I love to teach my kids the stories from the Bible in fun and hands on ways, especially during Holy Week! Holy Week leads up to the most important day for Christians, which is Easter!
Tomorrow- June 2, 2011 - marks 40 days from Easter Sunday. In the book of Acts Chapter 1 (Acts 1:1-11) one can read the story of how, 40 days after Jesus' resurrection, he was taken up into Heaven. Forty days after Easter is known as Ascension. One fun way to teach children this story is with a fun craft. All you need are scissors, glue, some white and blue construction paper, about a foot and a half of ribbon or yarn, a paper cup, and a printout of Jesus (if your child is artistic, they may enjoy drawing Jesus). First cut into the bottom of a cup a small slit for the ribbon, flip the cup upside down, then glue blue paper on the outside of the cup (it would be much easier to buy blue cups if you plan to do this for more than a couple children), then cut out cloud shapes from white construction paper, and glue them around the cup to represent the sky with clouds- (Acts 1:9 says- After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid them from their sight.) Then print out a picture of Jesus that will fit inside the cup- I used a fairly large cup, I printed out a picture of Jesus from DLTK Bible website's Jesus mini book- here is the link you can copy and paste: http://www.dltk-teach.com/minibooks/jesus/index.htm I used the picture on page 7, I printed it in color then reduced it to 70 percent, you may have to reduce it further to fit your cup. Or you could color your own picture of Jesus. Cut out the picture, then put the picture on top of the blue construction paper and cut around the picture shape so you have a backing paper for Jesus' picture. Also cut out a cloud for the top piece, like shown in the picture, and a slightly larger copy of the cloud in blue construction paper. Using a glue stick, spread glue on the blue paper that fits Jesus' picture, then lay the bottom end of the ribbon or yarn on the blue paper, and then glue the picture of Jesus on top of the blue paper, sandwiching the ribbon in between the two papers. This picture Shows how the ribon is sandwiched in between the picture and the blue paper. Thread the ribbon through the hole in the bottom of the cup, so that by pulling the ribbon, you can pull Jesus up into the cup. This picture shows Jesus part way up into the cup- he is able to be pulled all the way in. At the top of the ribbon sandwich the ribbon between the white and blue cloud shapes, so that the ribbon will not fall back through, and so you have something to hold to pull Jesus up into the cup. Write on the cloud- He Lives! See top picture) I have to give credit to craft book writers, it is not easy writing craft instructions, I think with the pictures, and my attempt at instructions, you can get the basic idea of this craft. Along with this craft- read the story in Acts 1:1-11. I often find interesting discussion questions at this website, along with other great activities for a variety of Sunday school lessons, here is a link to a lesson about ascension at Sundayschoolsources.com Lesson: Jesus Ascends If you need an additional lesson activity, I love the mini books from the Take Home Bible Reproducible book, which I often use along with my lessons, definitely a useful book to have on hand if you regularly teach Sunday School, or to supplement your home school Bible classes. You can find more information about that book below at my Amazon Affiliate link. The story of Jesus being taken up to heaven is an interesting one to share with children, hope everyone takes a few minutes to read this story in Acts tomorrow, and has fun making this craft. Have a great week!
Crafts Here are a few craft we used when teaching a lesson on "Jesus Calms the Storm" during VBS. These could be used with several other lessons like Noah, Jesus walks on Water, Paul's Shipwreck, etc! Ocean Bags Snack size ziplocks work great for this craft. Place a small amount of blue toothpaste in the bag, seal it, and let the child spread the toothpaste out by rubbing over the bag. You can use stickers to stick on the outside or even place something small on the inside. Wave Streamers Use blue and white or dark blue and light blue streamers to make this craft. Cut pieces of streamers and either tape or glue them to the end of a jumbo popsicle stick. The kids like to help make a storm by waving the streamers (waves) in the air and then stopping when you get to the part of the lesson where Jesus calms the storm. Ocean in a Bottle This is a fun take home idea. I made a big one with a large bottle to use during my lesson with the 2 year olds. I found small water bottles for the kids to have. For older kids you might could let them help make the oceans but for our younger kids we made them ahead of time and sent them home after the lesson so they could have their own ocean at home to review the lesson with. They are a lot of fun. It is important to make sure you glue the lid on so it WON'T come off. I used hot glue on mine. When rocked (not shaken) from side to side it makes neat waves! This "ocean in a bottle" craft was made using the following recipe...very simple! This recipe works very well!! Fill bottle about 1/2 full of water, add blue (just a few drops) of food coloring, shake to turn water blue, fill the rest of the way with cooking oil. Seal and glue lid! You may also want to add shells, fish, glitter, etc before sealing! For a different ocean in a bottle recipe click here
Gather a scrap piece of construction paper, 7 popsicle sticks, crayons, a glue stick, and scissors. Color 6 of the craft sticks. These will be used to create the jail. Lay one stick down horizontally and add some glue to each end. Then lay a stick vertically on each end, as shown in the picture. Lay another stick down horizontally, color side up, and add some glue to each end. Then slip that stick up under the two vertical pieces and stick together. You now have a complete square. Add some glue to the back ends of the last two colored popsicle sticks and lay them down as jail bars. Draw a Joseph figure on the piece of construction paper and cut him out. Glue the Joseph figure to the last popsicle stick. Put Joseph in and out of Jail. Joseph had to go to jail and that was really hard, but he still trusted that God had a plan for him!

Lanterns and lamps appear in many Bible stories and they're so easy to make, but I've always been disappointed that it's difficult to put a light in a lantern without risking the whole thing going up in flames! It seems such a shame to make a craft about light and then not to give the children a light to put in it! Here 's a solution I've come up with. Depending on the age of the children, you might want to assemble some parts beforehand. You will need: a clear plastic cup, a battery operated tealight, an A5 sheet of coloured paper, 2 small strips of the same colour paper, a pipe cleaner (preferably the same colour as the paper, Stickers or other decorations, a stapler and some scissors. Fold the paper in half lengthways. Cut a series of slits through the fold, but make sure you leave a space between the end of the slit and the edge of the paper, Cut off the top part of the plastic cup and discard it. Put small holes in the sides of the remaining plastic cup and secure a pipe cleaner to it as a handle Open up the paper and glue the two edges together so that the lantern looks like the one above, with the original fold line running across the middle. Lower the plastic cup and tealight through the top of the lantern. Secure the handle by stapling the small strips over the top of the pipe cleaner at either side of the lantern. The pipe cleaner should be able to move freely through the strips so you can adjust the height of the light. You will be able to pull up the lantern so you can reach the tea light to switch it on and off. Simply pull the lantern back over the top when you have finished. Now decorate your lantern! The lantern will hang easily and the light will shine! This is a great craft to use for teaching about Jesus being the light of the world and him wanting us to be like light to others. Because the light is safe, children can use it at home to remind them that Jesus is with them and as a reminder that they can bring light to others.
