My delightful Bobbles Tea Cosy by Sian Brown is a cheerful addition to the tea table. Sian sent me the knitting kit from her Make at Home range to review. It came in a lovely cotton tote bag with a printed pattern and the yarn. It was easy and enjoyable to make and the yarn is 100% aran weight wool. This would make a great gift for either a beginner or experienced knitter. Here's Sian's description of the kit from her website, "This is a knitting kit for the Bobbles Tea Cosy, part of the Make at Home range of knitting and crochet kits and patterns for the home. The range is inspired by growing up in the 60 s and 70s. This has a fun, nostalgic feel and combines a classic tea cosy with a pompom with added multi coloured bobbles which look like sweeties. The colours are cream, rose, olive, fuchsia and saffron, in an aran pure wool. The top is shaped using simple decreases, and the bobbles are knitted in randomly, the sample has 16 on each side. There is a pompom on the top. Measures 22 cm wide x 18 cm high not including pompom. This is a simple cosy to make and will add colour and fun to the table, fine for a beginner knitter and a great gift for any knitter. The includes yarn, pattern, and is packed in a cotton tote bag. Everyone knows how to make a pompom don't they? Well it's a while since I made one. I knew I needed to cut out some card templates. Hello, and welcome to my Cosie page!! This is a brief history of how I came to be hooked on making and selling tea cosies, along with lots of pics. Back in 2010 I made a fancy tea cosie to be auctioned for a fundraiser at Winchester Cathedral where I work. It was quite a job designing and making it to fit the tea pot I was provided with but it looked fab when finished and sold for £65!! At about the same time the daughter of my good friend Chris had a stall at the Art Market on the High Street once a month. This is Chris with the Baby Birds Cosie I made her - Chris suggested that perhaps I might like to make some more and have a table on the stall to sell them. That was the start of an obsession to design and make them that lasted a good 18 months! I even persuaded family and friends to make cosies for me... I was forever looking for ideas, patterns and wool - along with charity shop tea pots. One lady at the art market ended up not only buying 5 cosies but also started "supplying" me with tea pots to put them on! When I finally sickened grew tired of cosies, I moved onto making all sorts of things (allsorts - fancy that!) from fabric and wool and carried on for another 18 months. All the money I raised was donated to various charities, totalling around £3,000. Here are some photos of just a few cosies. Many I designed myself but where I used a pattern, I've tried to include a link. First up, a Marie Curie special from a free pattern by Loani Prior. This Marie Curie Daffodil Cosie was made as a raffle prize for the launch of their campaign in 2013 This is a Meercat Coke Can Cosie, made for another friend - well she doesn't drink tea, only coke! There was a small opening at the back of his neck for a straw so you didn't have to take the cosie off the can to drink. I did wonder how easy it was to pick up though... This is one of my favourite cosies and one I designed myself too. A nest full of baby birds. I made different "species" of birds too. Or I said they were certain species depending on the colour of wool I had used - there were blue tits, sparrows and black birds. I thought it might look quite cute to have a chick hatching out of an egg. It sort of did until you noticed the egg cup. That made it look a bit gruesome!! Chickens were also a theme that I kept returning to. Not just tea cosies but also a paperweight and a doorstop... A friend gave me some orange wool and it seemed a shame not to use it...It took ages to design this one, never mind make it! I sold it to a couple of students who screamed when they saw it!!! I made Gromit from a pattern by Rian Anderson - find it HERE Naturally, Gromit was quite popular, so I made him again. And again... I also branched out into a handful of sheep mug cosies - my own design I made several elephants - they all had their own name of course. Buggered if I can remember what this chap was called though...I used a pattern by Debi Birkin, available HERE. I made some minor alterations, like flowers in the grass, ridges on the trunk. Oh. and I left out her little indian boy. One of the tea pots I was given, had straight side and a flat lid. I thought it might be rather fun to have a go at making a castle cosie to fit it. Then I added a drawbridge and a knight, then Rapunzle - although she didn't quite work!! It took forever... This Honeypot was a made to measure affair for a 1920's style teapot in a rather nasty mustard colour. Again, this one took a long time as their was so much work involved. I was very pleased with how it turned out though. I'd met a lady from Edinburgh Zoo who worked with the Gentoo Penguins. She'd asked if I could design and make one for her. This chap was my first go - a sort of dry run. And this is Gerald, complete with 2 chicks! The chicks turned out very cute!! When I first started making cosies to sell at the Art Market, I asked for help so I'd have enough. Some friends helped and a couple of the volunteers in the cafe at work. There was also a lady called Jenny, although how she heard about it escapes me. She made me 2 and this is one of them - Freddo Frog. He looks rather good doesn't he?? The grassy hill with rabbits popping out was quite popular and I think between us we made 4 of these cosies. This is another Debi Birkin design. I'd had so much fun making the first castle with it's drawbridge and knight that I made another. The teapot wasn't as nice though. And I left out Rapunzle on this one too! But one of my absolute favourites was this beauty - I called her the Green Goddess. Although in the end I changed her name to Green Tea as she hadn't sold. I thought a change of name might help. So did reducing the price! I'd been given the most beautiful delicate "elfin" tea pot with a pointed hat. That meant I had to have an open top and it had a pearl button fastening above the handle - without that, there's no way you'd have got it on and off. I thought she was fabulous and if I was a tea drinker I would have kept her and used her (I'm not - I absolutely HATE tea!!). And I had great fun designing her too. June 2017 It's been quite a while since I made a knitted tea cosie, fun though they were. As you might have guessed from elsewhere on my blog, my current passion is crochet. I recently saw an article in Crochet Now magazine to make a tea cosie to enter into a competition as part of Marie Curie's Blooming Great Tea Party launch. And I thought I'd have a go. I've never crocheted a tea cosie before..... I had some vague ideas and talked them over with the girls at work until I had something more concrete in my head. Here she is with the magazine article as I made a start - (I did take some "in progress" shots but can't for the life of me find them at the moment!) July 2017 I won the Runner Up prize!! Woo Hoo!!! Here are some pics of my cosie, plus the winning design in the August magazine - I'm really not surprised I didn't win - and I never actually expected to - just look at the winning entry!! I have been using a lot of this Colour Variation Floss in the last couple of weeks, including some in my new 'Abel, the Stitch Explorer' pattern. I actually used a ridiculous number of different colours in that pattern as you will find out if you decide to purchase it. (Still working out the details but I'm aiming at launching it next week!) Some of these variation threads have more than one colour in a skein, other skeins have different tones of one colour. The colours are very soft and the changes in colour (or tone) very subtle. Anyway these Colour Varation Flosses, or any other variegated floss for that matter, obviously are best used in a bit of your embroidery (or cross stitch) where the change of colours can be seen. Having said that, I also sometimes use small bits of variegated floss for a detail just because it's the right colour! (or so I think). I think (cross)stitching lettering with variegated floss could give lovely results too. Where do you use variegated threads for? If you follow the &Stitches blog (or Facebook page or Twitter) you will probably already have seen a couple peeks of projects from our next issue. The second issue of &Stitches is all about books and reading. Our featured artist is the very lovely and talented Cate Anevski! This is the pattern I designed... The pink fluted cosy from the 1935 pattern published by Madame Weigel in Melbourne. You'll need a pair of 4mm needles, 100g of the main colour in 8 ply yarn, and 50g of the contrast colour. I've used a variegated yarn as the contrast colour, and that's produced the striped effect. This is knitted without shaping The finished cosy measures 26 cm wide and 18 cm high; this fits a medium sized pot, around 4 cup capacity. You could gather up the middle flutes with a ribbon, or use an I-cord as I did. In the original, 7 flutes are gathered. I've gathered 9. Do whatever fits your pot the best. The rose and leaves are the same ones you'll find under the 'Crochet tea cosy' tab. Using the main colour, cast on 130 stitches, and knit one row. Next row, knit 10 stitches; join in the contrast colour, knit 10. Using the main colour, and compressing the stitches already knitted, knit 10. Let that thread hand loose at the back, and, compressing the knitted stitches, knit 10 in the contrast colour. Continue alternating all along the row, finishing with 10 main colour. Next row, knit 10 main colour, bring the yarn forward (to the wrong side of the work); pick up the contrast yarn (which will be facing you); bring it to the back, and knit 10; yarn forward. Pick up the main colour, yarn back and knit 10. Repeat this action to the end of the row. These two rows are repeated until the work measures 36 cm, or a few cm more, depending on the size of the pot. The original pattern says 12 inches; but this is way too short. Cast off. Fold over and sew the sides together for about 4cm. Locate the middle row of the work, and gather together 7 flutes along this line. A ribbon or an I-cord can be threaded through the knitting to hold them together with a bow; you'll need a length of about 60 cm. ################################################################################# This beautiful tea cosy is from a vintage pattern, and is an entry into the tea cosy competition. It's so colourful! I have a copy of the pattern somewhere and will put it on here soon. Yellow cosy from the 1930's, Madame Weigel's Cushions and Cosies book. I remember my Grandmother having one of these tea cosies back in the 1950's. It was in green and a mustard yellow. This is an adaption of the original pattern...the yarns were different then, but the original pattern mostly works. For the flowers on top, I've wound the yarn around my fingers as it says in the original...however I recently saw a great idea...wind the yarn around the prongs of a fork to give a more compact and neat flower. Pattern You'll need 8ply yarn for the lining and top. The pattern on the outside is knitted with 2 strands of 4 ply yarn, about 25 g of each 4 ply, 50g 8 ply. 3x4mm knitting needles. (This is great to use up leftover baby yarn or sock wool. The lining helps keep the tea very warm.) The one in the photo was knitted with 2 strands of the same colour; using 2 different colours gives a nice effect, too. Abbreviations. K=knit, P=purl, WRN=wool around needle, M1=make a stitch by knitting the yarn between 2 stitches. Using a pair of 4mm needles, and 2 strands of 4 ply yarn, cast on 46 stitches. Row 1. Purl Row 2. Knit 2 together all along the row. Row 3.( K1, WRN, M1, WRN), repeat to the end of the row; finish the row with WRN, M1. Row 4. Knit, dropping the WRN (46stitches) Repeat these 4 rows 9 more times. Break off the yarn, and leave the stitches on the needle. With the right side facing you, pick up and knit across the cast on stitches, using the 8 ply lining yarn. (46 stitches). Knit in garter stitch (all rows in K stitch), until it measures the same as the patterned piece, ending with the needles on both ends of the work, pointing in the same direction. Fold the work with the right side of the patterned piece facing you. Hold the 2 needles with the stitches together, and with the 3rd needle and the 8 ply yarn, knit 2 stitches at once (one from each needle). 46 stitches. Purl 1 row. Next row, start decreasing. Row 1. K11, K2 tog, K9, K2 tog, K9, K2 tog, K11 , K2 tog Row 2, and every second row, P2 tog, P to last 2 sts, P2 tog. Row3. K9, K2 tog, K8, K2 tog, K8, K2 tog, K10 Row 5. K7, K2 tog, K8, K2 tog, K8, K2 tog, K7 Row 7. K5, K2 tog, K7, K2 tog, K7, K2 tog, K6 Row 9. K4,K2 tog, K6, K2 tog, K6, K2 tog, K4 Row 11. K2, K2 tog, K5, K2 tog, K5, K2 tog, K3 Row 13. K7, K2 tog, K7 Row 15. K5, K2 tog, K6 Row 17. Cast off. Make the other side of the cosy the same as above. Slip stitch together the sides of the lining to the patterned pieces. Sew the sides and tops together, leaving enough of an opening to fit the handle and spout comfortably. Make flowers. Wind one strand of 4 ply firmly around 2 fingers of the non-dominant hand...about 28 times.Slip the loops off carefully, and use the ends of the yarn to tie securely in the middle. Alternatively, wind the yarn around the prongs of a fork; tie securely in the middle, then slip off the for. Sew the flowers onto the top of the cosy; work 3 or 4 French knots in the centre of each flower in a contrasting yarn. Work as many flowers as needed to cover the top. Work double crochet around a ring of 3-4cm diameter. Sew to the top. *********************************************************************************** *********************************************************************************** *********************************************************************************** Vintage and blokey...as not all tea drinkers are women.. The pattern was published in 1935, one of Madame Weigel's popular designs. She had it illustrated with a pretty satin bow, quite feminine. But I had some blue and grey variegated yarn, not very feminine at all. So the satin ribbon has been replaced with a moss stitch scarf! I've had to modify the instructions quite a bit, as the pattern didn't work out in the original version. Basket stitch tea cosy. You’ll need 100g of 8 ply yarn for the outer patterned layer, and 100g of 8 ply yarn for the lining; which is featured as a contrast as it folds over at the top. This cosy could be knitted in many decorative stitches; it could be a scarf that was never finished, adapted to become a tea cosy. Tension, measured over lightly pressed fabric, using 4mm needles. Garter stitch (knit every row); 18 stitches and 20 rows measure 10cm x 10cm Basket stitch: 22 stitches and 32 rows measure 10cm x 10cm. Using 8 ply yarn, cast on 63 stitches. Pattern: 1st row Knit Row 2 *Purl 3, knit 7* Repeat to the end of the row. Row 3 *Knit 3, purl 7* Repeat to the end of the row. Row 4 As row 2. Row 5 Knit Row 6 Knit 5, *Purl 3, knit 7*. Repeat to the last 5 sts; k 5. Row 7 Purl 5, *Knit 3, purl 7*. Repeat to the last 5 sts; p 5. Row 8 As row 6. These eight rows form the pattern. Continue knitting till the work measures approximately 40 cm. Break off yarn, and join in the lining yarn. As you knit the first row of the lining, decrease 12 stitches evenly across the row. This is because the garter stitch produces a wider fabric than the basket stitch. Knit the 51 remaining stitches (garter stitch) until it’s the same length as the basket stitch section; cast off a little loosely. Remember that you now have 12 fewer stitches, and the cast-on and cast-off rows will be sewn together. Fold the work in half lengthways, and sew together the cast on and cast off edges. Slip stitch the lining to the patterned side along the other 2 edges. Fold in half again, and sew the sides together for about 2 cm on each side. Fold the tops back to show the lining, and secure with a few stitches. You can then either buy about a metre of pretty ribbon and tie a bow, or knit a little scarf using 9 stitches, knit 1, purl 1, across every row. Add a little fringe to the ends to finish it off. How's this for a tea-cozy? (source) No, I didn't knit it. Oh my goodness, I am laughing just thinking that someone might have thought that. I am so lame at knitting that I am still working on doll blankets and shams. haha! But, I do really want to learn to knit this. I did knit a couple of sweaters many many moons ago but it took me forever. I'm going to have to get practicing more and then someday I will attempt this. If God is my witness...hahaha! As winter drags on we enjoy some coffee and muffins. To me, coffee tastes better in a tea-cup. The recipe for the blueberry muffins is in my previous post. It is a little milder today than the weekend and the sun is trying hard to show it's face. The cats are all cozy and warm. Sierra is always well prepared for a dull, dreary day, though.
