This 130 page author study focuses on all of Laura Numeroff's "If You Give..." books. These circular texts are favorites of my students. The activities in this packet can be completed in as little as one week or as long as a month. It is up to you for pacing. The activities in this packet are of varying ability levels. Pick and choose what works for you and your students. I like to do this packet towards the beginning of the year in first grade. Activities Included: Laura Numeroff Chart: This anchor chart can be used to compare the different "If You Give Books." Writing Prompts: These eight writing prompts can be hung up in the hall or compiled into class-made books. They can be done as extension activities after reading the book or as independent literacy center activities. Venn Diagrams: These five Venn Diagrams come with picture cards to glue onto the Venn Diagrams. T-Chart: This t-chart compares reality vs. fantasy for the story If You Give a Moose a Muffin. Art Projects: Two art center projects utilize following directions to create the cat from If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and the mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Math Project: Two difficulty levels of this Cat's cupcake math project are included in this packet. Story Unscramble: This activity goes with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. It is a bit challenging for first graders. I recommend doing it whole class or only a sentence of it. Second grade and up could do it independently if you provide them with copies of the book. Listening Center: This packet includes eight listening response logs. File Folder Word Walls: There are five file folder word walls with pictures included in this packet. They work nicely with the writing prompts. Writer's Workshop Lesson: The lesson included follows the Common Core Standards. It should be done as a cumulating activity for the author study. Phonics Activities: There are three simple phonics activities included in this packet. Two word family activities and one initial sound sort. Alliteration Chart: This chart is meant to help your students recognize alliteration and use it in their own writing If You Give Mini Book: This book provides an outline for your students to write their own "If You Give" books. Literacy Centers: I have updated the packet to include literacy centers. Included - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Themed Tiny Words Search, Search/Read/Write the Room for -at and -ap words, Sort the -at and -ap words, Sort the -ig and -og words, Stamp the words, Build a Sentence, Spin a -at and -ap word. This book by Laura Numeroff and Illustrated by Felicia Bond is so cute! My kids loved it! I thought it would be fun to create a Mouse Paper Bag Puppet to go with the story. I'll read the story using my puppet. Then the students can trace and cut the overalls, paws, ears, cookie and milk... Because "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" he's going to want a glass of milk to go with it! Here is the pattern you can print out: I used colored card stock and a glue stick for the paper and tacky glue for the googly eyes, yarn whiskers, pom pom nose and overall buttons. The base of the milk can be cut on a fold - that way you can just glue the edges and put the straw inside. I'll make my own with them so they can see how it all goes together and where to draw the eyebrows, stitching, mouth, etc... There is a piece of pink under the flap of the bag for the inside of the mouth and the cookie or straw will fit inside if they want to pretend he's drinking his milk - or eating his cookie. Lots of imaginative play can ensue once this little guy is complete!

IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO SCHOOL - Story Extension Activities for Grades K-1 If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff is one of our favorite picture books to read on the first day of school. It's been a go-to story during the back to school season for as far back as I can remember, and justifiably so... the children love it! This year, we created some related resources to extend the story in ways that are both fun and tied to ELA standards in the early grades (K-1). Our favorite part of the resource is the student book (Mouse Goes to School) and the directed drawing activity where kids learn step-by-step how to draw a mouse, but there are several other pages that help support reading comprehension. ⭐️ Check out the preview to see more. THE SET INCLUDES: Reading comprehension worksheets covering skills for comparing & contrasting, making personal connections, examining character traits, and understanding story sequence. An open-ended written response template that provides a space for students to draw and write about their favorite part of the story. One student book that differentiates the text from the picture book. This printable text provides children with an opportunity for repeated readings and engaging sight word work as they trace high frequency words in their own book. A directed drawing activity showing children step-by-step how to draw a mouse. The illustration and writing prompts encourage individual creativity and provide a space for students to write a complete sentence. Colorful game cards for playing Memory, but with a comprehension twist. When a student makes a match, he or she shares a key detail from the story that is prompted by the picture on the cards.
