How to Teach Kids about Sustainability and Becoming a Global Citizen
Each Sustainable Superheroes classroom guide is filled with fun, educational activities to help teach students about each of the 17 Global Goals! Our classroom guides have a variety of activities and worksheets to do as a full class, in small groups, and individually. Each one includes a recommended read-aloud list, a brain warm up, and plenty of fun lessons! These guides are made for grades 3-6 but can be adapted for younger and older students as well. Goal 1: No Poverty includes: - Suggested Read Aloud Books - Brain Warm Up - a quick worksheet to get students' brains warmed up with statistics related to the goal. - Wealthy and Stealthy - explore inequalities associated with wealth and power with a demonstrative full class activity. Students get to see a visual representation of different levels of wealth, which leads to a larger discussion about inequality and fairness. -Hungry Planet - using a website, students will compare and contrast the food that two families purchase for one week in two different countries. Questions related to cultural differences, financial resources, and availability of food come up in the reflection questions. - If The World Was 100 People - this small group activity uses teacher prompts to help students visualize the global population. Using a template of 100 people, students will use colours, drawings, markings, and other designs to visually represent world-wide statistics related to gender, nationality, literacy, food security levels, safe drinking water access, and poverty rates. Follow up with reflection questions that are carefully constructed to get students thinking without overwhelming them. - Purpose Pack Activity - learn about, and create, purpose packs full of essential items to donate to homeless shelters or local charities.

This earth day activity for middle school incorporates the SDG activities with your students as they learn about saving the planet in a fun, educational, and impactful challenge! It integrates the UN Global Goals, specifically Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
