Today my students finished up their President's Day activities. I would have liked to do much more - but time didn't allow. I can't believ...
President's Day Activities This week we are studying President's day and we are celebrating George Washington and Abraham Lincoln's Birthdays. We started out with the movie Getting to know Abraham Lincoln (click below for a preview) and a song we also did a movement activity where we started out small and grew taller and taller like Abe Lincoln. Getting to know Abraham Lincoln Here is the Presidents Song we sang. Last week we also learned about Abraham Lincoln. We talked about how tall he was and I decided this would be a great estimating and measuring project. The first thing we did was have the kids all estimate how tall they thought Abraham Lincoln was. After that we measured how tall he actually was, and drew him paper. The kids were so excited to see how tall he was and wanted to see how tall they were in comparison. They got to lay down and we measured with the measuing feet. The kids counted the feet and inches on thier own and I recorded their answers. When all the kids got a chance we hung him up on the wall and even the teachers were able to record their heights! We made George Washington and Abraham Lincoln lapbooks to review all we learned about president's day. www.homeschoolshare.com We made George Washington and Abe Lincoln portraits for the covers of our lapbooks. The kids drew their own faces! I was impressed!! :) We made log cabins out of sticks. For snack I bet you can guess what we had....Log cabins!! We used a graham cracker for the base and cream cheese for the glue. A few of the kids used a small pretzel for the window! So creative! I have also done this with the pretzel rods and peanut butter. Our math activities this week are all about money math! We learned about the quarter and we counted by ones to 25 and counted by 5's to 25. Also we sorted money and made money patterns. The older kids did basic money adding and matching sets. (sorry I didn't take pictures of our math activities) For art we will make quarter and penny rubbings, Lincoln and Washington portraits, Cherry tree handprints with tissue paper cherries and cherry pie baking. For the cherry pie you just put cherry pie filling in a 9X13 pan and put bisquits on top of the pie filling. Dap the top with butter and bake at 350 for 20 min. I will post pictures later this week. On Wednesday we will do a science experiment with pennies. What liquid will clean a penny best?? Our languge lessons will be based around our first 25 sight words on president silloettes and the "ig" family as in wig. I am excited about the wig ideas I have this week, I have about 15 wigs I am bringing to school and the kids will get the opportunity to sort CVC words and if they rhyme with wig they will run and place them under their wig. The read aloud book we are reading this week is: Abe Lincoln at last We will finish the week by making powder wigs and acting out a president's day poem as I read it. Here is my February Pinterest Board for more President's day ideas! Kidzone Teacher Mama Feb Pinterest Board Like most Americans, I truely admire the integrity and hard work these great men have done for our country. They set a standard that is hard to come by these days. I think it is important to teach children about the high standards that were so important to these men. I want my children to have a good example to model. I hope you found some ideas you can use in your classroom or at home with your own kids.
I say Presidents' Day, you say Presidents Day...Let's call the whole thing off. Ok, we're not singing about tomatoes, but I'm not completely sure what the correct punctuation for this holiday is. I Googled it, and it's still not clear. I think Presidents' Day looks right. Once you get a look at all the goodies I created for you, I don't think you'll mind how I chose to punctuate. I put together a whole days worth of activities for this holiday. I've got Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies covered for you. I really appreciate all the kind words you guys have been sending my way and REALLY appreciate you following my blog. It's just like when you have students that are always saying thank you, it makes you want to do that much more for them. I hope you enjoy all the activities. You can click on any of the pictures or HERE to grab a complete and FREE copy of the entire unit. If you like what you see I would love it if you followed me, liked my fan page, and/or left me a comment. Either way, I wish you luck as you continue to create magic in your classroom! Social Studies Have students research Abraham Lincoln. Using the information they gather, have them make a biopoem. Once they have created the poem, they can type it into Tagxedo. Have them choose the Abraham Lincoln shape and print. It is so cool. If you don't know about Tagxedo, check out my post from last week, HERE. Writing Click HERE or on the book cover to get a free online video version of the book, So You Want to Be President. You will have to watch a commercial, but you can download using Zamzar. If you download, it will eliminate the commercial for you and you can save it to your flashdrive. Let me know if you need help with this. After reading the book, let students write a descriptive paragraph about what they would do if they were president. Math Let students stack pennies and find the mean, median, mode, and range. Your students will LOVE this! Reading Let students read the passage and complete the graphic organizer. Liz from Liz's Lesson created a great French and Spanish Presidents' Day packet. Click HERE or the picture to get this foreign language freebie. For another great activity, check out Diary of The Not So Wimpy Teacher's freebie.

Use these fun printables and activities to help your students celebrate Presidents' Day!
February is the one of those months that is just packed full of holiday greatness! I love incorporating all of the fun themes! Presidents' Day is coming up very soon and I wanted to plan some fun things that I knew my students would love! I teach kindergarten, but I have modified all of these presidential activities for first and second grades, too. We are focusing on identifying key ideas and details within the text, so that's what I decided to make the core comprehension skill in this unit. Add a few cute crafts and my favorite presidential books and we are all set! So, these are probably my top 5 Presidents' Day books. I have more that I use, but you can only fit so many in within a week. This year, I went with these for our upcoming study. I have ordered some better George Washington books this year. I have the Kindle version of them, but I think it's important to have the actual books so they aren't pictured. I love George Washington and the General's Dog by Frank Murphy and The First President by Baby Professor for kindergarten. The ones I had on hand were a little to long for them. We are doing our Presidents' Day unit the week of the holiday, so it's only a four-day week. I will have to cram two days into one. Day One will go pretty quickly so I will read this book as an intro and students will register to vote in our classroom election later in the week. This book is ADORABLE! If you don't have it, order it NOW from Scholastic. It's super cute! I can't wait to read My Teacher is President to my kindergarteners. We are going to use the key details about a teacher to also try to persuade others' to vote for me in the classroom election. I'll be going up against Duck, so I'll need all the help I can get! I also can't wait to see their depictions of me with this craft. Should be interesting... Duck will be the second candidate in our election for President. This book is just hysterical and never gets old. They will also be recording key details from the text and recording reasons to vote for Duck. This craft is just darling, and I know they will love it! The last time we made Duck at Christmas, they giggled throughout the entire thing. They were so excited when it was completed. I have already told you about the George Washington books that we will be using, but I will also be showing a BrainPop JR. video. I'll do the same with Abraham Lincoln. This book about Abe Lincoln's Hat is really good! I did not know all of the history about his famous hat until I read this story. It's very interesting and all of the accounts are true. It's a perfect book for identifying key ideas and details. I am a firm believer in keeping your graphic organizers consistent. Students will start internalizing these while reading if you use the same ones enough within a skill. I came up with this one for identifying details to start getting kids ready for main ideas and details, since that is such a huge skill! At the end of the unit, students will cast their vote for their teacher or for Duck. I made a new ballot box this year. It's just a shoe box wrapped in craft paper. I included templates for the letters and stars in the pack so you could make your own. I also tried to make the ballots very simple for our young voters. After students vote, instead of getting a sticker, they get to make these fun buttons! It's just paper, but they turned out so cute. I usually attach stuff to kids' shirts with a paper clip. But if you want to get fancy, you could hot glue one of those pins to the back of it. Here is everything that is included in the Presidents' Day ELA unit below. But I am also throwing in a FREEBIE for everyone! Keep scrolling! We need some practice during our word work time with a few previous skills, so I created a freebie no prep pack for that week. You can grab it below. I hope you have a great upcoming week! Thanks for stopping by! Wish me luck in our classroom election! ;)

So, here are a couple of things we're doing in First Grade this week to celebrate the old presidents. First, we read a couple of books about Lincoln and Washington and documented our learning (the kids LOVE this.) Lincoln’s Log Sorting Center This week I wanted to incorporate President's Day into my reading workshop, so I made this little center. President’s day theme? Lincoln’s cabins. The idea is pretty basic. Students sort “logs” onto Lincoln’s “cabins”. Once they fill a cabin up with logs, they’ve built it! (And, wowie-wow-wow are Firsties proud of themselves after they’ve “built” a cabin!! Ha!) Pre-Sorting Post Sorting Here are some example sorts. Compound Words V. Non-Compound Words Long E Words and Short E Words What I love about this center is the variety of sorts you can make to differentiate for different kiddos. I stuck to sound sorts when I made my cabins, but you can also make syllable sorts, type of speech sorts, computation sorts, even and odd number sorts, and all other kinds of sorts with this pattern. Want to make your own? Here’s how. First, print this pattern (click the pic to download). It is UGLY. But, I promise it will turn out okay.... Just trust me on this one :) I know it is ugly!!!!! See explanation below. (I was totally afraid to cutesy this pattern up in case I lost the sizing of the craft sticks. They were a TOTAL nightmare to trace! Hence the lack of loveliness...) To improve your cabins, I suggest adding some Cabin Bling. I just added a door and a window to mine because I am an underachiever, but that shouldn’t prevent you from going wild!!! You may also want to laminate your houses for durability. After you’ve made your houses, program craft sticks for whatever skill you want your kiddos to practice. Math, reading, whatever. You also want to create labels for the houses (e.g. “Long E Words”, “Short E Words”). To store this center, I put all of the sticks for each sort into a different labeled baggie. Then, I pull specific sorts for different kiddos who need work on different things. Or, when I’m feeling crazy, I just put out all of the baggies and the kids can sort whatever two groups they feel like. Before sorting the kids like to "shuffle" the sticks- translation: dump all of the sticks on the floor and swirl them around like there's no tomorrow. Then they get down to sorting business and once they’re done, the sorting sticks and labels go right back into the baggies. EASY! Storage President Mobile So I totally wish that I could take credit for this super cute idea, but I can’t. It was entirely the mind-child of my brilliant and adorable colleague, Mrs. Shackelford. My class hasn’t actually done this activity yet, but here’s how I plan on doing it. First, the kiddos are going to make their mobiles (glue a presidential silhouette to each side of a heart- EASY!!!!). Then, the kiddos will sort statements about each president onto to either side of their mobile, gluing them to the mobile tail. Simple and cute. And who can’t use a little simplicity in their life?! Here's what it looks like when it's done (one pic of each side). Any big plans for the Presidential Weekend? I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I plan on catching some zzz’s. (Can you tell my mind is already on the weekend!?!?!?!) Have a FABULOUS Wednesday! Mrs. Thiessen

Because of our Monday holiday for President's Day we really had a lot to squeeze in this past week. We still had a lot of fun talking all week about the letter "P" and "Our Country". To be perfectly honest, "P" is one of my favorite letter. So fun! We spent the entire week making "puckering faces" and making the fun "P" sound (being careful mind you not to spit!). We started Tuesday by talking about good 'ole George Washington since it was the 22nd of February and that IS his birthday. There is nothing that gets a group of children to pay attention like bringing an axe to school. Okay, don't panic, it wasn't a real ax, it was made of paper and we pretended to chop down a tree! I really think the lesson of telling the truth sunk in. The children talked about it all day. Lots and lots of fun! We spent our day making the American Flag While Mrs. Nancy's class made good 'ole George Washington I've never seen George look so good! Wednesday was a fun day talking about the letter "P". I wanted an attention grabber for "P" so we made a "Pink Penguin with Purple Polka Dots Sitting on a Pink Piece of Paper" (try saying that 10 times really fast). Everyone walked around all day saying our fun "P" phrase, it got wild, but it also was fun! Please note the adorable eyes on our projects. I splurged years ago and bought 2 different size punches from a local craft store. I love to watch the children attached the eyes to their projects. A good way to work on those fine motor skills and we save money not buying little goggle eyes too. Thursday was all about Abraham Lincoln! What a guy! We loved talking about his big tall hat. I guess you noticed that our log cabins weren't made out of the traditional craft sticks. I wanted to use them but we ran out. We made a little adjustment and use some left over strips of brown paper. I like the way it looks, don't you? Friday was the day we had all wait on! Our grand finale to "P" Week, our annual "Pajama Party"!! What a great day. We all wore our pajamas to school, although several of the boys weren't too sure about it. We also ate pizza for lunch with pretzels and fruit punch. For desert we all enjoyed popsicles and then headed to the big music room for a pajama party complete with a movie AND popcorn! What a great day! Now I face my annual problem . . . how to make "Q" and farm week fun after all of that?
We've been talking about presidents for a few days in preparation for President's Day. I have to be honest about something: I didn't know Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president! I kept telling Sweet P he was the 5th until my mom said "He is NOT the 5th President" and rattled off the first 10. I guess because he is on the $5 bill I thought he was number 5! Silly me. In addition to our activities, we watched The President! and President's Day 2012: Washington to Obama videos on YouTube. Here are our trays from today: These are President cards I picked up at Target's $1 Spot in the fall. I picked out George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama to show her. There are facts on the back, but we just looked at the pictures. She picked up the Obama card and the Washington card and drew them on her dry erase board. Build a Log Cabin: We got this idea from Carrots are Orange and Sweet P had a great time with it! I filled a small bowl with water glue (a mixture of water and glue) and she used a paint brush to brush the glue onto the page. I numbered the sticks and she glued them down in numerical order. We talked about triangles and rectangles as she glued on the door and chimney. Sweet P loved the door and said "Someone is going to come out!" George Washington Cotton ball Wig: I printed this color sheet from Twisted Noodle on card stock, cut around his head and glued the card stock to a piece of black construction paper. She used a paintbrush and water glue to glue the cotton balls onto the paper as George Washington's hair. We both thought this was so funny and when she was finished she announced "He has pigtails!" She asked to color his shirt so we got out markers. Pink polka dots of course! She also colored one eye pink. Wonder if they had pink eye back then! Washing and sorting coins: The small boxes held pennies and quarters since we were talking about Abe Lincoln and George Washington. Sweet P spread out the towel on her table and then brought the water bowl over without the tray to avoid spilling. We added another towel to dry the coins and a bowl of just water (the glass bowl had dish soap in it). After she tired of washing the coins (she wasn't super interested in brushing them), she wanted to do water transfer so I brought her a little lid (it's a Gatorade lid). Sorting: After she was finished with the washing and water play, she dried them off and sorted them back into the quarter and penny boxes. Making a Pizza: This doesn't have anything to do with President's Day, but when she was done playing with trays she wanted to play with her grocery store. Then she told me she went home to make lunch. What did she make for lunch? A big pizza, of course! It was fun to dump it all out, but she wasn't thrilled about picking it all up! Cleaning up was a great sorting activity, though she dumped out so many different containers. Like The Iowa Farmer's Wife on Facebook! Linking to:
