Ready for a fairy tale to come true? Appearing as though they've been sprinkled with pixie dust, these 10 storybook homes are on the market right now.
When crisp, clean lines and 20s'-era charm collide.
It seems the older I got, the more I found myself dreaming of one day living in a fairytale cottage. Could it have been all those fairytales books I read growing up? Did I see a few too many Disney movies over the years? Or, could it just be the hectic pace of everyday life that has me fantasizing about life in a storybook house. What little girl wouldn’t love a charming Victorian abode? Its peaked roofs and tiny porch evoke the essence of fairy tales. We bought our home in 1997 for $40,000 dollars. Not much to look at, but I loved the old charm and it had good "bones".It actually was one of the first built in our village.Yes...I said village...I guess that makes me a "Village People.Ha Ha." Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale. I truly am blessed. Me living in a real-life fairytale cottage. I always told myself I would have something blooming in the window boxes and pies baking in the oven. I Would never ever ever run out of lemonade. The entire house was painted with Pratt and Lambert paint in hues of rich ,warm, fall colors. Closeup of gingerbread peaks before being installed.Painted in a rich burgundy and gilded in 24 KT. gold leaf!! Cottages houses have been romanticized since the early fairy tales of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel and have a way of infinitely reminding us of gingerbread houses, and cookies, and sugar! I was always fascinated by the cottages and whimsical buildings and homes in Carmel-California, still am. There's no where else quite like it on earth.Carmel’s cottage living is full of traditional cottage elements, such as the arched Dutch door where the top half can be opened while the bottom half stays closed, the use of decorative, artisan-crafted objects as well as window boxes, shutters, stone walkways and wonderful plantings – I simply love these houses, they are truly adorable. Here are some examples... Even if you can’t buy a fairytale cottage by the sea, I believe you can create a seaside lifestyle wherever you are. That is what I love about dreaming. It gives you inspiration and ideas to bring back to reality. You imagine a life you want and you make it happen with what you have. You get creative. It isn’t always about buying perfection, it is about LIVING the way you really want to, wherever you are. You can create a seaside cottage in the most humble of houses in any neighborhood. I did, and while it may not be everyone's dream home...I feel like the princess of my castle. This is a picture of my not so pretty cottage before renovations. Before After Happy. Warmth. Attitude. A flamboyant color that's often tied to fun and happiness, orange exudes energy and warmth. It has the power to inspire people both mentally and emotionally to get them thinking and talking. And while associated with change, ambition and attitude, orange is an exciting color that attracts attention. Installing weather vane and lightning rods painted birdhouse Succulent window boxes...cause I hate to water!! The back deck all made from recycled or curb finds...even the grill and refrigerator! The small fence is for my grand daughter who is just crawling. Made from recycled garden edging and old ladders. My version of a playpen and she LOVES it! Garden edging is used for my backsplash, and counters are recycled wood painted and epoxycoated for durability. Window crown Backyard pond Even a mailbox can be the most whimsical appealing structure, even if we don't have a mailman. I keep gardening tools in it. Life is always good when we can escape to the comforts of our home, the coziness and serenity that awaits us inside. There is a secret garden surrounding my storybook house. You will have to know the secret password to get past the guard. Rumor has it she can be bribed with cheese. ;-) My cottage is full of chandeliers, columns, carvings, chimney pieces, Victorian millwork, porch posts, ornate railings and doors. There are unique door knobs, doorbells and other hardware, fireplace mantels, overmantels, mirrors, leaded and stained glass, old style tubs, sinks, sink fixtures, stoves, and statuary. The icing on this cake is a copper roof with weather vane and glass globe lghtning rods. Gingerbread peaks gilded in 24 KT Gold. Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be. ~ Grandma Moses

European Tudor This fine home was built in 1920 in the North Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. It was recently updated. I love the color scheme of the outside of the house including the blue front door. A wonderful flagstone walk welcomes you. Inside it's decorated in fun colors and whimsical touches. What do you think of those lime green curtains? Very pretty kitchen. I think that is birds on the back splash. That is weird. I love all the windows in this house. I embraced the lime curtains but these curtains....mmmm...no...I don't care for them. Birds flying overhead in the stairway are charming. I'd love to see the bathrooms in this house and all the other rooms. But alas, this is all they showed. I love the view of the backyard through the quaint gate. See the full listing here. Tweet

I adore the retro kitchens in the cottages at the Carmel Cottage Inn -- four different colors of checkerboard floors, strap hinges, and more great details!
The area under the stairs is often wasted space and there are so many ways to maximize this space to make it functional and inviting.
We all know the saying about the importance of first impressions. Our homes, like ourselves speaks volumes about who we are. If you were to pull into my driveway at the moment, you might think I am lazy.......weeds, drooping plants and yes I am a Landscape Designer .................. maybe you might think an overly busy Landscape Designer. Your initial image is lasting. The presence of a gate, to me, is an enticement, a lovely bit of ornamentation. And of course the other intent is additionally loud and clear. But today's post is about the beautiful first impression you can create. Last February I was in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California for a biz conference. Stolen time was a drive-through this fairy tail community. Consider the placement............a no-nonsense stride to the front door Think about the effect. No this is not derelict but a local style of the community adding to it's charm and casual lifestyle Think of the style and it complementing and enhancing the architectural style of your home. Hints of adobe make this gate and fence appropriate. My personal favorite for many reasons; The overhead arbor makes the gate very important Love a double gate The weathered wood blends with the homes colors AND LOOK AT THAT MAILBOX!! Live on a busy road? Or in the case of this town.........gawking tourists? Have something to say? Look closely, inside the gate and arbor The mystery of what beauty this gate contains A rustic mix of materials and styles; the gate remains special with stone sentinels supporting it. The wood carries on but in a different pattern. Not necessarily a means of securing the property but as an element of charm for artistic expression Love it, but when it speaks to me it says.............."no surface unadorned" and that would be carried forth indoors, no doubt with good taste and a specific theme This could go two ways, as is in the rustic style of the town, not particularly calling attention to itself. Or a classic white picket gate and fence mirroring the trim and style SPANISH! Loud and clear.........vintage sun bleached door with stone and stucco. The home has underlying tones of Tudor but who am I to judge :-) Pure cottage..............the rounded undulating form of the stone wall, the wood fence capping and arbor perfectly mirror elements of this home Enticing! Stone and iron............notice the curving path beyond. Curves say to me "slow down and enjoy". Also take note of the stone backdrop which highlights the gate. SHEER PERFECTION! Don't you agree? What I see that is so spot on; -the stone adds weight, all iron would disappear otherwise. It's colorways compliment the roof -the iron is a taupe/gray that blends. Take particular notice of the subtle arch in the fence, repeating the Tudor timbering on the house -the separation of the "street garden" and the "interior garden" -the personalization..........see below And..........the sense of humor. I want to know these people! Formal and curvy and subtly French A nod to it's Spanish Architecture The same stone as the house is carried forward creating the illusion of a more expansive home. The gate color is repeated on the house trim "Look" but do not enter................ An artistic whimsical mindset...........a conformist does not reside here. What about a set of gates for the drive? This would be my absolute favorite............ -The gates repeat the style and materials -Maybe they are always left open..........the effect is so good -The planted drive -The enticement of the "long view" and what lies beyond The gates and the fencing need not match Repetition of the garage door lines...............and........if one material is good (wood), two or three are better (stone and stucco). Lastly a moment of shameless self-promotion. Back in Illinois..............this is one of my landscape clients' home with their free standing gate. Here is what we were attempting to achieve; -Bring the garden "out" towards the street with repeated architectural elements -The concrete posts are from my friend and artist Richard Taylor -The gate is custom made by a local iron worker -The gates do not function.............purely ornamental -When the Hydrangea's mature and bloom the gate will stand out with the flora behind it -WINTER INTEREST..........mandatory in Illinois. Do you have a gate, want a gate? If you need help in deciding style and color send a photo of the front of your home, we can all learn about the process together. My husband and I had bought a ranch style home 11 years ago and turned into a photography studio....We decided to sell it and I had to stage it to look more like a home... In one of the bedrooms I placed a screen behind this chair to add some interest.....I love this antique hand painted screen...its so pretty! This is the kitchen...I know it looks like this bread board is floating in space...but its on a glass table that has columns. I'm going to keeping the pine cabinet in the back for my office. This room was an office and I had to make it look like it was a family room... I took my old blue sofa and made it back into a family room....that's a painting I had painted years ago! This is the living room...I love this chair! We kept my husbands portraits hanging on the wall. We sold it within 6 weeks with 4 offers....the couple who bought it wants to buy everything in it...including the accessories! My hubby will be opening his new studio in Westlake Village which will be only 20 minutes from home. Thanks for stopping by.. Julie

I am super fascinated by the archaic features and fixtures of midcentury houses…. Things that have been superseded by something more modern, or which simply faded from fashion. Quick! We better get them on the blog fast, so’s we don’t forget them. Stuff like hudee rings, and push-button plumbing, and appliance centers, and today: Dovecotes…
From storybook homes to grand manors, the Tudor style will capture your imagination.
This impressive European home plan exudes Old World charm with its steeply pitched roof and wood trim over stucco. Wood beams top the kitchen and breakfast nook and the two-story great room has a wall of windows that flood the room with light. Use bedroom 4 as a study or guest bedroom with its attached bath. The master suite is on the opposite side of the home, tucked in the rear for quiet and privacy. A spacious master bath is the reward for hard-working homeowners! An open rail balcony on the upper floor overlooks the great room below, for a dramatic effect. Both bedrooms on this level are comfortably large and share a big Jack and Jill bathroom. Future rec space can be finished to your liking.
