Telegraph and Argus article 9th Feb 2012: www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/95199... The future of one of Ilkley’s most celebrated heritage buildings is again uncertain as talks continue over disputed development plans. Bradford Council planners have confirmed they do not support current plans for Kings Road mansion Heathcote, which would see the Edwin Lutyens-designed property split into two homes. The scheme, submitted by law firm Cobbetts LLP on behalf of the property’s new owners, attracted opposition from heritage organisations including The Lutyens Trust, Ilkley Civic Society and the Ancient Monuments Society But it has also emerged that a third party is interested in buying the Grade II* listed mansion on Kings Road, and retaining it as a single house. The Sir Edwyn Lutyens-designed house, dating from 1906, was sold by NG Bailey early in 2011, with a £2.5million price tag, after serving as offices for the firm since 1958. A legal firm acting on behalf of Heathcote’s new owners submitted a planning application in August, seeking to convert the historic building into two apartments. But six months later, the plan has yet to be determined by the council. Planning officer, Martyn Burke, confirmed that detailed talks were underway with the applicant with a view to a new scheme being put forward. “We’ve been having ongoing discussions with the applicants and also English Heritage to try to come up with alternative solutions,” he said. He said Bradford Council’s planning officers do not support the original plan, and would not approve it unaltered. “Our recommendation would be refusal,” said Mr Burke. If a satisfactory solution is found, the applicant will be encouraged to submit a new planning application. English Heritage had previously indicated it could not support the initial plans. Proposed alterations to the mansion’s interior – including splitting into two seperate homes – have caused concern for several organisations keen to see the historic building restored sympathetically. Great nephew of Sir Edwyn Lutyens and chairman of the Lutyens Trust, Martin Lutyens, felt changes would cause an “unacceptable harmful impact”, while Ilkley Civic Society chairman, Helen Kidman, said every effort should be made to keep the house in single occupation. It is understood a third party has expressed an interest in buying the house and retaining it as a single unit.
