Last week we hit the ground running with back to school read alouds. I am a huge believer in making time to read aloud books to our students. It is such a special moment for them. Seeing the excitement and expressions on their face is one of my very favorite times of our day. Just think...the read aloud that you provide to your students might just be the only book they have read to them all day. We started off listening to You're Finally Here by Melanie Watt on You Tube. Afterwards my students and I created an anchor chart with what took them so long to get here! Next, we completed this directed drawing by Amy Lemons. These turned out way too cute! It was a great way to discuss my expectations for listening and following directions. We also read, Chrysanthemum and talked about how our names are each unique in their own way. We talked about the character traits of Chrysanthemum and wrapped things up with this activity from Michelle Oakes. Afterwards, students took this form home to complete with their families and bring back to school to celebrate their names. You can download this freebie here. Next, we read my all time favorite, The Recess Queen, and sorted these cards on what makes a recess friend and what does not. We listed traits of Mean Jean, and wrote about why we are not a bully! You can find more Recess Queen activities here and a Facebook Live video here with ideas on how to use this book in your classroom. We talked about being bucket fillers by reading the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?. Afterwards, we listed ways to be a bucket filler and completed this writing activity by Amy Lemons. And to wrap up the week we read, If You Take a Mouse to School... and predicted what might happen if we brought a mouse to school. Their responses always make me laugh! Priceless! You can download this reading response craftivity here. Writing piece is HERE.

I always like to start the year with a review of lines. Every grade level does a project that reintroduces all the different ways to make lines. By 4th and 5th grade, we are ready to turn those lines into something really amazing! These projects are partially inspired by the many "zentangle" lessons out there, but I don't actually teach the zentangle method. I have the students start with a line pattern and then fill it with doodles. We focused on contrast-making some areas dark, and some light. I love when I look around the room and tongues are hanging out. That's how you KNOW the kids are concentrating! We started this project by taking a digital picture of each student, then cutting off the hair and attaching it to a piece of cardboard. These long pieces of poster board were donated to my classroom last year, so we put them to good use! The kids used eraser and pencil to plan the shape of their hair, then used thick and thin sharpies to divide into sections and create the patterns. We used colored markers to create the background and help the line designs stand out. 4th/5th Grade Bad Hair Days You guys, my students are amazing. They seriously impress me and surprise me every day. We began this project in art class, and I sent them to their classroom with the expectation that they would finish their black and white patterns on their own in their classroom. Not only did they finish them, but they came back BRILLIANT! We finished the marker background today in the art room.

Hello my lovely friends :) Today was my first day back with my littles! WAHOO! I was so excited to get back to school and see my rockstars. Of course they were ridiculously bananas all day long, but that was pretty much what I expected! I'm just happy to be getting back into the swing of things. Here is a picture of my outfit on my first day of school (hehe)! It felt awesome to be wearing normal clothes again instead of yoga pants all the time! You know what the best part of my outfit is? That leg accesory. O.M.G. it goes with everything! Not. It's hideous. But a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do! I bought the adorable chevron skirt from Target for only $20! Yay! I can't tell you how big of a deal it is that I am wearing flats. I seriously NEVER wear flats. I only have about 20 pairs of flat shoes so I have no idea what I am going to do for all this time on crutches. My 75+ pairs of heels are calling my name. I'm a high heel fanatic. Sigh. I stared longingly at my beautiful black pumps this morning and almost shed a tear. I swear they were glaring at me as I slipped my feet into these flat babies. Woof. So when the kids showed up today they were literally jumping off the walls (I mean it when I say literally - one did a wall slide over to me, while another drop kicked his bookbag). I love their faces though :) All smiley and sweet! One of my girlies who is basically attached at my hip cried in my face. She was squeeling and saying, "My dreams came true! My dreams really did come true! How could this be? You're really here! I hope I'm not asleep". I was just hugging that little thing, cause she was so darn cute. After they all settled in, we were right back into our old groove. It's amazing how quickly you snap into teacher mode, isn't it? And it's amazing how quickly they slip into "Let's make completely absurd choices, just for fun" mode, isn't it? Gotta love those kinders. One of my favorite parts was when two of my kids cut their own hair and ate it during centers. I looked over to see them shoving pieces of hair into their mouths as fast as possible. I called them over immediately and made them spit it out, however, while the first was spitting her hair out, the second was swallowing as fast as she could before she got to the trash can. Not sure what was going on there. It's not like they were hungry, we just got finished with snacks. ANYWAY, long story short, it was a wonderful, long, exciting kindergarten day and I'm thrilled to be back :) Here are a few snapshots I took with the kids today. One of my sweeties saw my phone on my desk and asked if we could take a "funny picture" together, so I said yes and we took one. I look up .3 seconds later and there are 5 more kids who wanted one now. So we had a little impromptu photography session, but it was fun to just be silly with them for a few! Today we started our lessons on community helpers! I had about 4,000 things planned, but in true teacher fashion, I only got to about half of them. It literally took me my entire lunch period to walk all the way to my chart paper and make an anchor chart for the afternoon. And it turned out ugly on top of it all. I printed out the cutest labels that I included in my new "Community Helpers Mini-Unit", but of course I ran out of ink so the colors came out ridiculous. I had to go old skool and just use markers. Ooooh, how old fashioned! HA! The kids completed a student version of the "are can help" chart as we filled out the big one together. We did a few other activities, including starting our community helper mini-books and we read a book, but I didn't take nearly as many pictures as usual. It's tough to make it around the room and snap them! I'll be sure to do better tomorrow :) I will share more of our community helper fun as the week goes on. You can check out my mini unit by clicking the picture below! And now for a freebie! I created a Rhyme Time activity for Dr. Seuss Day. I plan on using it for centers on Friday. Feel free to grab yourself a copy by clicking the picture below! Don't forget about the FABBY FAB "The Naughty Leprechaun" giveaway I am having! This book is awesome people and is worth over $30! Ono, commonly known as wahoo, is a close relative of the king mackerel. Unlike true mackerel, ono rarely school, but groups may be found around fish aggregation buoys. Surface catches indicate that ono associate with banks, pinnacles and flotsam. However, longline catches suggest that this species is also widely distributed in the open ocean. Ono may grow to more than 100 pounds in round weight, but the usual size of the fish caught in Hawaii is 8 to 30 pounds in round weight. Ono flesh is whiter, flakier, and has a more delicate texture than the meat of other fast-swimming, pelagic species. Although ono may make oceanic migrations as far as those of tuna and marlin, it contains less of the strong-tasting "blood meat" muscle that the latter species use for long-distance swimming. This recipe can be done inside or on your grill. If grilled, expect the cooking time to be 4 to 5 minutes per side. Ono provides a great canvass for all kinds of side dishes from fried rice to Asian vegetable sautee. Ingredients: Hawaiian Wahoo (Ono) 4/6oz or 8/9oz Fillets 2 Tbsp Smoked Paprika Rub Olive Oil Sea Salt Black Pepper Lemon wedges for garnish Instructions:Spray pan with nonstick spray or brush with olive oil to prevent sticking. Preheat on med-high for about five minutes. Pre-Heat Oven to 350 F Sprinkle the Salt, Pepper & Smoked Paprika Rub on the meat side of the Ono. Place fillets on grill skin side down and cook, turning once or twice 3-4 Minutes per side. Move Pan to Oven for 4 to 5 Minutes to finish. Fish is done when the Ono flakes easily. Squeeze on fresh lemon and serve hot. Plating: Place each Ono Fillet on a Plate with your Side Dish. I get A LOT of questions about transferring artwork to a mural-sized surface. This is (understandably) one of the most intimidating parts of beginning mural work for a lot of artists. Lucky for you, there’s a ton of options out there, and many of them are super-accessible to beginner muralists. Wha
