If you're coming up to your next Earth Science unit and struggling to find resources, we've got a treat for you! Teaching concepts like weathering and erosion in the classroom can be challenging as geological processes are topics that cannot be understood simply by reading. Erosion and weathering are perfect topics for engaging your students in hands-on learning. To help you start your planning, we've gathered 20 of the best weathering and erosion activities you can try in your classroom!
In this post, you will learn the difference between weathering and erosion. You will also can print out your free printable set to practice.

*NOW INCLUDES A DIGITAL COPY!* The Skittles weathering and erosion lab is a great lab to let students visually see what weathering and erosion looks like. The student needs one Skittle. They drop water on it using a pipette. Students make observations in their booklet (they draw what they see and write what they see). This product is meant to be printed and given to students during the lab. In this booklet, students can make an inference, draw/ write their observations and then answer conclusion questions. What the objects in the lab represent: - Skittle = a rock - Water = water in nature (rain) - Colored water coming off of the Skittle = erosion - Paper plate = earth's surface Students will love this lab because it is hands on, it allows them to color and it lets them visualize weathering and erosion! If you would like to see the pages included in this product, head to my Instagram (misslowersflowers) and watch my "TPT store" highlight. *RECENT UPDATE: I have updated this resource with a different font. I now have two versions in this resource (the font from the first upload and a new font that will make it easier for younger kids to read).

Students use this worksheet to distinguish between weathering, erosion, and deposition. The activity exposes students to a variety of phrases that describe each of the processes. It is great for whole group instruction as well as intervention and students who are acquiring the English language.
Using visual aids like computer-drawn pictures to teach about weathering and erosion can be a great way to engage students, especially those who are visual learners or struggling with the concept. Here's a suggested activity using these pictures: Materials Needed: The set of 20 computer-drawn pictures depicting before and after stages of weathering and erosion. A blank template for students to record their answers (optional). An ANSWER KEY for reference (optional). Scissors (if you choose to cut out the pictures for a matching game). Instructions: Introduction (Discussion): Begin the lesson with a brief discussion about weathering and erosion. Explain the key concepts and terms, providing real-life examples to make it relatable to your students. Picture Exploration: Show the students the set of 20 before-and-after pictures. Discuss what they observe in each pair of pictures and encourage them to make predictions about what might have caused the changes. Matching Game: You have two options for this activity: a. Matching Game without Cutting: Give each student a blank template with spaces for them to match the before and after pictures. You can distribute the pictures and templates face down. Instruct the students to flip over a picture and its corresponding blank template. Their task is to match the before and after pictures and record their answers on the template. b. Matching Game with Cutting: Cut out each of the 20 before and after pictures separately. Shuffle them and place them face down on a table. Each student takes turns picking two cards from the table, attempting to match a before picture with its corresponding after picture. If they make a match, they keep the pair; if not, they return the cards to the table. Continue until all the pairs have been matched. Discussion and Review: After the matching game, gather the students and discuss their findings. Use the ANSWER KEY (optional) to verify their matches and explain the causes and processes involved in each picture. Extension Activity (Optional): Encourage students to create their own before-and-after drawings that depict weathering and erosion in different environments. This will help reinforce their understanding of the concepts. By using these before-and-after pictures and engaging activities, you provide your students with a more hands-on and memorable learning experience about weathering and erosion.
