Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis A “sparkling social history” that brings the twilight of the Edwardian era to life (Entertainment Weekly). The Perfect Summer chronicles a glorious English summer just over a century ago, when the world was on the cusp of irrevocable change. That summer of 1911, a new king was crowned and the aristocracy was at play, bounding from one house party to the next. But perfection was not for all. Cracks in the social fabric were showing. The country was brought to a standstill by industrial strikes. Temperatures rose steadily to more than 100 degrees; by August, deaths from heatstroke were too many for newspapers to report. Drawing on material from intimate and rarely seen sources and narrated from the viewpoints of a series of exceptional individuals—among them a debutante, a choirboy, a politician, a trade unionist, a butler, and the queen—The Perfect Summer is a vividly rendered glimpse of a bygone time and place. “Brimming with delectable information and little-known facts . . . manages to describe every stratum of English society . . . Where Nicolson is especially good, however, is with the royals and the aristocracy, whose country estates, salons, entertainments, and affairs—discreet and indiscreet—she describes with accuracy and humor.” —The Providence Journal “A hugely interesting portrait of a society teetering on a precipice both nationally and internationally . . . As page turning as a novel.” —Joanna Trollope

Houses in Paris, Place Ravignan Item # 2475738 Juan Gris Jose Victoriano Gonzalez-Perez, better known as Juan Gris, was a Spanish painter and sculptor. His works are closely connected to the emergence of an innovative artistic genre: Cubism. This study for an oil painting of the same title (Houses in Paris, Place Ravignan?(1911 or 1912, The Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection) shows how precisely Gris mapped out his composition, from the prominent diagonal axis to the areas of white highlight. The setting is the place Ravignan in Paris, the site of Gris's studio. Fernande Olivier recalled that the little square is shaded by four trees and surrounded by four buildings with four streets leading into it. It's like the heart of a primitive cross... There are two nice old painted wood benches, though the paint is peeling off them, and in summer it's pleasant to sit here and collect your thoughts... In winter ... it's as slippery as an ice rink and the square is deserted. Elevate any room with our handcrafted stretched canvas gallery wraps.

It was in the early 1800s that people began to flock to the beaches for seaside amusement. With the introduction of railroads, ocean-side beaches became even more popular for sunny recreations. Along with this new outdoor pastime came the need for a stylish garment for the privileged lady of fashion. By the end of the 19th century people were flocking to the oceanside beaches for popular seaside activities such as swimming, surf bathing, and diving. The clumsy Victorian-style bathing costumes were becoming burdensome. A need for a new style bathing suits that retained modesty but was free enough to allow the young lady to engage in swimming was obvious. By 1910 bathing suits no longer camouflaged the contours of the female body. The yards of fabric used in Victorian bathing skirts and bloomers were reduced to show a little more of the figure and to allow for exposure to the sun. Up until the first decades of the 20th century, the only activity for women in the ocean involved jumping through the waves while holding on to a rope attached to an off-shore bouy. By 1915, women athletes started to share the actual sport of swimming with men and thus began to reduce the amount of heavy fabric used in their billowing swimsuits. Here we collected some interesting vintage pictures of swimwear fashion from the early 20th century: Annette Kellerman, c. 1903 - 1913.
