A Lorax Birthday Party with Dr. Seuss inspired colorful tablescape with faux grass, truffula tree centerpieces + Sweet Tree-ts table with terracotta potted cupcakes
Simply Sprout hosted a Lorax party for Earth Day where our preschool friends learned about conservation, recycling and keeping the earth clean. They learned a few lessons from our friend the Lorax and had a lot of fun along the way. Learning to Recycle with the Lorax The little ones learned all about different recyclable materials and how to sort like objects. They sorted the paper, plastic and metal and put them into the corresponding bins...they caught on so quick! I see a lot of future recyclers in our midst.This is definitely a job they can help with around the house. Painting with Recyclables Our little friends painted personalized canvases using recycled materials. They each got their very own canvas, and chose their paint colors. They used plastic bags to apply the paint onto the canvas and then paper towel rolls to apply circles onto their painting. When they were all finished we removed the painters tape to reveal their masterpieces. They turned out simply beautiful....we definitely have some budding artist in our group! The last of the "Truffula Seeds" The kids decorated their own pots and planted the very last of the "truffula seeds!" They practiced identifying their colors and made their own swirl paper using liquid starch and craft paint. They loved seeing how their designs floated right on top of the starch. Even our littlest of sprouts got in on the action. To make the swirl pots just pour some liquid starch into a shallow container, add a few drops of craft paint. Have little ones create a swirl design using a toothpick. Then take your paper insert from the pot and float on top of the starch, pick up gently and set aside to dry. While our little ones waited for theirs to dry they listened to our inspiration story, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. "Truffula Tree" Cupcakes For treats they made "Truffula tree" cupcakes with coconut and cotton candy among other things. The lil sprouts iced their very own orange cupcake and added a little bit of coconut flakes ( dyed green of course) They put their cotton candy tufts onto the end of the straw and added it to their cupcake. They washed their cupcake down with a little bit of Lorax Lemonade! On the way out our little friends took a treat with them to remind them of all the fun they had today learning and exploring! ... At last. My little ones first birthday has come to an end! I have been looking forward to this party since before they were born, and have basically been planning it since then too! I saw the idea of a Lorax party and absolutely fell in love with it. It was so much fun to finally get to see the ideas I had in my head come to life! Which is why I love party planning so much! I think I also tend to over-plan and over-do things a little bit. And when that happens, things always tend to not go so smoothly. The morning of their party didn't start out too swell. Cohen had a fever of 101.3 for the first 8 hours of the day and right before the party started, it finally broke! But of course, Simon then got one! (you can never win with twins!) ;) Once guests started to arrive and babies started getting passed from person to person, we lost track of who was where and the next thing we know, Cohen fell all the way down the hardwood stairs! Ahhh! Me and my husband were a little bit freaked out! He instantly had a black eye and bruises all over his little body. :( At this point I was thinking nothing else could possibly go wrong! Nothing else traumatic happened (thank goodness) and the rest of the party was SO much fun! We played games like "pin the mustache on the Lorax," "Throw marshmallows through the Brown-Bar-Ba-Loots" and we had a super fun photo booth with some props! The party favors weren't your average little take home treat bag. Instead, I made some lorax pots for everyone to "plant their own truffula tree!" The first little segment of pictures are the (little) details which ironically were the most time consuming on my part! I know they will never remember this party, but it's the thought that counts, right!? He wouldn't even look at his cake! haha Cohen cried and cried so mommy had to hold him! Good picture of Cohens shiner! We are "One-Der-Ful!!" What a fun day we had!! The second the guests were gone, my exhaustion kicked in and I literally fell asleep sitting down on the floor. I woke up to my husband throwing me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. (how romantic!) haha Thank you to EVERYONE who came and made this a special day for our little twinners!! We have the most thoughtful family and friends!!

When I heard that a movie was coming out based on The Lorax book by Dr. Seuss (yep, a little barbaloot in the form of Lauren from Baby Lifestyles Magazine whispered it. Thanks, Lauren!), I was super excited. And THEN when I saw the trailer, I squeaked! A bright, beautiful, whimsical world AND a story that really has something wonderful to say.... What an AMAZING idea for a party, right??! I knew I didn't want to wait around for a client to come to me with the idea (because who knew if anyone ever would), so I took all my excitement for the idea and pulled together a fun inspiration party. So if you have a little Lorax in your house, who wants to celebrate their birthday AND "speak for the trees" I have a few ideas to help get the ball rollin' on your Lorax party! It's always fun to set the stage for a party with a welcome sign and for this party I made one that was Seussian inspired! Right off the bat I wanted to pull the kids into Dr. Seuss' magical world so I created a combo kid's table/dessert table. I decided that kids are always drawn to dessert tables like moths to a flame and parties are about fun, so why fight it? Give the kids what they want! This one is laden with brightly colored cupcakes decorated with a fanciful sugar flowers... ...cute Barbaloot and Lorax cookies... ...little milk bottles filled with orange juice and adorn with bows, mustaches and sweet stripey straws... ...not to mention adorable Lorax and Barbaloot cake pops! I have to mention that I was blown away by the Lorax cake pops! When I first approached Sarah, of Mom's Killer Cakes and Cookies, a couple months ago about this party I couldn't even imagine how you would make Lorax cake pops and what one would look like, but I knew I really wanted them on the table. Sarah never batted an eyelash. She just jumped right in (bravely going where no cake pop designer had gone before) and within days these beautiful cake pops arrived at my doorstep! Keeping the message of the book in the forefront of my mind, I used cloth napkins, bamboo plates and utensils, glass milk bottles, cardboard straws and reusable baking cups as well as an up-cycled nubby rug to help add recyclable, reusable, renewable whimsy to the table. And of course what Lorax tablescape would be complete without Truffula Trees??! I created these by adhering feather boas to a few styrofoam discs with neat pins and sticking them on some birch branches. (tutorial here: http://www.gwynnwassondesigns.com/2012/03/tips-hints-lorax-party-truffula-tree.html) All parties need activities to keep the good times rollin', so in the spirit of the Lorax I set up a potting station... ...and came up with a little game idea that I like to call "Recycling Relay". For this game each team is presented with a bin of various recyclable and non-recyclable items. (Be sure to mark each teams' items with a different color.) All the teams are lined up along a homebase line and about 10 feet away a recyclables sorting bin is set up. After a brief lesson about recycling and how to determine what items are recyclable and which are not, it's on your mark, get set.... GO!! A single member of each team takes one item at a time and runs it from the homebase line to the sorting bins, puts the item into the correct bin, runs back, and tags the next member of their team to repeat the process. Whichever team finishes first with all their items correctly sorted wins! Once all the sweets are devoured, games are played and happy birthdays are sung, it's time for all the little Lorax's to go home. And what better way to send them off to continue all the earth-lovin' goodness than with a small pot and packet so that they too can protect "last of the seeds"!
