Vintage separator made by DeLaval. Separators were use on farms to separate cream from milk for use in making butter. DeLaval was a major manufacturer of these separators and there are many vintage versions, some powered by hand and others electric. This DeLaval separator was made after 1923 (based on the brass plate with a list of the patent dates). This separator is not functional and I don't think it can be restored, as it is missing parts and the large gear is rusted into place. However, it has a great look to it and would be perfect as a lawn or garden ornament. The silver bowl on top makes a ideal planter and there are other flat and bowl-shaped parts to it that could also accommodate plants or other ornaments (bird feeders, etc.). Very versatile! It has been repainted and the brass plates have been polished. The separator is 49 inches tall to the top of the bowl. The base is 19 1/2 by 15 1/4 inches and each foot has a hole - you could bolt it down to a surface but it is heavy enough that it should stay in place (unless you live in a hurricane zone or Kansas). The gear on the side 15 inches in diameter. The bowl is 16 inches across and 8 inches deep. There is a smaller bowl where the brass DeLaval plate is attached that is 6 1/2 inches across and 4 1/2 inches deep. The circular plate towards the bottom is 11 1/4 inches across. Note: this plate is not a seat, it will not support a person. It was originally meant to support a bucket for the cream, so it can hold some weight, just not too much. The separator was rusty when I got it and some of the rough, rusty surface is visible under the new paint. There are some rust holes in the large silver bowl at the top. The silver bowl is also missing two of its feet on the bottom and there is a square piece of steel in its place on one side. The silver bowl could always be used separately as a planter, the surface below the bowl could be a place to put something. As mentioned above, the large gear is frozen in place, and the handle does not turn. The handle originally had a wooden grip but this is no longer present. The separator is close to 100 pounds and due to weight and size, it can't be shipped USPS, so this would be local pickup only. I am located very close to an exit off highway 94 in Minneapolis and there is easy access and loading from the alley by my garage. I can help load but it should be moved by at least 2 people, it is heavy and awkward. I was able to fit most of it in my car (2014 Honda Accord) but I was not able to close the trunk - if you have an SUV, hatchback or pickup, it should fit just fine. Let me know if you have questions - thanks!
This badge came off the front of a long ago scraped DeLaval Separator Co Machine. It is not in great condition with minor dings and a lot of pitting (please see photos) but is still displays well. One end has a small break too. The badge measures just over 6 inches across and just under 2 inches tall. SHIPPING INFORMATION: We usually ship in 2-3 days of getting a cleared payment. The back of the sign reads "W.D Hamilton, Fisher MN". From what I have researched, W.D Hamilton and his brothers Frank and Donald owned a hardware store in Fisher Minnesota in the 1800's as well as an Opera House in Fisher. Headlines in the Crookston Daily Times for August 31, 1895 stated that the Hamilton Brothers Hardware Store was robbed. This sign may have hung in that store. I received information from a long time employee of the DeLaval factory that it looks like it could also have been used as an identifier on a stand at a show or exhibition. He also stated that it could have been illuminated by a spot light so it may have been on the outside of a building. In any case, it is an amazing piece of history for anyone collecting DeLaval memorabilia. Please review the pictures for the condition of the sign and I will be happy to send more pictures if needed. The sign measures 11'10'' long by 16.5" wide and 1.75" deep. less
