When I left the Vegas conference I was filled with excitement and a driving force behind how I can begin to find my new voice for this blog. Leaving the classroom for administration has changed my focus and I want to share with you some of the things I am doing with my staff. I want to give a BIG shout out to the very lovely Mrs. Spangler from Mrs. Spangler In the Middle- I was lucky enough to sit next to her at one of the TpT conference sessions and we talked about what I could offer the blogging world now that I am not a middle school teacher anymore. This post was one of those ideas :) THANKS Lisa! So imagine sitting in your classroom ..you prepared a ROCKIN' lesson. Everything is falling into place and you know you are in the ZONE. From the corner of your eye you see the beginnings of crazy town starting to surface in the back of the room. Little Suzie is about to loose it.... Maybe it starts with a sigh or a yell, then it begins to bubble over the yell is a scream ... maybe a cry. What do you do?!?! First know that you are not alone! I think every teacher can relate to that scenario and the panic that sets in when you know a student is about to burst and they are escalating rapidly. When I did this PD with my staff we started with a post it activity. In order to handle that child we first need to look inward. We need to figure out are our buttons ...and what pushes them! They needed to answer these three questions .... Each teacher was asked to write down all the behaviors that PUSH their buttons and post them. We are human and behaviors will irritate us! But what pushes my buttons isn't necessarily what pushes the teachers down the hall's buttons. The physical act of writing down what aggravated me is very powerful. Then they needed to write how it makes them feel. This step helps label the emotion...when you do this.... I feel .... As teachers we are not supposed to feel negative emotions....YA RIGHT! That little angel who comes every day and pinches or yells or rolls their eyes at you will elicit an emotion from you and its ok that those behaviors aggravate you. However while the behavior may enrage you we all know that those emotions are productive. They wont lead us to an end result that allows everyone in the room to continue in the learning process. So now I am more aware of what behaviors are my "buttons" ... and we identified how they make me feel ... The last step is identifying how these behaviors will impact the relationships I am building in my classroom. As we got to this phase the post-its it was clear... If I react with that emotion I will not be building any sort of quality relationship with my students. Not only that, if we live in those emotions and react from those emotions it will take a toll on our health and well being. So now that I am more aware of MYSELF... how do I deal with those behaviors?!?! Here are 5 ways to DEESCALTE ... I will be revisiting this topic and giving more ideas and tips for behavior interventions!! I would love to hear feedback on this topic and if more posts on behavior would be helpful so feel free to leave a comment if these strategies are beneficial!! :)

I was invited to come to Midland and do a Watercolor, Woven painting demo. Most of the time, If I am going to weave a painting, it is usually because I am not real happy with the painting, and this just adds some fun texture. Feel free to download the drawing and try it for yourself! The drawing is done from the painting below it. It is the original I did years ago and nobody wanted it, so I got it out, and traced another one same size. I knew I had done this spraying it and splattering it, so I drew off 2 (saving the old original for demo). I painted two quickly, using my spray bottle, splattering some as I went. I tried to paint one light and one dark. or yellow and orange and red, but making sure the colors were NOT the same. You can tell by looking at the bottom photo where the flowers are different values. You can use your own painting if want. If you do, please send me what you do! I would love to see it. Even if you use mine. You don't have to spend a lot of time, and try to do a lot of detail. Original OLD ugly painting 2 paintings woven together After getting two painted, cut one in strips, different sizes vertically, leaving attached at the top. You can tape it or clip it to a board. You can use scissors or a rotary cutter. (I used scissors since they were handy, and the painting was small (1/8th sheet) After cutting the first one vertically..(You can see I didn't cut all the way through) then cut the 2nd one horizontally. different widths, etc. (don't' worry about straight) then start weaving back and forth like you did in kindergarten, When we made placemats, You will have to leave some pieces out, to make the flowers and stems match up. (I just lay the next strip on top to see if it matches, if not, I lay it aside and cut another one. You have to keep them scooted together tight, and when you finish, turn it over and use masking tape and tape around the edges, so it wont' come undone. You can do any painting this way! It is fun, and gives it a different look. You can not love it too much to cut it up.. If you do, paint something else. This just gives it a different look, almost abstract look to it. The Demo is April 9th in Midland, at the Palette Club. I may do this flower, or decide to do something different. I am thinking I need to enlarge this one so that it will show up more as I demo.

Hello Everyone! What a great day to start a study on clouds!! Dark clouds this morning releasing a deluge of rain! By 1:00 beautiful clear sky with just a few cirrus clouds! Perfect example of our ever changing skies. I'll share our Cloud Unit in a second, but first I wanted to show some pics of our whole group math lesson. We are continuing our study of place value. After all the activities we did last week, it was time to see how all of this fits in relationship to other numbers. I pulled out our bigger than life 100 board and handed out some mystery picture clues. Each clue described a number in place value (tens and ones). The kids took turns putting their cards on the number for which their clue stood. When we finished putting all the clues down, a cloud was revealed! Use your imagination! It looks like a cloud, right??? The kids loved working together to create it!! I'm not even sure they realized they were growing their number sense!!! I did put together a little integrated cloud unit. We are going to try to get most of this in this week!! The unit also includes some poetry, another science activity and more!! You can get it if you click HERE!! Stay tuned for more cloud fun later in the week! Until then, have a wonderful week!! Thanks for stopping by for a peek!! Joyfully! Nancy
Pin It Since school started yesterday we wanted to do an activity today that was laid back and low key so that the girls could relax and visit about the new school year and share what's going on with their lives. I made each girl a jar of foot scrub. The Quote on the jar is to remind them that as this school year begins they should reflect on their lives and make some goals to keep them on the right path. I printed out the tags found HERE onto tan (or maybe it's taupe) paper and puched them out with a 2 inch circle punch. I cut out the white scalloped circle on my Cricut cutter using the Sugar and Spice Cartridge. (I used "real dial size 2 1/2") You could use a 2 1/2" Scallop punch if you dont have a Cricut or you can glue the circle to white paper and cut around the circle with a pair of scalloped sissors. I attached the tag to a jar using pink ribbon adding a Baskin Robbin's sample spoon as I tied. I got these jars at Hobby Lobby. They are regularly $1.99, but all glass was on sale the day I bought them and I got them at 50% off. Here is the foot scrub recipe: 1 cup of packed brown Sugar 1/2 cup Mineral oil or vegatable oil 2 teaspoons Almond extract 2 capsules vitamin E (Opt) Mix all ingredients. I used the cheap stuff. (I actually used my already opened brown sugar that was kind of hard, we're putting this on our feet after all.) I mixed the ingredients with my hands and boy were my hands soft afterwards. :) When it's mixed just put it in an air tight container and it's ready to go! I hope they like it! Come back soon,
