I am a proponent of my students getting to be involved in science- it’s not a secret that they love hands-on activities. The problem was that the activities the standard curriculum provided just weren’t cutting it. Simply reading and answering questions wasn’t helping my students understand the scientific concepts. To make my life easier, I ... Read more

These high school chemistry worksheets are full of pictures, diagrams, and deeper questions covering all aspects of chemical reactions! This unit is meant to cover the basics of chemical reactions (combustion, synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement) along with solubility and metal reactivity. These 20 pages provide a lot of ways a teacher could differentiate because they provide options for teachers. Teachers can cover these concepts all separately: 1) Balancing and classifying equations 2) Predicting reactions (given that the reaction can occur) 3) Predicting reactions (given that a reaction in a question may or may not occur, students have to decide!) Each type of reaction (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion) are treated separately and teachers can teach them separately and have students practice using these pages. This unit is designed to help students practice these skills that are important for the rest of the year in chemistry. In the next unit I write, I will be creating stoichiometry problems that students will answer using these chemical equation balancing and predicting skills. This unit is part of my Differentiated Chemistry Whole Year Homework Bundle. These are non-editable PDF files. Each PDF file contains the student page, the answer key, and my terms of use page. Please see my preview for more details. Frequently Asked Questions: 1. Why should you purchase this bundle? - This unique homework sheet unit (as part of my whole year bundle) will help you teach a cohesive and consistent program all year. - These homework pages were carefully designed with a wealth of images! I have created many of the images myself and other images are licensed from professional designers. These homework pages are not plain worksheets with text questions that can be easily copied from a textbook. Each page is meant to help students to learn chemistry in a very visual way. Students circle, color, and analyze pictures and diagrams in ways that are far superior to plain text textbook questions. 2. What does this unit contain? This unit contains 20 pages: 1. Chemical Equation Basics 2. Solubility Basics 3. Is It Soluble? 4. Reactivity Series Practice 5. Write Chemical Equation from Sentence 6. Write a Sentence from a Chemical Equation 7. Oxidation Numbers 8. Balance and Classify: Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions 9. Balance and Classify: Single Replacement Reactions 10. Balance and Classify: Double Replacement 11. Balance: Combustion Reactions 12. Balance: Challenge Questions 13. Net Ionic Reactions for Precipitation Reactions 14. Predict Products: Decomposition Reactions 15. Predict Products: Single Replacement Reactions I (All react) 16. Predict Products: Single Replacement Reactions II (Some react, some don't) 17. Balance and Predict Nonmetal Replacement Reactions 18. Predict Products: Double Replacement Reactions (All react) 19. Predict Products: Precipitation Reactions (Some react, some don't) 20. Predict Products: Mixed Type Problems 3. How many pages does this unit contain? This unit contains 20 student pages plus an answer key for every page. 4. What will the format of each page be? Each page will be unique. Each is designed to roughly cover the material that I would teach in an hour long class period. These are terrific for daily homework assignments because they don’t take too long to complete. These pages have been carefully designed in Illustrator. I have created a unique set of questions to help students to review material taught in class and think deeper about the material. Many of the pages ask students to highlight or color something, to identify items in a diagram, to match related concepts, or interact with a topic in a new way. Many of the pages ask students to connect more than one concept; they are intended to help students see the bigger picture in each unit. A few pages ask students to use the internet to do a little research. If you own any of my other resources, don’t worry about repeat pages. These homework pages are truly unique and separate from my activities. These homework pages will truly complement any activities or resources you already have or use in your class. 5. How do I handle homework? First of all, I don’t grade it. I learned in my early teaching years that when I grade homework, I am rewarding students who copied off of their one studious friend the period before my class, and I am penalizing students who have limited educational time outside of school. I often give time at the end of the period to work on “homework” pages. Often, I start off the next day’s class with the answer key projected onto some sort of screen (ELMO or projector) so that students can check their answers as they walk in. My students know that they will do better in my class if they do the homework and I care about effort more than being correct. 6. What if you want to grade homework? Are answer keys included? Are they easy to grade? Answer keys are included (for almost all of the pages, where it makes sense to have an answer key). I designed these pages to be pretty simple to grade, if you want to do that. 7. Why is each homework page only one page? In my time as a teacher, I have noticed that for some reason, homework assignments that have more than one side of a page are just neglected by students. If I hand out a one sided homework page and tell them, here’s your homework, they say, yay, it’s just 1 page! They will often at least start it if not finish it before the end of the day. I really think there is a psychological barrier to starting an assignment with two sides. Call me crazy, but test it out! Try giving my homework assignments and watch your class actually do their homework! If you want to give two pages, you can print these out and then copy 2 back to back for your students. A way to save paper would be to print all of the homework assignments and copy them as a packet. This is great to give students all at once in the beginning of the unit, so they have every page in advance, which works great if they’re absent! It is almost time for Read Across America! Time for reading...and science! Time for Oobleck! This simple science activity is sure to get them excited about both! I am so thrilled to share one of my favorite lessons that works perfectly with my FOSS Solids and Liquids Unit. We spend a lot of time trying to add engaging activities to our school day and this one seems to really surprise and amaze my students. The book Oobleck is a fun Dr. Suess book that links science into your classroom! Fun with Non-Newtonian Fluids! Here is my hour long lesson plan... 1. We start with the characteristics of a solid and a liquid 2. I then share with them that today we are going to learn about something that acts like a liquid and a solid. I then share with them it is all because of King Derwin of Didd. I then share with them the book. It is a long book...but reading it and changing your voice keeps them engaged! 3. We then use the the Oobleck sheet that has them see how Oobleck acts...Is it a solid or liquid? 4. We continue our experiments with five objects that either sink or stay on the top. The students are amazed as to how it acts. 5. We wrap up by writing the recipe for Oobleck and understand a non-Newtonian fluid by filling in the blanks. 6. I they get done early I have them add to our classroom graph...Do You Like Oobleck? I have each table set up before they come in and they meet me at the carpet for the intro and book. This helps when my time is limited... You can find my OOBLECK TPT Pack Here!
Engage students while teaching them the difference between physical and chemical changes by integrating these 5 experiments into your unit.
Science Picture of the Day is a critical thinking activity where students practice analyzing, inferring, and observing real life science in photographs. Targeted skills include making observations and growing scientific vocabulary. The goal is for students to observe science in our everyday lives. These pictures each represent at least one branch of science – physical science, earth science, and life science – and can be utilized for nearly any topic of study in the science curriculum. Regardless of what grade level or content you are studying, students should be able to recognize many examples of science in all pictures. This meets the common core standards of RI.1 (Inference, Key Details and Informational Text) along with SL.2 and 4 (Key discussion and use of vocabulary). Furthermore, this open-ended activity is a great way to get your students to think deeper and more critically. I have provided an answer key for each picture prompt, but the science seen in these pictures are not limited to my answers, as there are many aspects of science in our daily lives. Be sure to have students justify their reasoning, and how deep you go with the science concepts is up to your discretion. File Type PDF (Acrobat) Document File in a ZIP file Be sure that you have an application to open this file type before downloading and/or purchasing.
