Now represented by Gagosian, artist Titus Kaphar describes his latest paintings, From a Tropical Space, as a “surrealist, fictional Afro-futuristic narrative” about black mothers and the disappearance of their children.
Titus Kaphar (b. 1976) is celebrated for producing paintings, drawings and installations that initiate a contemporary dialogue with history. Marrying eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American portraiture with modernist gesture, Kaphar produces aesthetically striking, intellectually engaging artworks that often blur the line between historical fact and fiction. Representing a marked departure in his practice, Titus Kaphar: The Jerome Project is composed of small-scale works that engage with contemporary social issues, particularly the criminal justice system.

How does cultural context affect the interpretation of art? What makes artists' work transnational or national in character, and how will their visibility be impacted by either label? Art and the Politics of Visibility questions these dynamics, asking how the dissemination of visual culture on a global scale affects art and its institutions. Taking Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong's practice as a point of departure, this volume focuses on how politically charged images produced in contemporary art, cinema, literature, news media and fashion become widely consumed or marginalised. Through case studies of artists including Titus Kaphar, Sara Maple, Shirin Neshat, J.M. Coetzee, Barbara Walker and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the book illuminates the relationship between visibility, politics and identity in contemporary visual culture. 29 bw

White, abstract expressionist-like brushstrokes at once obscure and reveal portions of a standing black solider. Painted black lines and circles “sketch” the contour of his form back into the composition […]

Part of the exhibition curator's goal was to challenge preconceived notions of what race is, as well as the idea that it’s definable, that it even exists.
We spoke to the artist ahead of his shows at both Mass MoCA and MoMA PS1.
Buttressed by a weathered broom handle balanced on a selection of conspicuously titled books, the portrait has been wedged within the confines of its gilded edges. The broom handle freezes the scene in a gesture of activity, as an oversize figure struggles to fit into his undersized frame. Unfit Frame appropriates a portrait of Elihu […]

Titus Kaphar appropriates the visual language of American and European history painting and in doing so, takes the Eurocentric view of world history to task while illuminating injustice. The New York-based artist currently has two solo shows on view at Jack Shainman Gallery's separate locations in Manhattan. His dual exhibition touches upon the human rights abuses of the colonial era as well as the current fight for racial equality in the US. Haunting yet visually alluring, Kaphar's work tells stories of the African diaspora through imagery with a visceral, emotional impact.

Ripping Tradition To Shreds
Titus Kaphar ’06 M.F.A., who is leading a Summer Apprentice Program at Artspace, has garnered national attention for his work. Here are a few of his creations.
This painting is inspired by an iconic portrait of Thomas Jefferson that has been “peeled” away from the canvas to reveal a portrait of an enslaved black woman. She peers from behind the folded canvas; a bright green headscarf with gold band and golden pitcher are the most striking objects in an otherwise shadowed and […]
