I have always had a fascination for antique postcards ~ any holiday...but the Christmas ones are quite strange indeed. From their morbidity, to the just plain strange! here are a few that have made me say... "....Hmmmm...." I mean, creepy walking root-vegetable men? or how about a kidnapping santa? this one cracks me up - just look at their little legs! a little too much eggnog perhaps? and doesn't a cat-fight outside a tenement window just scream Happy Christmastide? or would you prefer a gang of torch-carrying birds to lighten your way? I especially adore the Krampus character, being that I love Halloween so very much ~ he scared the H E double-hockey-sticks outta me as a child though! this one stumps me: ever heard of the Yule Goat? or perhaps sled-riding, well dressed chickens? but I do prefer the plain old, creepy guy that we have all come to love the best though Blessings from the Farm ~ Lori
Um, our ancestors were weird, y'all. Maybe we're just missing some context that would make these bizarre Victorian Christmas cards make sense?
Fuck it: troubling Victorian Christmas cards.
At Christmas, what better use of the internet is there than to share some hilariously creepy Christmas card art? Terrify your children with these classics.
Victorian Christmas cards don't look anything like the commercialized and happy greeting cards we're all used to today. They're cards were creepy and grim.

If you think holidays are weird these days, then you clearly haven't seen these 19th-century Victorian Era Christmas cards that were just as creepy as those times themselves. Bored Panda has gone through an expansive TuckDB Ephemera's vintage Holiday greetings postcard collection to gather some of the most bizarre postcards ever made. From frogs stabbing each other to Krampus (a half-goat, half-daemon) entertaining the ladies in the best Victorian Era fashion manner... Yeah, there isn't a more random way to say 'Merry Christmas' to someone these days, but when you think of it, these seasons greetings actually work as a time machine and reveal the relevant topics of those days.
Anthropomorphic cats, murderous frogs, and insects dancing by the moonlight aren't exactly part of our Christmas card tradition today.
The most wonderful time of year? Tell that to the illustrators of the 19th century, who seemed to love nothing more than drawing scenes of violent frogs and creepy onion people
Who needs Jolly Old Saint Nick when you have evil Krampus kidnapping your children and frogs committing murder! It's all part of a Victorian Christmas. More
One of the more curious recurring images on 19th-century Christmas cards is the dead bird, which may symbolize mortality, or something more ritualistic.
Today, you will be visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. You know what, scratch that. We’re experiencing the present, and the future is too unpredictable. Let’s just focus on the past!

In the 1800s, long before swiping right, there were escort cards: paper cards that men presented to women as an indication of their interest.
Sending and receiving Christmas cards is one of my most favorite holiday traditions! But what do you do with all those cards after Christmas? So many people send photo cards these days that it just seems like such a shame to put them all in the recycling bin or to store them in some box... View Article
After the first Christmas card was sent in 1843, Victorians eagerly embraced the new tradition. Here are just a few of the wonderfully weird cards we tracked down.
Sending Christmas cards was a habit popularised by the Victorians. With one day left to post this year’s cards, here is a look back at some 19th-century designs from Manchester Metropolitan University’s archive

Since I was a child, I've long believed at the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve ~ the Animals gather from farm & field to offer their voices ~ to us which they yield: "a Happy Christmas to one and all" ... then head wearily back to their stall or branch, nest or burrow deep into the night and whisper a sleepy "...to all aGood Night!" ©L.Brechlin 2016 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰 Well, that's they way I see it anyway... what better time for our beloved fur, feathered & finned friends ~ to become magically outspoken but on Christmas Eve? I remember fighting sleep each year waiting for a chance to hear tiny voices from our kittens ~ that I imagined would sound something like a baby talking in a high-pitch. {but, then again at that age I believed I could hear the stars twinkling at night too} ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ My love for animals has no bounds, and I will gladly sacrifice any morsel of food I have to one who is hungry ~ or happily kneel in dirt to gently pat one who may be scared or hurt. oh we could learn so much from them... if we'd only listen. here are a few {ok, ALOT} of my favorite antique Christmas postcards depicting animals ~ found these all on Pinterest... my very favorite, of course are the kittens & cats: ~ for my dog-loving friends: and various others ~ and remember all of our woodland friends too: Happy Christmas Eve to you! Blessings from the Farm ~ Peter, Lori & Hannah
