Com'è noto il successo di Piccole donne fu enorme sin da subito e quasi subito le lettrici cominciarono a scalpitare per avere un seguito. Posso capirlo perché anch'io, quando vidi quella robaccia raffigurata a sinistra e lessi sul retro che era il seguito di Piccole donne mi precipitai a comprarlo, nonostante in famiglia mi avessero cresciuto con una certa diffidenza verso quella strana roba ibrida che sono spesso i seguiti. Per giunta, la copertina avrebbe fatto cascare i denti a un elefante, zuccherosa com'era, e anche le illustrazioni all'interno non erano certo da meno - senza contare che l'essere umano addetto a cotali illustrazioni aveva un solo personaggio maschile e un solo personaggio femminile (e, aggiungo, un solo vestito per ognuno dei due) al suo arco, cui all'occorrenza cambiava colore dei capelli - ma sempre mantenendo la stessa pettinatura, quella che vedete raffigurata in questa non memorabile opera grafica. Anzi no, per il professor Bhaer dovette cambiare qualcosa, e in effetti era l'unico che sembrava un essere umano. Alcott era brava, operosa e prolifica e il seguito fu pronto nel giro di un anno; in seguito, venne considerato la seconda parte del primo. Ora che ci penso, il pubblico avrebbe probabilmente gradito una serie di romanzi uno per ogni anno della vita delle sorelle March senza che la scena cambiasse granché e con nuovi personaggi introdotti gradualmente. Alcott comunque vedeva la cosa in modo diverso e l'arco di tempo coperto dal secondo romanzo è di sei anni, più un quadro finale che si svolge sei anni dopo. A tutto ciò occorre aggiungere che il romanzo si apre con il matrimonio di Meg che, come annunciato sul finire del primo romanzo, si svolge tre anni dopo il suo fidanzamento. Le piccole donne quindi crescono assai, e in effetti alla fine della storia sono ampiamente adulte. Dunque sedici anni, ma il cuore della vicenda ne copre sei. Meg si sposa, e godrà in seguito una vita coniugale tranquilla e soddisfacente, anche se con qualche inevitabile contrattempo. Anche Amy si sposa, ma dietro le quinte. Jo si limita a fidanzarsi (per poi sposarsi un anno dopo, come raccontato nell'ultimo capitolo) e Beth... Beth muore, come sanno assolutamente tutti su questo pianeta. Perché Beth muore? Perché in un romanzo vittoriano (e in fondo, Piccole donne quello è) c'è sempre l'eroina angelica che muore in odore di santità, si pensa di solito. La questione però è più complessa. Come sanno anche i sassi, le quattro ragazze March sono (quasi) esattamente le sorelle Alcott e anche i signori March riprendono parecchio dai genitori dell'autrice. La quale si prese, con le sue sorelle, le sue buone libertà ma con Beth non riuscì ad andare oltre al fatto, appunto, che Beth morì molto giovane. Aveva preso la scarlattina, era guarita... ma non del tutto, e dopo un lento declinare era morta di consunzione. Classica morte da Eroina Buona e Innocente, morte molto edificante... ma non era stata letteratura, era andata proprio così, e al di là di quello Louise non riuscì ad andare. Anni prima Charlotte Bronte si era tolta la soddisfazione di far vivere felice sua sorella, carattere indomabile ma poi domato dall'amore, un matrimonio assai felice e per giunta l'aveva trasformata in una ricca ereditiera che gestiva in prima persona un grandioso patrimonio. Louise non ci riuscì, o meglio non ci provò nemmeno. In qualche modo la morte di Beth era intrinseca al personaggio. E la morte di Beth, serenamente accettata dalla povera ragazza, si svolge in un lento smorzarsi, con grande edificazione della famiglia. Chi ci è passato sa che a volte succede proprio così, e in casa Alcott appunto così erano andate le cose. E per le altre tre? Ci sono invece dei bei cambiamenti. Louise Alcott non si sposò mai e per quanto ne sappiamo la cosa non le dispiacque. Nel romanzo però non poteva andare così - non so se l'editore disse qualcosa in proposito, ma l'autrice non viveva sulla Luna e ne era quindi assai consapevole. Non per questo accettò la soluzione più ovvia, quella che i lettori si aspettavano: Jo non sposa Laurie, con grandissima e generale disapprovazione (anche nel libro, dove nessuno si capacita e solo i genitori, sospirando, se ne fanno una ragione, ben consapevoli che il marito ha da piacere a chi si sposa e l'affetto non sempre basta a garantire la felicità coniugale. Invece avvia una fiorente attività di scrittrice, con i suoi inevitabili alti e bassi, e alla fine si sposa, sì, ma non col giovane, ricco bello e di onesti principi che da sempre è il suo migliore amico, bensì con il vecchio (beh, non troppo vecchio, ma certamente non adatto a entusiasmare le ragazzine innamorate di Laurie) professore tedesco, povero, immigrato e con un sacco di idee strane sul mondo e sull'educazione. Molti hanno visto in questo una scelta punitiva dell'autrice verso sé stessa - quasi che non si fosse mai visto il caso di una ragazza che, a dispetto dell'universo mondo, si sposa un uomo con parecchi anni più di lei; e qualcuno ha pure evocato il fantasma di un padre troppo amato. Eppure, secondo me, il punto è che Alcott voleva far sposare al suo alter ego una persona che le piacesse; e Laurie è sì un carissimo ragazzo, ma ripensandoci non solo ha un carattere piuttosto vago e indistinto, ma, in un certo senso, non esiste. Nel primo romanzo serve soprattutto come reagente - fa da voce della coscienza a Meg quando la trova alla fiera delle vanità, fa da fratello maggiore ad Amy quando è abbandonata dalla zia March per isolarla dalla scarlattina di Beth, fa da paraninfo più o meno inconsapevole tra Meg e John Brooke, aiuta Jo a tirare fuori Amy da sotto il ghiaccio - anzi, par di capire che senza Laurie la povera Amy sotto il ghiaccio sarebbe rimasta, perché Jo in quel momento ha perso completamente la testa - fornisce all'occorrenza la famiglia March di beni di conforto in varie occasioni, assiste moralmente Jo quando va a consegnare un paio di racconti a un editore, ma per tutto il primo libro non vive mai di vita propria e, al contrario delle ragazze, non attraversa alcun tipo di crisi, evoluzione o rinnovamento - del resto, perché mai un reagente dovrebbe vivere di vita propria? Nel secondo romanzo, che dire - Laurie non fa in sintesi un bel niente a parte essere tenuto a distanza da Jo che lo vede troppo innamorato, diplomarsi e chiedere di sposarla. Sotto l'effetto del trauma da rifiuto si abbandona a una vita di modeste sregolatezze e a una certa inattività. Amy si prende l'incarico di fargli da voce della coscienza, lo risveglia e Laurie decide così di sposare lei. Non ho mai visto questa cosa come un ripiego, ma in effetti non si può non convenire che si tratti di una storia d'amore abbastanza smorta, e nei due romanzi successivi siamo sì abbondantemente informati che il loro matrimonio è felice, ma quando se ne parla il lettore si annoia, senza se e senza ma. Anche perché - sorpresa! - non è un rapporto dei più dinamici e i due non sembrano mai interagire tra loro. Altro piccolo dettaglio su Amy: nel corso di Piccole donne crescono anche lei prova a coltivare il suo talento per le belle arti, ma ben presto, guidata da un notevole senso critico che non le ha mai fatto difetto, finisce per rendersi conto che il talento, per quanto coltivato con cura e dedizione, non può evolversi in genio, e finisce per limitarsi a qualche garbata produzione privata (anche se a fine romanzo accenna di non aver ancora abbandonato le sue aspirazioni artistiche, in effetti). Una scelta curiosa perché, ho scoperto con una certa sorpresa, la sua controparte Abigail May Alcott diventò invece una pittrice di una certa rilevanza, anche se ebbe l'incauta pensata di morire prima di compiere quarant'anni. Ma in effetti per una ragazzina bionda, bella e di raffinati interessi artistici in un romanzo la fine giusta è sposarsi un eroe di tipo classico, giovane, bello e ricco - e d'altra parte Laurie aveva ben diritto a non sposarsi fuori dalla cerchia delle sorelle March, dopo avergli fatto da reagente in tante e diverse occasioni. Tra ,l'altro, quale lettrice avrebbe apprezzato di vederlo sposato alla simpaticissima signorina XY sbucata a metà libro dal nulla e del tutto estranea alla prima vicenda? Cosa fare invece con Meg? Meg all'inizio del romanzo si sposa, e conosce così il suo momento di gloria. Poi vivrà la sua serena vita coniugale nella casetta vicina a quella della sua famiglia, ma senza più interagire veramente con loro - con una sola eccezione. Le vengono riservati due cammei. Nel primo, a parte un quadretto di maniera su una drammatica vicenda a base di marmellate (e quale donna non ha provato almeno una volta in vita sua il disappunto della brodaglia che non ne vuol sapere di trasformarsi in marmellata? Solo le poche, savie creature che la marmellata la lasciano fare agli altri, e possibilmente agli addetti ai lavori) abbiamo una specie di seguito del viaggio di Meg alla fiera delle vanità - che culmina, sembra di capire, con una guarigione definitiva da certe tentazioni. Nel secondo è invece affrontato un tema decisamente serio, ovvero come impedire che il primo figlio rischi di scardinarti il matrimonio - e viene affrontato à la March, ovvero con teorie assai sennate ma che faticano tuttora ad affermarsi, e che possono essere riassunte nei due principi cardine "coinvolgi il padre nella gestione dei figli, e coltiva la tua vita perché stare solo con i figli ti svuota", principi che la saggia madre scodella alla figlia dall'alto di una considerevole esperienza - dopotutto, lei di figli ne ha avuti quattro - ma che gli editori italiani hanno sempre falciato con gran disinvoltura mentre sforbiciavano i romanzi destinati alle bambine, anche quando lasciavano l'unica scena d'amore tra Laurie e Amy (e su questa curiosa tendenza degli editori di libri per ragazzi negli anni 60 e 70 di rimuovere le scene d'amore anche e soprattutto dai romanzi che principalmente d'amore trattavano sarebbe forse interessante indagare, chissà). Alla fine del romanzo, nell'ultima scena, abbiamo tre coppie felici, ognuna delle quali benedetta da qualche figlio - nazi quattro, contando i genitori delle protagoniste, e uno strano college che magari non farà mai tendenza, ma dove tutti stanno a meraviglia e si divertono un mondo e gli alunni sono allevati con criteri rivoluzionari che comprendono - orrore! - una considerevole dose di autonomia per tutti i giovinetti; e, come viene ripetuto più volte, non diventeranno mai ricchi. Un lieto fine per tutti, dunque, e un'atmosfera rasserenante nonostante le traversie e traversine che non sono mancate nel corso del romanzo. Una lettura gradevole, carica di vitalità e che, vista nella prospettiva di un secolo e mezzo dopo non manca di ispirare riflessioni di vario tipo.
