I’m currently working on my first job for the new MAD staff, and part of this project requires me to recreate the look/style of another cartoonist. MAD does this sort of thing quite often, having lampooned comic strips, comic books, book illustrators, and other visual artists over the years requiring one of their artists to “ape” the look of another artist to pull off the parody. Doing a perfect copy of the style of another artist isn’t exactly the goal with a parody. It’s more capturing the “feel” of the work and certain signature elements of it, so the viewer sees it and instantly recognizes…

After nearly 2 decades of being a fan I finally got to meet Tom Richmond (MAD Magazine) in Dublin in September last year. Not only meet, I participated in his caricature workshop that had been in the works for 3 years. Originally scheduled for 2020 it was postponed and then cancelled outright because of that ... This series of “How to Draw Caricatures” tutorials are a just a small taste of a larger and much more in-depth book I wrote called The Mad Art of Caricature! The book is 175 full-color pages, lavishly illustrated and contains greatly expanded explanations of the concepts presented in these tutorials, as well and a great deal of additional material on caricaturing other facial features, posture, hands, expression and more, techniques on drawing from live models, doing caricature for freeplace illustration and for MAD Magazine. This is a must have book for anyone interested in caricature, cartooning or humorous illustration. You can order it online here.…
I’m looking forward to seeing the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” soon, so I thought I’d take a new stab at the late, great Freddie Mercury. As usual, the original of this sketch is available in the Studio Store.
The National Cartoonists Society, of which I am a longtime member and a past president, just released a fun kid’s activity book as part of their “Cartooning for Kids” program. Originally this was going to be a printed book that the NCS would have available for schools, kids organization and for our children’s hospital visits, but the coronavirus scuttled all that. Instead, the NCS has made it available as a PDF that anyone can download and print out (although they will eventually have a printed version). They are suggesting a donation of any amount you choose for the book, all the proceeds of which will…
Had to draw the recently passed Chuck Berry this week. A true original, and one of the founding fathers of Rock and Roll. RIP.

Here’s my take on the late, great Marty Feldman. When I posted the subject this morning, I noted that Marty was an “easy one”. That’s not entirely true. People who have very obvious features to exaggerate are sometimes just as elusive to capture as someone without an obvious “hook” because there’s a tendency to try and exaggerate it all, when you really want to concentrate on what’s most important. It’s a little like skeet shooting. When one target takes off you know to zero in on that one and shoot it cleanly. When 20 targets take off at the same time, if you try to…
Back in issue 491 (July 2008), MAD decided to poke a little fun at the idea of “corporate colleges” like McDonald’s “Hamburger University”, and what other corporations might teach at such a school. Writers John Samony and Scott Maiko came up with this. Pencil roughs followed by final art (notice we changed the “Best Buy College” image in the final):
This was done (I think) for the now defunct Fade In magazine back in 2004 for a story about the various politicians who were possible running mates for John Kerry in the 2004 election. If I remember right the story focused on Hollywood supporters or connection to various democrats, which made sense because Fade In was a movie industry publication. There were a bunch of spot illustrations with the different candidates and their famous supporters. That art is lost but I did find this one pencil rough for a spot with Dennis Kuchinich and actor James Cromwell:
