Brian Schultz, assistant professor of biblical and religious studies at Fresno Pacific University, and Randall Buth, director of the Biblical Language Center, led 24 participants from 10 states and two African countries in a New Testament Greek workshop August 3-11. These scholars did more than translate texts and discuss grammar in sessions at California State University, Fresno. They brought New Testament Greek to life by speaking it.

Very few learners of Hebrew and Greek ever reach the ability to read biblical texts fluently—that is, for pleasure, at a normal rate, for extended periods of time, and without frequent recourse to lexicons and grammar helps. The primary reason for

An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar focuses on the linguistic and syntactic elements of Koine Greek to equip learners for accurate interpretation. Drawing upon twenty years of Greek teaching experience and the latest developments in linguistics and syntax, Harris introduces students to basic linguistic concepts and categories necessary for grasping Greek in ways that are clear and intuitive. This solid foundation enables students first to internalize key concepts, then to apply and build upon them as more complex ideas are introduced. Several features are specifically designed to aid student's learning: Key concepts are graphically coded to offer visual reinforcement of explanations and to facilitate learning forms and identifying their functions Key concepts are followed by numerous examples from the Greek New Testament Students learn how to mark Greek texts so that they can begin to "see" the syntax, identify the boundaries of syntactic units, and construct syntactic outlines as part of their preaching or teaching preparation Four integrative chapters, roughly corresponding to the midterms and final exams of a two-semester sequence, summarize material to date and reinforce key concepts. Here students are also introduced to exegetical and interpretive concepts and practices that they will need for subsequent Greek studies and beyond. "Going Deeper" and "For the Curious" offer supplemental information for students interested in learning more or in moving to advanced language study. The accompanying workbook and video lectures (both sold separately) reinforce key concepts through additional contact with the material from each chapter of the grammar. All exercises in the workbook are taken from the Greek New Testament and the Septuagint and include extensive syntactical and exegetical notes to aid students.
Have you considered giving koiné Greek a try? Koiné Greek happens to be the Greek used in the New Testament. My dad happens to have an advanced degree in Biblical language…however…that language mastery doesn’t flow easily through the gene pool. I not about to head off to graduate school to learn the stuff…I need an easy breezy method. I just had the chance to review Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek!-Level 3 Set from Greek ‘n’ Stuff. What I Received Level 3 Worktext Full Text Answer Key Pronunciation CD This program is good for students 4th grade and up. IF your student has had previous koiné Greek or Latin... Level 4 might be a better fit. My only koiné Greek study was a 6 week course a couple of summers ago. And yes. My Dad taught it. And yes. I spent my time doodling in my notebook and eating brownies. Sorry, Dad. I am just not that smart. The Level 3 Worktext begins with a review of the Greek alphabet and then advances to vocabulary. There are 36 lessons. The lessons are set up to be completed one page a day or you can slow down the pace if necessary. The Worktext has a helpful appendix and a set of flashcards to be cut out and reviewed daily. This product is consumable and intended to be used by only one student. The Full Text Answer Key is copy of the Worktext with ALL the answers filled in along with some helpful teaching tips. It also contains a grammatical chart and suggested lesson schedule. The Pronunciation CD begins with a song to help learn the Greek alphabet. It also contains recordings of the pronunciation of each word being taught. My CD contains both Level Three and Four. How I Used It I am currently working through the program in the mornings during my quiet time. The lessons are fairly quick and I haven’t had any difficulty working through it. And no. Brownies haven’t been part of my morning study…unfortunately. I'm going to share a little of my progress with you. This has been a gentle and forgiving program so far. We begin by writing out the Greek alphabet. There are quite a few different quite of activities. In this particular one, I wrote out "a man" and even got to doodle! See! There is doodling in Greek! This activity had me writing out the word for "and" and identifying the phrases. I apologize for the blurry picture, but this is about the only way I can make a basket! Just ask my husband and son! I LOVE the variety of activities. Beyond my own personal study, I have another goal in mind. I have been toying with the idea of adding an ancient language to Josiah’s work study. He is in High School, and while we’ve touched on Latin, I’m still deciding what direction would be more beneficial to him. However...Josiah is dyslexic and I need to do some more research. In all other ways, this particular study is user friendly. The text is very readable, the pages uncluttered and easy to follow AND the Answer key is the best thing ever...not to mention the pronunciation guide. This is a fun and very doable course for all kinds of folks. I sure have been enjoying myself! After poking around the Greek’n’Stuff, I’m interested in checking out the Latin along with some of their other Bible studies. If you aren’t quite sure what kind of program you need or where to start, I encourage you to go check out their site. They have sample pages and placement quizzes to start with. The Homeschool Review Crew got to enjoy quite a number of Greek'n'Stuff's excellent products. You can connect with Greek'n'Stuff via the following social media outlets. So, the phrase - "It's all Greek to me" was probably written by my family, making us the perfect test students for a Greek curriculum, so needless to say, I was thrilled to get a chance to review Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 3 Set from Greek 'n' Stuff, which is intended for students approximately 4th Grade and older, written by Karen Mohs. Other Homeschool Review Crew members got a chance to review: Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set (Good for students as young as 2nd Grade) I Can Study Jonah & Ruth Alone With God Bible Study (13 week study) KJV NIV I Can Study Esther Alone With God Bible Study (13 week study) KJV NIV I Can Study I Samuel Alone With God Bible Study (39 week study) KJV NIV I Can Study Acts Alone With God Bible Study (52 week study) KJV NIV What is Hey, Andrew! Teach me Some Greek! - Level 3 Set from Greek 'n' Stuff? Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! series includes Level 1 through 8. I received Level 3 which is intended for 4th grade and up, students who have completed Level 2, or older beginners who want to learn whether or not they've completed any of the earlier levels. My daughter is just beginning her Fifth Grade year, so it was perfect for her. The company recommends starting at this level for 4th graders and even if you are an adult and have no prior Greek experience, like me. The materials have weekly lessons and daily assignments. The first couple of lessons teach the alphabet at a pace of three letters per day and then the lessons begin to slowly teach vocabulary. Basically, the learning consists of: Workbook written practice assignments Flashcard practice daily With Vocalization of the Words (This is the KEY to the entire program) Copy Work using an Interlinear Greek Bible (Bible Not Included in the set) Practice Practice Practice There is very little to no parent/teacher prep. There are some brief instructions and teaching tips in the Answer Key to help guide you, but it's pretty much an open book, easy-to-follow format. There are 36 lessons in the book, but the emphasis is on learning and mastering a concept before moving on. It's more important to practice until the student feels confident in the newly learned skill rather than to move forward unprepared. Here is an example of what the Teacher Lesson Tips looks like: The book takes a gradual approach and builds the student up each day with reinforced learning and doesn't suddenly drop you off a cliff expecting you to speak fluently suddenly, which is what many foreign language courses tend to do. Level 3 approaches grammar in what is called an inductive format. That means it takes parts to whole as opposed to how they approach grammar beginning in Level 4, which is a deductive format, in other words, whole to parts. The workbooks are set up with the intention of the student completing one workbook page each day along with flashcard practice, however if you are an older student, you may be able to complete more than one page per day. I received a nice spiral-bound paper back student workbook and an answer key that is also paperback, glossy covers, and a pronunciation CD. The Answer Key provides teaching tips and brief instructions for each lesson and then contains a complete student workbook with the answers filled in and an appendix along with flashcard tips. The student book is set up with 36 lessons and a nice appendix filled with helpful learning references and tips. The back of the book contains pages of flashcards to be cut out and used for memory learning work. How Did We Use It? Flashcards One look at this page, and my daughter lit up - "Is that the Pi symbol?" So, she was hooked. She recognized a Greek letter and wanted to know more. We were so happy to see that the workbook included activities such as drawing, one of my daughter's favorite things to do. What Did We Think? First of all, I have to say that I absolutely love the name of the company. The 'n' stuff" part of the name takes a sophisticated sounding study and makes it sound as if even we common folk (I speak for my family) will be able to grasp it. I knew basically nothing about Greek going into this and neither did my daughter. When my daughter first saw the letters, she was amazed. But, it didn't take long, and I'm talking the first day here, before she was excited and encouraged that she could tackle this. My favorite part of the study is the copy work using a Greek Interlinear Bible. The book suggests starting in the Gospel of John and practice writing/copying the original Greek text. I really appreciate the learning approach these book and CD use in reinforcing the concepts over and over until you master it. Hello dear readers. I have shared with you before that our son learned Latin. He enjoyed learning to read passages of the Bible in Latin. He loves when we read, study, and have discussions about God’s Word. A student of the Bible will benefit from learning the original meaning of words in the Greek. We were blessed with an opportunity to review the Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set from Greek 'n' Stuff. Greek 'n' Stuff was founded in 1996 by Karen Mohs. She creates curriculum for homeschool, Christian, and classical schools. These consist of Biblical Greek series- Hey, Andrew!Teach Me Some Greek!, Classical Latin series- Latin’s Not So Tough!, and Bible Studies series- Alone with God. Our son has started learning koine Greek with Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set from Greek 'n' Stuff. Check out the FAQ page to learn what Kione is. Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set is for students as young as 2nd grade. It can also be used with older students/adults who want to learn the Greek alphabet and basic Greek words. For review we were sent the following: *Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! Student Worktext- is 144 pages, begins with alphabet review then on to learning new vocabulary words. (cost: $18.95) *Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! “Answers Only” Answer Key- this is a smaller text that references the student worktext page numbers and answers for the lessons. (cost $4) *Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! Pronunciation CD- has Biblical Greek, Alphabet song, and pronunciation of the Greek letters (cost: $10) The student worktext is consumable and intended to be used up by one student. Their copyright does not allow for you to make copies of the pages to use with more than one student. In the very back you will find the flashcards needed for learning each alphabet and some words. Included are some tips for using them. These cards will need to be cut out and folded in half. To make the cards more durable/sturdy you could laminate them or glue the fronts and backs to index cards. The inside cover of the pronunciation audio CD tells you what page number in (the particular level) the student worktext each track goes with. Greek 'n' Stuff also offers a “Full Text” Answer Key (duplication of worktext with the answers filled in), Quizzes and Exams, Flashcards on a Ring (printed on cardstock, cut, and hole punched), and more. There are 30 lessons. Lessons 1-4 consists of the alphabet review (alphabet was covered in Level 1). Lessons 5-7 consists of the alphabet practice. Here the student has an opportunity to have a little fun while learning through doing some matching, writing the letters, solving codes, and dot-to-dot. Lessons 8-29 consists of learning new vocabulary or vocabulary practice. Lesson 30 is a final review of what all was learned. The lessons are to be done weekly where you complete an assignment daily. On the bottom of each worktext page there is a box with a reminder to practice the flashcards. Consistent (everyday) practice is essential to helping the letters/words that are learned to stick. My son enjoyed learning the correct way to sound some of the familiar letters that he had been saying wrong all along. First I let him listen through the whole audio CD before getting started with the lessons. I just wanted to see his reaction to it. It’s obvious it’s geared toward the primary ages by how it sounds. After all he is 17 so I was not expecting him to love it. He did listen to it when necessary to be sure he was sounding out the letters correctly as he went along in the lessons. Each day he did a few pages since they took him less than 20 minutes to complete. He did not have to make use of the flash cards much after lesson 7. That’s because as he reached the lessons with the vocabulary words it was obvious he had all the letters and their pronunciation memorized. Many times he shared with me what he had learned of the Greek letters and their sounds. I believe learning this bit of Greek language will help him in his Biblical Studies for years to come. Highlights A practical, understandable, and accessible resource for learning the language of the New Testament.Introducing Koine Greek is intentionally designed to assist the student in learning Koine Greek without becoming overwhelmed. Author(s): Jared M August 284 Pages Language + Art + Disciplines, Alphabets & Writing Systems Description Book Synopsis A practical, understandable, and accessible resource for learning the language of the New Testament. Introducing Koine Greek is intentionally designed to assist the student in learning Koine Greek without becoming overwhelmed. Each of the twenty-nine chapters are written concisely and structured logically. Every translation activity and grammatical exercise is aimed to build confidence and assurance in the student's ability to read, understand, and translate the texts of the New Testament. Review Quotes Introducing Koine Greek by Jared August is the only work on the market written primarily for college undergraduates. It is, by design, understandable, practical, and accessible. August's goal is to provide the student only what he/she needs to know to learn the language. Here is a concise but complete first year grammar organized for maximum efficiency and effect. I highly recommend this great work. David L. Allen, Distinguished Professor of Preaching, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Comedian Jim Gaffigan compares raising multiple children to drowning ... and someone handing you a baby! So it is with first-year Greek. It is often overwhelming. Students begin with enthusiastic anticipation yet soon find themselves struggling to keep their head above the water, sometimes as early as chapter three! Those that manage to finish often find themselves intimidated instead of helped by the Greek text. Dr. Jared August's Introducing Koine Greek succeeds because it keeps first-year Greek accessible. From beginning to end, it is thoroughly confidence building. It does this by concentrating on the essentials, keeping memorization to a minimum, and always using examples from the Bible itself. While an excellent Greek scholar in his own right, Dr. August clearly teaches with the beginning student in mind. He comes alongside as a friend and mentor in the process and sets the student up for ongoing study and success. I cannot recommend his work highly enough. Todd Bolton, Professor of Biblical Languages, The Cornerstone Bible College and Seminary I have often longed for a first-year Greek text that captured a little of the approach I enjoyed in my first exposure to Greek-personally encouraging and clearly communicated. Despite my search, I have always come up empty. When teaching the language, I have been forced to use one text or another and do my best to approximate the methods of my first instructors and tutor. Imagine my joy to read the textbook you hold in your hands. Finally! After all these years Dr. Jared August has captured this methodology and placed it in a textbook. In this volume, Jared August has given us the new standard textbook for first-year Greek students. It will likely enjoy the distinction of excellence for generations to come. Mark H. Ballard, President and Professor of Applied Theology, Northeastern Baptist College Dr. August has written a Greek grammar for undergraduate students that is both practical and accessible. This textbook not only expedites the learning of Koine Greek, but also empowers students to apply the Scriptures to life. A manageable, straightforward resource that is pedagogically written with little complexity and greater intentionality toward the students' retention and understanding of God's revealed Word. Wayne T. Slusser, Seminary Dean and Professor of New Testament and Greek, Baptist Bible Seminary

Highlights This in-depth yet student-friendly introduction to Koine Greek provides a full grounding in Greek grammar, while starting to build skill in the use of exegetical tools. About the Author: Rodney J. Decker (1953-2014) received his ThD from Central Baptist Theological Seminary and served as professor of Greek and New Testament at Baptist Bible Seminary in Pennsylvania. 704 Pages Religion + Beliefs, Biblical Reference Description About the Book A recognized expert provides an in-depth yet student friendly introduction to Koine Greek that integrates textbook and workbook and is supplemented by robust web-based resources. Book Synopsis This in-depth yet student-friendly introduction to Koine Greek provides a full grounding in Greek grammar, while starting to build skill in the use of exegetical tools. The approach, informed by twenty-five years of classroom teaching, emphasizes reading Greek for comprehension as opposed to merely translating it. The workbook is integrated into the textbook, with exercises appearing within each chapter rather than pushed to the end or located in a separate book. This enables students to practice concepts as they encounter them in the chapter--ideal for distance learning or studying beyond the traditional classroom. The book covers not only New Testament Greek but also the wider range of Bible-related Greek (LXX and other Koine texts). It introduces students to reference tools for biblical Greek, includes tips on learning, and is supplemented by robust web-based resources through Baker Academic's Textbook eSources. Resources for students include flash cards and audio files. Resources for professors include a test bank and an instructor's manual. From the Back Cover "Reading Koine Greek is readable and user friendly, yet remarkably sophisticated linguistically. Students learn not just forms and paradigms but, far more important, how language works and how the text as a whole functions as a communicative event. Students will also benefit from the hands-on workbook approach, which teaches by using Greek examples from the New Testament, the Septuagint, and other Koine texts. This is a pedagogically effective, accurate, and comprehensive text." --Mark L. Strauss, Bethel Seminary San Diego "A wonderful Koine Greek grammar for the twenty-first century. Unlike most grammars currently in print, Decker's work is up to date with the cutting-edge issues in Greek linguistics, including verbal aspect, voice, lexical semantics, and pronunciation. This grammar demonstrates clear pedagogical concern, making the material accessible and teachable." --Constantine R. Campbell, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School "Reading Koine Greek reflects the most recent discussion of the Greek language, presented in a clear and practical way. Naturally, it will be especially attractive to Greek instructors in colleges and seminaries who share Decker's understanding of Greek verbal aspect. Even those who understand the topic differently may be tempted to use this work, given the attractive features of this introductory grammar." --Roy E. Ciampa, Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary "It is a joy to see a new textbook in Biblical Greek in keeping with the best of traditional pedagogy that is also attuned to more recent insights into how students learn and how the language works. I am particularly pleased to see Greek voice forms and usage presented in terms of the newly emerging consensus in this area." --Carl W. Conrad, Washington University in St. Louis (retired) "Decker's decades of experience teaching Greek shine through this beautifully laid-out textbook. It is strongly recommended for teachers who want their students to get a thorough grounding in both Greek and exegesis, as well as for those wanting to recharge their Greek." --Stephen C. Carlson, Uppsala University "Rodney Decker's consummate skill as both a Greek scholar and a teacher is clearly evident in Reading Koine Greek, which draws heavily on insights from modern linguistics while always remaining very accessible. Students will find using Reading Koine Greek to be like having a master teacher guiding them through the sometimes turbulent waters of learning the language of the New Testament." --Martin Culy, editor, Baylor Handbook on the Greek New Testament About the Author Rodney J. Decker (1953-2014) received his ThD from Central Baptist Theological Seminary and served as professor of Greek and New Testament at Baptist Bible Seminary in Pennsylvania. He authored "Temporal Deixis of the Greek Verb in the Gospel of Mark with Reference to Verbal Aspect "and several major Greek study books, including "A Koine Greek Reader" and the forthcoming Mark volumes in the Baylor Handbook on the Greek New Testament.
