Looking for a Camping Preschool Unit? This Preschool Pack is jam packed with fun and engaging camping themed activities! As with all of my preschool units, they are play based and options to differentiate for various abilities. You can purchase my Camping Preschool Unit in my TPT shop! Camping Preschool Pack Food is SO motivating for little learners. We spent a lot of time playing with (and eating)marshmallows this week! Hayden practiced counting to 20 with marshmallows. Then we worked on identifying numbers 11-20, which have been a little trickier for him. I named a number, and if he could find it, he got to eat that marshmallow. All of a sudden, he was identifying numbers with amazing accuracy!! Hayden has always loved puzzles, and how cute are these s'more numbers? He worked on 1:1 correspondence by counting each amount of objects, and then matching them to the number. Yep, another marshmallow activity. He traced the number with dry erase marker, and then counted marshmallows onto each ten frame. You could also use play dough for these mats. Dry erase markers make writing more FUN! He worked hard at tracing capital letters on these camping themed alphabet cards. We love these letter beads from Learning Resources. Seriously, we use them for everything. Hayden identified the beginning sound of each picture. Name crafts have been a huge motivator in writing. Hayden made a giant s'more, while writing his name. We worked on creating and extending patterns with colorful goldfish. Nature loose parts are one of my favorite tools to use for learning activities. We have a tray of our favorite treasured saved. Hayden picked a shape card, and then built the shape from rocks, stones, and other nature treasures. Beginning Sounds Tents- For this activity, I folded a notecard in half and added an animal sticker. My son placed the beginning letter for each animal in the tent. Hayden matched uppercase and lowercase letters, while identifying beginning sounds, to make s'mores. Sponge Painting Campfire- We used brown construction paper as logs, then dipped a sponge into orange and yellow paint! I love how this cute craft came out. We built letters by using toothpicks and marshmallows! It was a fun theme, I wish we would have had time for a few more activities. Here are some other activities included in this pack. Bear tracks read and stamp. This comes with letters and sight words. Camping roll and cover. Again, there are two options for this game. There is an addition roll and cover and just a simple roll and cover pictured. Make 10- Build a ten frame by following each recipe card. Practice subitizing and recognizing numbers in a ten frame, with this ten frame camping puzzle. Identify the beginning sound of each picture, OR identify the CVC word. Practice nonstandard measurement by measuring with a marshmallow ruler! You can grab this pack in my TPT shop, or it is also included in the year long bundle!! Looking for more preschool fun? Today we painted our outlined selves! We picked our favorite colors and had a blast! Later we went on a letter/word hunt through magazines! Some of us were looking for letters in our names, and others were looking for describing words!
It all started when a little friend brought in a beautiful geode to show the class. They were absolutely enthralled with the crystals growing inside! She set up a station where friends could come and look closer. The next day, another friend brought in a beautiful geode that looked a little different. They started wondering all kinds of things about the geodes which lead to discussions about if other rocks can be geodes and have crystals inside. I asked if they wanted to explore further to find out and they most definitely did! Here is my planning web. I set up one area for them to look closer and use their writing and drawing skills to document what they noticed. This area also was a perfect opportunity to sort objects based on their properties and attributes, then use writing and pictures to record how they sorted them. This was a favorite area to visit! I mixed science with art in our art area! I set out some polished agate that the kids thought were so beautiful! They used the digital microscope to look closer and notice the crystals and rings. Then they used water color to create the beautiful, colorful rings. That last step was to add salt to their wet watercolor to create the crystals and see how the salt grabbed the water color! I also set up an area with magnets for them to explore. I put some rocks in our sensory table with the sand and some photos of transient nature art for inspiration. Below, some friends worked to show feelings using the rocks. Some loved creating animals. Unfortunately, we were only a week into exploring the rocks and learning about the different types of rocks, crystals and jewels made from them when the schools were all ordered to close so we were not able to finish this exploration. This group really loved looking at these rocks and I hope it sparked an interest in geology for them. Some had big rock collections already and some started collecting during this study. I hope they continue to collect, observe and sort their collections by attributes. Egg cartons are a great way to keep their rock collections organized. Here are a few pictures to show some things they created in other areas of our room at the time. It has been over a week without seeing them and I miss these little friends of mine so very much! I am working on what my virtual/digital class will look like. I will work hard to help parents continue the discovery based learning that their kids love so much through our life experiences at home. The environment of our classroom was considered a teacher on its own in the way it was set up, but they also learn from their natural environment at home! Hopefully my next blog post can help with that! Until then, stay home and stay healthy!
