I remember the first time I saw a Rhino in the wild like it was yesterday (though it was actually more than 15 years ago). I was on my first morning safari drive in South Africa's Londolozi Private Game Reserve. The ground was charred black from a controlled burn, and the newly-grown grass was almost impossibly green. An adult female seemed to savor every bite, looking for all the world like an armored, overgrown cow. Minutes later, we oohed and ahhed as her tiny baby came into view from behind a bush. I have goosebumps now, just thinking about it. My experience at

Rhino – The word “rhinoceros” is of Greek origin; “rhino” meaning “nose“, and “ceros” meaning “horn“. At the beginning of the 20th century there were 500,000 rhinos across Africa and Asia. This fell to 70,000 by 1970 and further to just 29,000 in the wild today. (Information obtained from the “Save The Rhino Website”) […]
The Rhino is Losing its Battle We're losing five lions a day, four or five elephants an hour, and a rhino every seven and a half hours. Current predictions suggest the Black Rhino will go extinct in the wild within 20 years if the current poaching rate continues. The outlook is bleak. While you might think by now more laws are surely in place and poaching has likely lessened, in fact it is the opposite. According to WESSA, the numbers are shocking. Rhino deaths by poaching have tripled in the last five years in South Africa alone (1020 losses have been
It all started with the elephant. It was my first safari drive on my first afternoon at Londolozi Private Game Reserve, part of Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, on the western border of South Africa’s Kruger National Park. I piled into the elevated middle row of an open-backed Land Rover along with a German couple, Heinz and Uta; a tracker named Eckson; and our ranger/driver, Solomon. We drove past the Londolozi gate, through scrub-laden bushveld and into an open savanna where sparse trees created striking, angular profiles against the horizon. We saw several small birds and butterflies in a cornucopia of

Within our lifetime, rhinos could become extinct. Completely gone in the wild. Think about it--this magnificent creature could disappear from our planet forever. Rhinos are a critically endangered species: the highest level of endangerment, and they are facing an extremely high risk of extinction. As

Africa. It’s one place that always has a way of sneaking to the top my “bucket list” and for many people experiencing wildlife in their natural habitat on a continent unlike their own is a total dream. People who have been on African safaris share their experiences of seeing the “Big 5”, and as the Rhinoceros rapidly approaches extinction, I’m hoping the #JustOneRhino campaign will raise awareness before they no longer are on that top five list. Conservationists met in Kenya this week to talk strategy on ways to save the White Rhino. There are currently only 5 Northern White Rhino in existence. Think about that, only FIVE on the whole planet! Experts are trying to stop poaching while increasing the population and there is a way that we can help. Donating to Rhinos without Borders will create funds to aid in the relocation of these sweet creatures to areas with no poachers while simultaneously creating community outreach to ensure the safety of this dying breed. One Rhinoceros is killed on average every nine hours and with our help we can protect the ones that are still here. This year Travelers Building Change is helping efforts by asking for readers to donate and for your help you can be rewarded with a prize! Founder Jeremy Scott Foster felt the partnership between Travelers Building Change and Rhinos without Borders was in line with their mission to give back to the places we travel and experience. “The rhino poaching situation in Africa is critical and, given the incredibly high cost of saving them, we wanted to focus our efforts on a difficult project that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it should. With rhinos due to become extinct within the next 20 years, it seemed almost obvious that this was the organization we needed to support.” The goal is to raise $45,000 and 100% of our proceeds will go to the relocation of Rhinos.
