PETITION TARGET: Putnam County Prosecuting Attorney Two kittens died horrifically after being abandoned and then run over in front of an adult cat and a third kitten in Putnam County, West Virginia. A witness allegedly watched a woman offload a cat and three kittens from a vehicle before she ran over two of the kittens — estimated to be just 4 weeks old — and left the scene without stopping, according to news. One kitten, who suffered a crushed skull, died before officers arrived while the second kitten, who had a broken back and crushed pelvis, died at a veterinary clinic after suffering from the serious injuries, according to news. Officers have charged the woman with six counts of animal cruelty for the intentional abandonments and for failing to seek veterinary care for the injured kittens. No kitten deserves to be brutally abandoned, run over, or left for dead. This case must be treated with the severity it deserves. Sign our petition urging Putnam County prosecutors to obtain justice for these kittens, including pursuing all six animal cruelty charges and a maximum ban on owning animals for the person(s) responsible.

PETITION TARGET: Davison County Prosecutors A sweet black Lab named Buddy reportedly had his mouth and legs bound with duct tape before being punched and kicked to death by his guardian’s boyfriend in Davison County, South Dakota, according to news. Officers who responded to a call for a domestic incident witnessed a man punching Buddy in the head with his closed fists, according to a probable cause affidavit. The officers then noticed that Buddy’s mouth — as well as his front and back legs — had been bound tightly with duct tape. Buddy was actively bleeding from his nose when officers removed the tape. Although they rushed him to a veterinary clinic, Buddy has since died. The man reportedly told officers that Buddy had gone to the bathroom inside the house, after which he took Buddy outside, bound him, and started beating him — taking a break only to go inside to rinse the blood off his hands before continuing the violent assault. Authorities have since charged the man with one count of animal cruelty, punishable by up to two years in prison and fines of up to $4,000, as well as several drug-related charges. The link has been well established that people who brutally abuse animals also often hurt people — and an increasing number of states are recognizing hurting animals as an act of domestic violence. It’s critical that this case be treated with the severity it deserves. Sign our petition urging the State’s Attorney’s Office to hold the individual(s) responsible for Buddy’s death fully accountable — including a lifelong ban on owning or being around animals ever again.
PETITION TARGETS: Delaware Gov. John Carney, House Judiciary Committee A family dog was lying in a pool of blood after being stabbed to death in a bedroom in Harrington, Delaware, when police arrived. In the home’s garage, officers also found the corpse of a woman who also had been stabbed to death, according to news reports. A growing body of research shows that people who hurt animals also hurt people and also that domestic abusers will often injure, kill, or threaten beloved companion animals to control their human victims. Now, a new package of bills in Delaware wants authorities to take those connections more seriously. SB 70 would allow family courts to include animal abuse as a factor when granting protection orders in domestic violence situations and also would allow judges to award sole custody of the animals to the survivor. The new law also would allow judges to prohibit abusers from having contact with the animals. SB71 would require law enforcement and family services to report suspected animal cruelty to the Office of Animal Welfare when investigating child welfare cases. Meanwhile, HB 95 would allow family courts to treat companion animals differently than other “property” during divorce proceedings — including for judges to consider the well-being and attachments of the pet and each guardian’s ability and effort to care for the pet. Two of the bills already have passed both the House and Senate, while SB 70 currently is under review in the House Judiciary Committee. It’s important for elected officials to take seriously the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse — and to show that they do by quickly passing these laws! Sign our petition urging Delaware’s governor and legislators to quickly pass these common sense bills and so stop the preventable suffering of both people and companion animals!

PETITION TARGET: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Animal cruelty videos are being allowed to spread like wildfire on Facebook, promoting horrific violence against monkeys, dogs, cats, and other species. From baby monkey torture videos -- in which helpless macaques are beaten, mutilated, and terrorized -- to fake rescues where innocent puppies are attacked by snakes or intentionally put in other painful and terrifying situations, animals are being deliberately harmed for views. It's time to stop the cruelty. Allowing animals to suffer purely for entertainment, or to gain social media followers and subscribers, is unacceptable, and platforms have an obligation to ensure that the content they permit to be displayed is safe. Animal torture has no place on social media where it may encourage others to inflict violence on innocent creatures, or even reach the eyes of children. We are calling on this social media giant to take action against the horrifying trend of animal abuse videos being posted and shared by the public. Please sign this petition to urge Facebook parent company Meta to take swift and meaningful action to identify and remove all content that promotes or glorifies animal suffering, shut down the groups and pages that post this horrific content, and enact policies and technologies to stop such content from being posted in the first place.
