We are SURVIVOR fans at my house. Big-time fans. So when it came time to decide on a theme for what was supposed to be a surprise party for Jason's thirty-fifth birthday, the choice became pretty obvious. We would hold a SURVIVOR competition for couples. It was AWESOME! I believe that attention to the details contributed to making the party a success. So, here are the details: I found a great image of the SURVIVOR logo with a google search, and I used that on just about everything. The invitation had actual quotes from Jeff Probst's opening monologue with slight moderation (two hours, eighteen people, one SURVIVOR). They, along with a survey used for one of the challenges, were printed on postal packaging paper that I cut to fit through the printer. All edges of the papers were burned and they were tied up with jute. The invitations and surveys were delivered with a bandana that represented the tribal buff. I randomly drew names to divide all the party guests into the two tribes- Ulang and Tahun. The tribe names were chosen by typing the word "birthday" in google translator and converting it to Indonesian (the most exotic language available). To create the image on the flag, I ironed web interfacing to the back of the fabrics to make cutting out the pattern easier, used a print off of the logo as a template, and hot-glued everything together. I then sewed the logo onto each flag. Each flag was fastened to a pole so tribe members could carry them around easily (although we never really did). The game supplies were some of the most fun things to put together. They really added to the whole experience. Here are some explanations for each item pictured: 1- I found this incense burner at Wal-Mart for $10.00. A bit of a splurge, but isn't it awesome! 2- I saved this plastic container that had Christmas candies in it and wrapped it with fabric rope, some jute, and freshly cut bush branches and, voila! A vote collection urn. 3- I needed five dry erase boards for one of the games, but good heavens! They are expensive. So I took some foam board that I already had and glued cardstock on both sides. I cut a sheet protector to fit over one of the sides, hot-glued it down, and wrapped and hot-glued jute around the edges for a finishing touch. And because I seemed to be on a wrap-it-in-jute mood, I did the same with the five dry erase markers. 4- Fabric bags were quickly sewn and jute was used for drawstrings. These were used in a final immunity challenge where the bags were tied in various locations on the playground of the park. Contestants had to collect all four bags which contained pieces to a puzzle they had to put together. 5- It just so happened that I had these necklaces in my costume jewelry collection. The larger one was used as the main individual immunity necklace and the one pictured above it was used only once for a challenge. The challenge was to search the park to find the "hidden immunity necklace." 6- I wrapped a huge Sharpie marker just like the collection urn, and the papers for voting were cardstock with torn edges. 7- Of course, we had to have a new set of buffs for when the two tribes merged! 8- I hot-glued scraps of fabric onto wooden skewers to create the small flags that would easily be stuck in the ground for one of the challenges. Not pictured were the two tiki torches purchased for use in tribal councils. I know. Describing the game supplies was probably more information than anyone needed to know! Here is the birthday cake. I don't think it turned out too shabby considering it was my first attempt at making and using my own marshmallow fondant. I was pleased with the final result. And now, here are some pictures of the evening and actual SURVIVOR competition: Darren of Tribe Tahun writing his vote at Tribal Council Tahun with a slight lead over Ulang This one kills me. Three members from each tribe were blindfolded and guided by a caller to go out on the field and retrieve several tribal flags. Never mind that there were trees everywhere. These competitive men went running into the playing field at full speed! Ulang members waiting for their turn to vote at Tribal Council Clair of Ulang takes on Jason of Tahun in a test of balance The gross food challenge where competitors had to see who could eat a Twinkie the fastest Darren polished his Twinkie off quickly, while Doug (in the middle bending over) nearly choked on his Jason came so close to winning the final immunity challenge. He collected all his bags first and put the puzzle together fastest but left one piece in a bag. Doug came from behind to win immunity, and voted Jason off because he didn't think he could convince a jury to choose him over a birthday boy. He was probably right. After Jerimiah and Doug were "grilled" by the jury members, the votes were cast and Doug won by only two votes. He was presented with his million dollars (in the form of ten 100 Grand candy bars) and named sole SURVIVOR. Paige decided she wanted a Survivor themed birthday party. This one took quite a bit of preparation before the party, but the girls had a really good time. I even made a custom logo that we used on the invitations and also the tribe buffs. Here's Paige at the start of the party - wearing her "buff" and holding our tiki man voting container (old formula can covered with paper mache and painted). As the girls arrived, they drew their buffs (which determined which tribe they were on) and then they went to their tribe 'camp' and worked on their tribe flags, tribe name, and mascot. We had two tribes - the green tribe became the Polka Dotted Panthers: And the blue tribe was the Shaba-Laba-Ding-Dongs and their lovely mascot had a cheetah front end and a zebra read end :-) Then we got started on the challenges. For the first challenge, each team designated a 'caller' who stood on their tribe mat and directed teams of two that were tied together at the wrist and blindfolded out into the yard to find bags of puzzle pieces. They had to bring each bag back to the mat separately and the caller had to direct both sets of tribemates at the same time - by yelling at them which direction to go. Once they retrieved all three bags full of puzzle pieces, they had to untie the bags that were knotted really well and then assemble their puzzles... After that was our very first Tribal Council, where the girls from the winning tribe all voted for who they thought did the best in the challenge. There was no 'voting off the island' in Birthday Survivor :-) The next challenge was the infamous food challenge. The girls went head to head against the other tribe with mystery ingredients. First girl to finish her portion and stick our her tongue showing an empty mouth earned a point for her tribe. I figured I couldn't get away with anything too gross so it was all standard grocery-store fare: pimento stuffed olives, sauerkraut (pictured above), potted meat, baby food peas, and sardines. We ended up with a tie, so the tiebreaker was Wasabi Peas - each person had to eat two and the tribe that finished first won. The next challenge was an endurance competition. Who can stand on one leg on a brick the longest? After two minutes, they had to put their hands on top of their heads... after another two minutes they had to lift their non-standing leg out in front of them, etc. The next challenge involved two balance beams with a large bucket of water at one end and two empty containers at the other end. The girls had to walk across the beam and collect water through whatever means possible... mouth, hands, hair, buff... and then return across the balance beam and deposit the water in their tribe's container. Once they made it across the next tribemate went. If someone fell off the beam in the middle, they had to start over. First tribe to fill their container won. There were a couple more challenges, including the typical Survivor auction, but not as many pictures were taken. We headed inside where Paige had a Tiki Man cake: Then we opened presents, the girls played for a little while, and then they camped out in a tent in the backyard. A good time was had by all, but we all got very little sleep. In the morning I made muffins and sent them on their way! Happy 11th Birthday Paige!
I love that all the challenges focused on team work!

Everyone knows the show Wipeout, right? My boys and The Hubby LOVE to watch it every summer. While thinking about plans for my older boy's birthday party - Wipeout came to mind. It was a done deal. Unfortunately, we learned this summer that Wipeout Season 8 had been canceled - the entire family was quite bummed to hear this news! Wipeout Run is always an option for super die-hard fans - and those willing to take on the challenge! The Bestie is on a team to participate this fall in Southern California - I can't wait to see pictures! Back to the party - for the past couple of years now, my older boy has really gotten into the party planning process with me. We started with the cake, he loves watching the contestants on The Big Red Balls so a lot of our ideas stemmed from that, starting with the cake. For the cake, he chose Betty Crocker's Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake - a steer from his normal red velvet - but he is a HUGE fan of chocolate and he loved every bite. We stuck with a Classic Vanilla Creamy Home-Style Frosting from Duncan Hines and colored it. After looking through the choices of Wilton Icing Colors in the pantry, we started with Teal and then added just enough Royal Blue to get the Wipeout Water he wanted. {I have two boys. I have several shades of blue icing colors on hand at any given time.} We used red ping pong balls that were glued to straws, vanilla creme wafers covered with leftover frosting that I tinted a darker blue made the platform, and Crafted by Kiki made the "finish line" #9 sign for me. All designed by my son. He even added the piles of white sprinkles to reflect the mounds of bubbles you see in the Wipeout Water on the show! For the invitations, we purchased these from M3AndCo on Etsy - then printed and cut them ourselves. The party was at 11:00 a.m. so decided to serve snacks and lunch. He wanted to serve Crockpot Chicken Tacos along with chips, salsa, and guacamole. But for the fun stuff? We decided to use Pretzel Rods to represent the Wipeout "Sweeper Bars" alongside a platter of Nutella as a "Mud Pit" for dipping. He confirmed that there would be a spoon in the Nutella to ensure we didn't have any "double dipping". We also served "Big Red Balls" a.k.a. cherry sour balls. You'll also see these at the base of the cake! My son really thought the "Pool Water" was pretty cool at his little brother's Birthday Pool Party earlier this summer - so we did the same only calling it "Wipeout Water" instead. I did some local shopping and purchased four red 36" balloons from the TomKat Studio Shop - these were awesome! When I had them inflated, I asked for the "hi float" in the balloons and am expecting these to decorate our house for awhile! These were tied down behind the food and cake table, but because of the window being behind them, the photo doesn't do them justice! The kids LOVED them while the dog barked at them. My son designed the obstacle course, drew everything out in a notebook for me, and made the list of supplies we'd need. Some of this was very make-shift but it worked perfectly! The contestants first had to maneuver through two adults (which later became other kids!) swinging noodles at them {not shown here}, then step through small intertubes. Next, hurdle over 3 noodles taped down to buckets - oh, and The Hubby decided to spray them with the hose as they went through this. Then into the Water Wheel to get across the pool. The idea was to use it like a hamster wheel - but then we decided to have them dive into it and get across the pool that way as no one was succeeding the other way! Once on the other side of the yard, they had to cross over a baby pool while being sprayed with water guns and last but not least, leapfrog over the "big red balls" - these awesome 36" red beach balls were the perfect find for me from Beachballs.com. For the party favors? That was a slam dunk - red playground balls of course! Everyone had a great time - my son chose a small trophy for the winner of the competition, and ended up taking home 1st place himself!

Survivor Theme Party Game Challenges I racked my brain and turned to the Internet for ideas. I scoured the Internet looking for games to purchase. I came up empty-handed. So, I knew that I was on my own and each would have to be created by myself. Here is my challenge listing, the rules, and way I plan on setting everything up. Challenge Board & Score Board First, I needed a way to keep me on task and a way for our guests to see the upcoming challenges. I found our over-sized dry erase board in the basement and decided this would
