Perfect for Wedding or Anniversary quilt. This quilt kit makes a very large queen sized kit as shown in the first picture. Finished quilt will measure approx 88" x 103". I can custom make other kits in colors of your choice. This kit is made mostly of fabrics by Northcott. Kit includes enough fabric to make the top, binding and the pattern. The ruler "Diamond Rects" is optional. The pattern explains how to make the quilt without the Diamond Rects ruler, it's just easier and faster using the ruler ($47 CDN dollars, $34.50 US dollars when bought with the kit).

This quilt I made for my daughter Leanne, about 4 years ago, when she was staying behind in Singapore to finish her high school. We moved to Vietnam, Saigon, for my husband's work, and she could move into boarding house, a facility at the United World College in Singapore. The move was not the easiest thing for us to do and this quilt became very special to her. After completing her high school, she took the quilt to Utrecht in Holland. There she graduated from uni and now she is moving again, this time to London for her studies. She wanted a quilt that resembles the sea and when I saw the name 'Storm at Sea', I knew this quilt was the one to make for her. It comes from a lovely book More Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift. The use of different sizes of triangles gives a lovely movement to the quilt. Tomorrow is the day and there goes the quilt again! My DD is ready to move on and there is that pinch of an empty nest, again. But hey, I better get moving on too, b'cause in a short while my bee-ladies will be knocking at my door! Keep on quilting! Hilde
Beautiful variation of a "Storm" quilt. The Queen finishes at 90" x90". The large lap/wall is 68? x 68". The blocks are large, so it sews together quite quickly. I find this is easier and faster to make using the Diamond Rects ruler ($35 CDN$ or $25 US$). The ruler is not necessary, just makes piecing and trimming easier. For wholesale orders, please buy through Checker or send me a message. Hard copy is also listed.
Today I am returning to Memory Lane with a Storm at Sea quilt. Unfortunately the color looks dull on this page. It is really quite vibrant even though some of the colors are pastel. I used Michael Miller's Fairy Frost fabrics for the light colors. After the Storm This is a fascinating pattern and has been done numerous times with almost as many variations as quilts. It is interesting, it is colorful and it has amazing movement, and it all happens with only two blocks and a variation on one of those two blocks as demonstrated below. These were drawn on Adobe Illustrator with precision in mind. After I had drawn the basic pieces I set them together in the general design of the common "Storm at Sea" and began to add color. I actually did only one quarter of it because all four quarters are exactly the same. It is like working in a coloring book, which I loved doing as a child. You don't have to, but I paper pieced the blocks because I like the precision I get with this technique, and the pieces are pretty small. The blocks are only 4" square with the diamond being 2"x4." Of course, they can be made any comparable size you want. I have done a miniature with 2" blocks and have seen it done with 8" blocks. I labeled every column (8 of them) with a letter. I labeled every row with a number (1-8) and the center row with a capital C. On each quarter I only needed one of the center row as the other center column (that would be the "i" column) goes on the adjoining quarter. A color print of this labeled quarter was pinned to my design wall to keep me on the straight and narrow. I keep old envelopes in a sewing drawer for organization purposes. These are just small mailing envelopes and I labeled each one in pencil (so I can erase and use them for the next project): 1a, 1b, 1c…….., 2a, 2b, 2c,…….., etc. That is a lot of envelopes and each one ended up with four of its labelled block, one for each quarter of the quilt. A shoebox is nice to keep them all corralled. Once organized like this I was able to take my box of completed blocks to Quilt Camp and put it all together without having to think very hard. Even so, when I got home I noticed 4 blocks either in the wrong place or turned 90º or 180º. Yes, I had to haul out the seam ripper, turn, and restitch. I think I had to make one block over again from scratch, but considering that I had 288 blocks all together it could have been worse. Once complete, I added a seaworthy fabric as a frame. The quilting is an edge-to-edge ocean wave sort of design. See, I am getting better. I tried a new pattern for my quilting and got lots of practice doing a simple, curvy design so I could concentrate on moving my quilt around and keeping my stitches even….and I didn't even have to mark the quilting lines after practicing on scraps. The quilt blocks are not hard, but you just have to be careful putting them together right. See the many variations of this design on Pinterest. You can get a free pattern here or you can draw your own as I did. TIP: Color or mark your paper foundation to make sure you are putting the right color in the right place. I print out my foundations with about 40% color opacity so I am sure to grab the right fabric as I am piecing. TIP: Organization is critical for a quilt like this. If you look closely, blocks with the same basic design often have colors placed differently. TIP: Check twice or more before sewing the pieces together. It is too easy to get one of them turned. TIP: Watch your points so you don't clip them off as you sew the seams. TIP: Practice your quilting. It is the only way to improve.
There isn't anything new to show on my design wall this week, but I do have a new quilt on my bed. I finished the binding on my Storm at Sea quilt yesterday! It was too windy outside yesterday to hang the quilt up for photos. You can see a full shot of the unquilted top here. I am thrilled to have it finished and on the bed. My first thought once I laid it out on the bed (after "I can't believe that's finally done!") was "Now I need some matching pillowcases." That answers the question of what to work on next. Check out what others have been working on at Patchwork Times. Julie
I made this quilt for my husband's brother Tom and his new wife Margaret in 1988 as a wedding gift. It is from a collection of blue scraps in my collection, plus some new fabrics. I followed a pattern I found in Judy Martin's book Scrap Quilts. Many people still think that I am the Judy Martin who wrote all those wonderful quilt pattern books but I am not her. I would reccomend her books however, as they are excellent resources for traditional piecework patterns. number eighty two
I created this King size quilt from traditional Storm at Sea blocks. I combined my "Heatwaves" design with Ocean waves border. I used the shades of aqua, the color of the water. The pattern contains the material requirements, cutting and piecing instructions, quilt assemble guide and adding border with mitered corners. The step by step instructions are illustrated with color images and easy to follow. Please open the pattern with the latest version of Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader to display and print everything correctly. You can print the pattern in booklet format to save ink and paper. Templates and/or foundation papers have to be printed with "Actual size" printer settings. You can download or update Adobe Acrobat: https://get.adobe.com/reader/ Quilt on the photo was made by: Lynn Perreault

The Storm at Sea quilt is on hold until I have more time to spend at the machine. It was looking like the top would be done by the end of April and I could deliver it to my longarm quilter next week, but it would have ended up being a rush job to finish the top. Better to slow down, get it right, and deliver it in June. I've been wanting to try English paper piecing for awhile, and decided to go ahead with it now since there will be some travel time over the next few months, both plane and long stretches in the car. I am going to make a medallion of hexagons with fabrics pulled for the April Color Palette Challenge. For once I am starting with a small project before I dive in head first! The photo shows part of the layout as I was choosing the background fabric. Check out more amazing design walls at Patchwork Times Julie

Habe meinen Storm-at-Sea fertiggequiltet. Hier ein paar Bilder davon. I finally finished quilting my Storm-at-Sea quilt. Here are a few pics. I am almost on my way to the US and Canada for a few weeks vacation. I will be able to see maaaaaaany quilts (e.g. while visiting Amish country in Pennsylvania or at the Quilt Extravaganza in Harrisburg,PA) and I will visit America's biggest quilt shop and ... I will look for moose at Moosehead Lake in Maine - of course ;-) I don't know whether I will be able to post some photos during my trip. In any case see you in September!!!
