they can provide these services along with the food. 23. What does your serving staff wear? You may want to make sure that the staff is appropriately dressed for your event and in accordance with the theme. 24. Can I see pictures of events that you've done in the past? This will help you in evaluating the experience and caliber of the company you’re hiring. Apart from that, it will give you a clear idea of how your experience with them will turn out to be. If you plan on throwing an exotic wedding, make sure to pay extra attention to the food you’ll be serving. The right wedding catering service can turn your event into a major success – so make sure to do your own research and ask the above-mentioned questions before making your final choice! Now that the wedding is only weeks away you may find yourself asking, “what am I forgetting for my wedding?” No worries. We've got you covered. We’ve created the ultimate wedding planning timeline! Our last minute wedding checklist includes everything from paying your vendors to practicing your wedding kiss. The last few weeks before your wedding can be stressful, let us simplify your life with this comprehensive list of things you need to do before your wedding! Desert Rose Bridesmaid Dresses Last Minute Wedding Checklist: Things to Remember It's almost wedding time! Here are some last minute wedding checklist items to make sure you feel prepared for the big day. Put your excited energy into these tasks and eliminate that pre-wedding day stress. Week of Wedding Checklist 1. Confirm Your Arrangements with Vendors You have those contracts taken care of, but it doesn't hurt to double-check the details. Verify date, places, times, setup, take-down, etc. Most importantly: make sure your vendors' plans are in touch with the venue’s policies and facilities. 2. Finalize Your Vendor Payments The last thing you want to worry about on your big day is the bills that you have to pay. Take care of this ahead of time so you don't have to carry the checkbook around. Odds are it doesn't accessorize well with your dress anyway. 3. Create Tip Envelopes Label and fill envelopes with cash/checks in them for each of your vendors. Having tip envelopes organized beforehand will make it easy to pay out the DJ, catering staff, etc. without having to dig through your purse for cash. Passing out these envelopes is a great job for a personal attendant. Not sure how much to tip? Most vendors and their staff should be tipped about 15-20% as you would tip a normal server. Download our wedding planning guide for a detailed list of how much to tip each vendor! 4. Secure Your Marriage License Marriage license laws are different in every state. In some states you can walk in and get your license, in others you have to make an appointment. You may need to apply for your license a few weeks or months before your wedding. Start your research early so you can make sure everything is in place before your wedding! You may need several documents to make your marriage official. Consult our wedding planning guide for more information. 5. Finalize Your Bar Menu A cucumber-lemonade chiller, you say? Yum! Get that recipe written down (probably multiple times). Have note cards ready for your bartenders so you don't need to rack your brain for the concoction or go on a treasure hunt for the ingredients. Most importantly: make sure you get your drink menu approved by the venue and/or bar staff! They need to make sure they have all the ingredients in stock and the bartenders know how to make the drink. 6. Create a Wedding Music Playlist (Or Do Not Play List) You and your soon-to-be-spouse definitely have those songs you love and those songs you hate. Sit down together, pull up YouTube, and craft a "Do/Do Not Play" list for your DJ. Send this over early so that they can get a playlist queued up and ready to go for your night of dancing. You’ll also need to be specific about which songs to play for which parts of the party! Your first dance song, entrance song, dances with your parents, and last song of the night are all important to list for your DJ. Photographer: Dani Nicole 7. Create a Shot List & Schedule with Your Photographer It’s time to chat with your photographer now! By giving them a list of must-have pics, you can enjoy the night knowing they got shots of relatives, friends, and snapped plenty of reception candids. 8. Craft a Wedding Day Itinerary Having a schedule for you and your attendants will make you feel calm and in control. Your wedding day will run more smoothly if you know what you want to be done and by what time. Our wedding planning guide includes a sample schedule with everything starting from hair & makeup to cleanup at the end of the night. Wedding Planner Download Always pencil in a few extra minutes for safe measure. Don’t expect everyone to be exactly on schedule, you know your friends and family and which ones are on-time and which are chronically late. 9. Review Your Printed Materials Wouldn't it be awful if it came time to walk down the aisle and you saw that your name was spelled wrong on the program? I'd cry (dramatic, but probably true). Save yourself the fear and check your table numbers, place cards, menus, and programs as soon as you get them, just in case you need to rush-order a new batch. 10. Line Up Gifts For Loved Ones This might be something that slips off your radar, but it is such a thoughtful touch. Some couples hand out wedding survival kits to their bridal party, some bring coloring books for the kids, some bring a card for their parents. It doesn't have to be something huge, but the intention behind it goes a long way. Let your guests know you're thankful for them! For your bridesmaids, a fun gift idea is an outfit to wear while getting wedding-ready! Consider bridesmaid robes or pajamas for adorable photos - and a gift your girls can use over and over again. 11. Arrange Transportation Home For Your Bridal Party You want your guys and gals to enjoy themselves throughout the night. Give them the leisure of knowing that they can have a few drinks, relax, boogie down, and still get back to the hotel or their homes safe and sound. Check with your hotel to see if they offer shuttle services for weddings! 12. Plan Your Meals There is so much on your plate (pun intended) while preparing for your wedding that you may not remember that you need to eat! You need to eat breakfast and get at least one snack in before the ceremony. Depending on how many mouths you plan to feed, call ahead and order some grub for the gang. Depending on what you order, you may be able to complete this task the day before as well. 13. Have a Fashion Show Do a little outfit run-through with your entire wedding party. Make sure everything is the color and size it should be. This may be challenging if your party is spread out, but a quick phone call, picture, or FaceTime session will give you some peace of mind. Don’t forget to ask about accessories if you gave them free rein! 14. Try On Your Wedding Dress (Again) Your 'maids and men aren't the only ones who should do an outfit check. It doesn't hurt to slip on your gown (maybe with a little help from one of the girls) just to make sure things look right. Also, try on your accessories with the dress to verify that everything is as perfect as you pictured. Grooms need a pre-check as well! 15. Practice Your Bustle Make sure a bridesmaid knows how to bustle your dress, then practice! They can be really tricky, so I recommend bringing her along to the final fitting for a lesson. 16. Check Your Hair & Makeup Schedule Make sure your hair, makeup, nails, etc. are scheduled with plenty of time. Hopefully, these appointments have been made, but call and confirm times and dates a week out just to be sure. You might want to look at the times and dates on a calendar for a visual representation to make sure nothing is scheduled too close or too far from each other. 17. Make Time to Relax! Schedule some alone time or girl time—no wedding agenda allowed. Give yourself a day to read a book, lay at the beach, lie in your bed, grab happy hour with the girls, whatever relaxing activities you have in mind. This will be good for your sanity. 18. Schedule a Barbershop Visit Grooms: If you plan on getting your haircut, do not wait until 24-hours before. We all know that haircuts don't always turn out like the pictures in magazines. Get this done with a week or so to spare, so you don't look fresh out of the barber chair. 19. Practice Walking in Your Shoes We highly recommend a trial-run of your wedding shoes, especially if they are something you don’t usually walk around in. You may need to break them in or get used to the size and shape of the heel. You may even want to walk around in your dress with your shoes to make sure you know how to walk without tripping over your dress. 20. Write and Practice Your Vows Are you saying your own vows? Get some inspiration for your wedding vows, then start writing and practicing. Weddings are emotional events. With practice and preparation, you will have an easier time saying exactly what’s on your mind. The same goes for any speeches. It is customary that the couple says a quick thank you to the guests at some point in the reception. Have an idea of what you want to say ahead of time, so you don't accidentally choke on your words. It's also important to check in with your fiancé about these things. You don't have to read each other your vows ahead of time (although this may help with nerves), but make sure they carry a similar tone. Are you going for sweet and sentimental or light-hearted and a little humorous? Get a vibe and be on the same page. 21. Practice Your Kiss! Seems odd, doesn't it? But you're about to kiss in front of a lot of people, including parents, grandparents, and now in-laws. You may have kissed your future spouse thousands of times before, but most of them didn’t involve an audience. 22. Get Your Something Old, New, Borrowed, & Blue Following tradition? Don't forget to have your "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" ready for your big day. 23. Don’t Forget to Delegate Delegate tasks to your VIP's. This might be challenging for you if you are a DIY kind of girl, but it is in your best interest to pass some tasks along. Ask people to help ahead of time, and you'll save everyone involved from a headache. 24. Pack for Your Honeymoon Leaving for your honeymoon shortly after the reception? Pack now! Even if you have a day or two in between your flight and the ceremony, this tip will allow you to get a jump on thank-you cards, spend more time with family while they're in town, or even just rest your feet a bit after all that reception dancing. Day Before Wedding Checklist: Last Minute To Dos 25. Have a Plan for Storing Your Personal Items Don't tote your overnight bags around on matrimony morning. Drop your bags off the night before or ask a friend/family member to bring them the morning of. The same goes for any supplies you want at the reception. Drop them off early and save yourself the hassle. 26. Be Sure Your Pets Are Taken Care Of Do you have pets? Make sure they’ll be taken care of while you’re tying the knot! You may need to pay for a pet sitter or find a neighbor who doesn’t mind checking on your fur-babies while you’re enjoying your wedding. 27. Plan Your Gown Transportation How is your gown getting to the site? Who is going to bring it? Check with your venue to see if you can bring it a day early so you can get it out of the bag and breathing before the big day. 28. Share the Transportation’s Contact Info Get the limo/party bus driver's number and share it with the bridal party. Likewise, give your driver the maid of honor and best man's numbers (or possibly a list of the entire party). Supply printed directions as well. Taking these extra precautions should get you to the right places on time. Burgundy Bridesmaid Dress | Photographer: Dani Nicole 29. Designate Gift Caretakers Whether it be a bridesmaid, groomsman, personal attendant, or just another good friend, ask nicely to have someone pick up your presents. Lots of guests are sending gifts straight to the couple's home now, but for the few that do make their way to the reception, have someone ready to load them up for you at the end of the night. 30. Choose a Document Guard Find a responsible friend and put them in charge of legal documents. You'll be all over the place throughout the day, and things tend to have a way of going missing in the chaos. 31. Prep Your Wedding Emergency Kit By putting together a wedding day survival kit you're saving yourself from the scary "what if's" of wedding prep. A kit like this includes things like stain remover, snacks, and bandaids just in case anything goes wrong. Odds are you won't need everything in it, but extra preparation can't hurt. 32. Write Your Fiancé a Love Letter Are you and your fiancé writing each other sweet notes to read as you get ready? You totally should. It's precious. Opinion aside—this is not something you want to leave until the last minute. Sure, you don't need days to write a note, but give yourself a reasonable amount of time to write something from the heart that your soon-to-be Mr. or Mrs. can cherish forever. 33. Be Alone With Your Spouse Plan a moment for just the two of you amidst the chaos and excitement of the big day. You will be constantly surrounded—seriously, I mean it—even when you go to the bathroom. So setting aside time, even just a few minutes, to be with your husband away from family, friends, and photographers, may be good for you both. If you have a bridal suite at your wedding it might be the best place to get a moment of peace together. 34. Get Plenty of Sleep You will absolutely have adrenaline kicking in, but it is important to feel well-rested. Start winding down early the night before, so you can calm your body and mind enough to get some good sleep on your last unmarried night. It’s your time to walk down the aisle, profess your commitment, and live happily ever after. Choose music that celebrates this momentous occasion! Talk with your partner about the type of music you both would like for the ceremony. Consider both personal preferences and traditional ceremony melodies you may like to have. Taylor Hendrickson Photography Wedding Prelude Before the ceremony starts, there will be some open time as everyone gets situated. The bridal party will be bustling around and guests will be finding their seats. Play some background music before the ceremony begins while everyone is getting ready. This will help relax and create the ambience for your wedding ceremony. In a traditional setting, soft instrumentals are usually selected. In a more open setting, couples may want a playlist of non-instrumental love tunes. Some popular choices are beloved Disney ballads or 50’s love songs. You’ll only need a selection of a few songs to play for about 15-25 minutes during this down time. Nina Francine Photography Wedding Processional It’s time- the ceremony is going to begin! The background music will switch to play the wedding processional song. The couples’ parents, grandparents, and other special parties will proceed down the aisle. Following will be the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and flower girl and ring bearer. One song should allow enough time for the groups to reach their spots. The music could be a traditional instrumental, or a sweet melody. Some favorites of both are “Canon in D Major” by Johann Pachelbel and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole. Wedding Tip: Walk Down The Aisle To The Perfect Wedding Processional Song Nicole Marie Photography Bridal Processional Once the wedding party has found their places, there will be a brief pause. Awaiting the bride’s entrance, the music will switch and everyone will stand. A traditional bridal processional to use is Richard Wagner's "Wedding March- Here Comes The Bride". For something more modern, Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" is a lovely choice. Find a song that is meaningful to you and your partner. Remember that this song will mark the beginning of a new chapter. Sarah Olfelt Photography Unity Ceremony A unity ceremony is something special the bride and groom can include in their wedding. It’s a symbolic gesture of their union. Examples of unity ceremonies are lighting a candle, planting a tree, and pouring sand into a vessel. Talk with your partner about whether this is something you both would like to include. Explore the activities listed or find one that feels meaningful for your relationship. Prepare one or two songs to accompany this treasured event. Wedding Shoppe Inc. Kiana Grant Photography Wedding Music Playlists (Getting Ready, Cocktail Hour, Dinner) Along with the formal times during a wedding to play music, there are also some less formal. These are the “in-between” times before the ceremony and during the reception. The song playlists can be more carefree because it’s not a focus of your wedding. Shelby Taylor Photography Getting Ready There’s more to it than just getting ready for the day- it’s about hanging out with your friends! Enjoy this time and put together a playlist that both bridal parties can listen to. Have fun and be silly with picking out music- it’s just for you guys! You can also task a bridesmaid or a groomsman with this job. Tell them to add the newer hits and find your crew’s old-school favorites! If the day comes and making a playlist was forgotten, it’s okay- just go on Spotify and search for one already made. This music will surely elevate the mood and pump everyone up to get ready to celebrate! We can cheers to that! Ciara Grace Photography Cocktail Hour/ Dinner During cocktail hour and dinner, it's nice to play "background music" while everyone mingles and converses. If you have a DJ, you can ask for their suggestion of playlists they have ready for this section of the evening. Some weddings will play relaxed instrumentals and others may want jazzy 50’s tunes. Since this isn’t the “party time” music and everyone will be busy talking with each other, there’s no need to overthink it! Any music works just as long as it’s quiet enough so that your guests can comfortably chat!
