By 1969, the Haight-Asbury district of San Francisco was the epicentre of countercultural life – a community where hippies could tune in, drop out, and reinvent themselves to their heart’s delight. With psychedelics as their guiding force, they rejected societal conventions to pursue the possibility of utopia on earth. “It was a real fluid scene,”... Read more »

“Jupiter” and “L’Amoureux” In 1967 the Linweave Paper Co. was looking to promote its outstanding paper products, so they hit on a terrific promotional idea—publish a large-format, full-color tarot deck with art in the contemporary style executed by several top graphic artists of the moment. So they hired Ron Rae, Hy Roth, Nicolas Sidjakov, and David Mario Palladini to do it, and the results was a lively whimsical deck that looks like it came straight out of Yellow Submarine. Unfortunately, the Linweave Paper Co. apparently closed up shop in 1989. So today, that means that the tarot deck is the thing it’s more known for. A collector’s item, it now goes for about $100 used on Amazon. The actual title of the deck is “Linweave Spells Your Fortune with a Modern Interpretation of the Medieval Tarot Pack: Presented on the Most Exciting Creative Papers in America”—just that alone is pretty awesome. I’ve selected a choice few for presentation here; you can see many more cards at these friendly websites. Linweave Tarot, cover “Le Mai” “La Mort” “L’Étoile” “La Justice” “La Roue de Fortune” “Le Soleil” “Le...

'Propellors' -- Fernand Léger, 1918 Fernand Léger’s paintings of this period combined Cubism’s simplified, abstract forms with an interest in industrial machinery. The dynamic rhythm of this composition’s planes, cylinders and tubes alludes to mechanical motion. Embodying both solidity and the promise of speed, the propeller emerged as an emblem of modern technology for Léger and his contemporaries. At a visit to an aviation fair in 1912, Marcel Duchamp (whose Bicycle wheel is also on view in this gallery) was said to have been so struck by the beauty of a propeller that he remarked to his fellow artists Léger
"Soma Goddess" - A 20x24 poster print of an original painting by Emily Balivet. Soma is an ancient intoxicating drink frequently mentioned in the Hindu Rig Vedas. Prepared from a mysterious plant and used in Vedic ritual, it was believed to be the ambrosia of the gods and granted immortality. It has been suggested that Soma may have been hallucinogenic mushrooms. Soma literally means "body" in Sanskrit and unites the holy trinity of mind, body, and spirit. Printed on matte Kodak Endura paper, the print measures 20x24 with a .25" white border allowance. The print is signed, titled, and dated on the back. ~All prints are packaged professionally and shipped via Priority mail (within the US) ~Overseas shipping via USPS First Class International ~Shipping discounts on multiple purchases A selection of print sizes and variations of "The Soma Goddess" are available here in my shop...
