We've all been there. If not from drinking one too many, then perhaps because of overeating during the family holiday gathering, or getting food poisoning because someone can't cook to save their life.

These were 2 of the three cool downspouts on the back of St. Conan's Church on Loch Awe in Scotland, and 2 of the reasons I wanted to see the church while in Scotland in June. I found out about St. Conan's Church on the web. It is actually one of the newer churches with lots of cool things about it, including rabbit-head downspouts, a replica of Robert the Bruce and beautiful architecture in general! It's right at the top of Loch Awe. "The coming of the Callander and Oban Railway in the late 1870s opened up what had previously been the largely deserted north shore of Loch Awe. The island of Innis Chonain, close to the shore, was brought by Walter Campbell, who then built a house there for himself, his sister and his mother. "The nearest church was at Dalmally, a long journey for the elderly Mrs Campbell. Walter Campbell therefore decided to build a church in a more convenient location, and picked a site on the steep north shore of Loch Awe. St Conan's Kirk was born. "The original St Conan's Kirk was built between 1881 and 1886, and comprised the nave and part of the choir of the later church that visitors see today. Walter Campbell had grander plans, however, and in 1907 he began work on a much more ambitious church. "The new St Conan's Kirk was first used for worship in 1930. It is magnificent, beautiful, remarkable, and just a little bizarre. Walter Campbell did not design the church to conform to any particular style....... "Further west is the Bruce Chapel. This is notable for a larger than life sized effigy of Robert the Bruce, carved from wood with an alabaster face and hands. With light coming through the windows behind, the face and hands gain a translucence that gives the effigy a very life-like appearance. Below the effigy is a small chamber containing a bone of Robert the Bruce, brought here from Dunfermline Abbey." Here's a website with a diagram of the layout, plus more details about the separate parts of the church. And yet another source of information about the church. "The original church, which was begun in 1881 and finished about 1886, was a comparatively small and simple building, although adequate to the needs of the small congregation. It occupied what is now the nave, and a part of the choir of the present kirk. But Walter Campbell was not satisfied with this. He began to dream of a far nobler building. He started work on this in 1907, and devoted the rest of his life to its execution. He died in 1914, and work had to be suspended during the First World War; but as soon as it was possible, his sister Helen carried out the plans which he had left. She in her turn died in 1927, and the project was finally completed by their Trustees. Work was necessarily slow, for not only was no labour brought in from outside, but the stone of which the kirk was built was not quarried, but consisted of boulders lying on the slopes of the hill above, which were rolled down, split and shaped on the spot. Walter Campbell was his own architect. He did not allow himself to be trammelled by convention or orthodoxy........He was more anxious to achieve beauty than consistency."

This bookish figure, one of many intricately carved grotesques, makes his home on the lovely Gothic City College campus on 137th Street. I wonder what he’s reading.
In thoughts from visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake. Then a spirit glided before my face – The hair of …

Pets become real family members for us. Of course, cats and dogs are most often brought up, but some already want exotic ones.
