Sheri's quilt took longer than planned: I always forget how long it takes to do lots of SID and background quilting. (Picking out stitches added time too) Sheri spent a lot of time on it too, and said she put in plenty of time ripping out seams and resewing. Her top was nice and square and she took the time to serge the edge which I really appreciate. It turned out pretty, front and back.

This quilt I made for my daughter Leanne, about 4 years ago, when she was staying behind in Singapore to finish her high school. We moved to Vietnam, Saigon, for my husband's work, and she could move into boarding house, a facility at the United World College in Singapore. The move was not the easiest thing for us to do and this quilt became very special to her. After completing her high school, she took the quilt to Utrecht in Holland. There she graduated from uni and now she is moving again, this time to London for her studies. She wanted a quilt that resembles the sea and when I saw the name 'Storm at Sea', I knew this quilt was the one to make for her. It comes from a lovely book More Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift. The use of different sizes of triangles gives a lovely movement to the quilt. Tomorrow is the day and there goes the quilt again! My DD is ready to move on and there is that pinch of an empty nest, again. But hey, I better get moving on too, b'cause in a short while my bee-ladies will be knocking at my door! Keep on quilting! Sometimes you see something and you get a teeny bit obsessed with it. I happened upon a Storm At Sea pattern a few months ago. I can't remember what appealed to me first but I started googling the pattern and my search revealed a whole host of variations. I was completely taken by it, it's total versatility! The same blocks arranged and rearranged, the same blocks with 2 colours, with 3 colours with an array of colours, with an extra block thrown in........ the completely different patterns it can make are endless! I spotted the picture below and knew this was going to be the variation I would make. It reminded me of Moroccan and Tunisian tiled floors. When I was 2 or 3 weeks engaged, I went to Gibraltar with my friend and fiancé and we took a day trip to Morocco......and we ended up in Tunisia on our honeymoon so you can imagine that I have lots of good memories from both places and wanted to recreate a little of that....... Anyone who has happened upon my blog before knows that I'm a bit of a divil for the foundation paper piecing method and since this was going to be my first repetitious pattern in quite a while, I decided to go with this method again as it takes the guess work and the accuracy out of it. I hate ripping anything back and when there are multiple seams...... this way is just easier. My sewing room floor. My poor sewing room floor. I meant to take a picture but I'd like you all to think that I'm a pillar of organisation and work only at a station of complete tidyness and order.....but those of you who have worked at paper piecing, you know what I mean by my poor sewing room floor! ;) I took a little break in between blocks and made my little fabric covered box and it proved very handy for holding my little stack until I was ready to add them all together. I stuck with the blue and white colour scheme from the picture I originally fell for. I thought it was perfect and why mess with perfection. I did however choose a navy "shadow" from Stof instead of a solid colour. It gives a little more texture and dimension, I think. I did hours and hours and hours of chain piecing and slowly my blocks built up. Each block is easy but the process is very time consuming and a tad monotonous! Let's just say, I can't wait for my new sewing machine which will have a built-in thread cutter so save me trimming hundreds of threads! That alone sucked hours of my time! Worth it though... I moved my sewing machine from my sewing room, to the kitchen table, to the coffee table in front of the tv and back to my sewing room again..........just to change things up a bit. In truth, I dislike repetitive patterns, I get bored easily. I think that's why I like foundation paper piecing, you get to change things up completely and make very, very accurate tiny pieces with minimal points to match up! I had intended to make a king size quilt for our bed....... everytime I look at it, I'm reminded of those first months and years together with my husband because of the memories it evokes but it wasn't to be! My husband suffered from a case of labrynthitis not long after our twins were born in 2011. It was caused by a simple ear infection but the ear infection was caused by those first few weeks of pure exhaustion brought on by 2 newborns in the house. At the time, it was a terrible bout, he was off work for a good length (no joke for a self-employed person), he was so dizzy that he couldn't hold his babies and couldn't stand straight without the room spinning. He still suffers when he's run down or overly stressed out and the dizzyness takes over........ well, I don't know what it says for my poor quilt because everytime he looks at it, he grabs the counter and turns away while muttering something about it being "lovely, dear". I have joked about getting my own room if I do make a kingsize because I don't think he could actually get under this quilt but I'm not ready for seperate beds just yet! So that's how my king-size plan converted to an over-sized lap-quilt. It's probably more of a single quilt size but since I don't have any single beds at my house, this is going to be a throw quilt for the couch for our new conservatory when it's finished! Can I just mention that while I do love paper-piecing, I am SICK of pulling those papers out. Thank heavens I chose to use Carol Doaks actual paper-piecing paper as opposed to using standard printer paper as I used to. This falls out in comparison but still it's a tedious job. To those who always said it was therapeutic, I'm calling you in future to avail of free therapy at my house when I'm finished a paper-piecing project! You have been warned! I had planned on three borders, skinny blue, medium white and then a large outside blue border but I've decided I hate adding borders - not the look, I just ALWAYS seem to measure wrong and end up 3/8 inch short!! Grrr, so right now, I've stopped at a skinny blue border........ I'll give it a rest and see if I can get the motivation to do the rest!

The queen-sized Storm at Sea quilt is progressing thanks to some hours I've been able to put in over the weekend. I hit another bump in the road, though, and I want to share my mistakes to hopefully save you from repeating them on your projects. 1. Get a 1/4" sewing machine foot pronto. I waited to get a 1/4" foot until after I started piecing this quilt. I figured I would just move my needle position to create the 1/4" seam. Unfortunately, I didn't realize my machine was resetting the needle position every time I turned it off. I was too far into this quilt by the time I realized it, so this mammajamma has 3/8" seams. You lose fabric this way, and it adds up fast. 2. Follow the instructions if the pattern tells you to press seam allowances to one side or the other. I mindlessly started pressing seam allowances to the darker fabric on my sashing blocks. Fail. The blocks didn't come together right. Luckily I made a test block first and realized my mistake. I only had to rip out a few seams, but I still had to repress about 180 seams. 3. Cut extra pieces to allow for big mistakes down the line. Because of the 3/8" seam allowance and my preference for longer drops on bed quilts, I'm going to have to add extra rows of blocks to this quilt. 4. At first, assemble only the blocks you know you'll need. I take an assembly line approach to piecing blocks. This can be a problem if you stop paying attention and make the same mistake 70 times. (See point 2.) With my sashing blocks, there's a long diamond shape and four right right triangles attached to make the block a rectangle. Two of the pieces are attached in the same orientation and the other two pieces are just reversed. I had extra diamond shapes and mindlessly attached two right triangles to all of the diamonds I had. By the time I started attaching the second two triangles to all of the diamonds, I was low on triangles. If I had kept count of blocks I was completing, I would have set the extra diamonds aside. As it is now, I got some more Kona white, and it's back to the cutting table. I hope your projects are progressing with fewer snafus!

Many, many thanks to Madame Samm and to Cherry for organizing all of us, keeping us on schedule and creating such a fun Blog Hop. The colors of fall "leaf" me happy so the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop is right up my alley. Our instructions were to make fall blocks - not necessarily to finish them up, just make them to share. So........ I worked on adding some fall colored New York Beauty blocks. The blue is actually purple!! They will be added to others that I have been working on to eventually make a quilt. These are the new ones to which I added a few of the others so you can see where I am going with this. Our neighborhood is invaded each evening by hundreds of black crows at this time of the year. They come for the falling acorns that are run over in the street. The caw-caw calling of the birds is deafening for several hours each night so in honor of the crows I created this. It is hand quilted and embroidered. A glimpse of our street with the birds. What would autumn be without turkeys and the wonderful smells from the kitchen? This will be my Tom overseeing the cooking of Thanksgiving dinner. Lastly, I made a block that Cherry designed. This is a great paper pieced block in candy corn orange scraps. One block does not tell the whole story though. As you add more blocks to this the spinning illusion comes into play. I'm not sure how big I will eventually make it, but I love it.
