Dive into Norse Mythology with StoryboardThat's lesson plans, activities, and myth retellings for immersive learning and student exploration of ancient tales.
Norse mythology Guess Who! is a great addition to any study of Norse mythology or Viking history. The game board and cards feature 24 Norse gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures. Game cards feature a short statement about their character. Play this game to learn the name of important characters in Norse mythology, or bring the cards out at the end of the unit as a review! There are various spellings for the beings in Norse mythology. I have chosen to match my spellings to D'Aulaire's Book of Norse Myths. Some of the animals featured in my cards are not named in the book and so then I have picked what seems to be a popular spelling. *IMPORTANT* The game cards have been created to fit this version of the Guess Who game, this is a digital download that does not include physical game boards. https://amzn.to/3suzG5Z Enjoy!

Design a Viking Norse sword with runes as a rune master! These runes are Elder Futhark runes, an early alphabet of the Vikings or Norse people. The activity page features background information about Norse beliefs of how runes were magical and ways they were used historically. Students compose a message and translate it into the runic alphabet and decorate their sword with them. If students translate the title on their paper into English from the runes, it reads "Rune Master." You will notice some English alphabet letters are not represented as runes on the page- that is because those sounds are not represented in Elder Futhark so there are no corresponding runes. Students are instructed to either leave out those letters or substitute a different rune for those missing letters if they are needed. This activity can be used in conjunction with history of Vikings and Norse people, early exploration of Vikings and Leif Eriksson, Norse mythology, a literature unit study of Beowulf, or with Anglo-Saxon history. Here is a beautiful little toy that you can make out of things that you probably already have in your house: We have given these as birthday gifts a few times, and they work very well for 4 to 6 year olds. We put them in a special pouch with 6 arrows, and we use fine point pens to decorate the bow with the child's name. They require some practice and fine motor coordination. Contrary to what you saw in that last menacing picture, in our house there is a no-shooting-in-the-direction-of-people-or-pets rule. Take care, they can shoot a surprising 15-20 feet!
