Continuing with Winning Quilts from the Craft & Quilt Fair in Melbourne late last month, presented by the Victorian Quilters Inc. here are the BEST OF SHOW and RUNNER UP. BEST OF SHOW "COLOURFUL RETINA" by SUGY KIM Sugy said "The eye is the window of the human body through which it feels the beauty of the world and also the sorrow of the world. What a human eye sees is an illusion of what is real. It is the retina of the eye which converts the light into neural signals and sends these signals on to the brain for visual recognition and interpretation. My quilt is the perception of a beautiful life seeing through a colourful retina. Having a colourful retina will always see a positive, happy and bright side of human life. Hand appliqué, hand and machine piecing, hand quilted. My own original design." (forgive the black bar through the middle of my photo, that was the barrier prohibiting people from getting too close) "Colourful Retina" was entered in the Innovative Quilts section, for which it won First Place and then was awarded Best of Show. CONGRATULATIONS SUGY KIM Quilt measures 207cm x 207cm RUNNER UP to BEST OF SHOW was "CAMEO ROSE" by ELIZABETH ALLEN whom we all know as "Lizzy Allen" "Cameo Rose" won First Place in the Mainly Appliqué Professional Section. I chose to use Sharon Schamber's method of machine needleturn using water soluble appliqué paper. The appliqué fabric is Hoffman hand dye fabrics and peach homespun background. I used a khaki thread to tone down the peach and make it less peachy. Machine appliqué. Machine quilted by myself on a track mounted, stitch regulated hand guided system." Product Description Reviews This set includes Clifton Blocks, Border, Corner, Half Blocks. Quarter Blocks, Sashing and Triangle.
Back in December last year, I hosted a giveaway for a roll up of blue Cotton Couture fabric from my wonderful sponsors Polka Dot Tea fabrics and Danielle and Jeanette generously sent me a roll up as well. It's no secret that I'm a massive fan of cotton couture - I first used it last year when I made Galaxy and it was love at first touch. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to work with the roll up! Around the same time, I bought Karlee Porter's self published Grafitti Quilting book (which is excellent), and instantly wanted to give grafitti quilting a try - and what better way to feature quilting than working on an all-solids quilt? This idea percolated away for a while, and then when I came back from QuiltCon I came up with a solid plan for how I wanted to approach it. I started by sorting the strips by value (using the black and white function on my camera), attempting to have a smooth transition from dark to light across the quilt top. I nearly managed it, but I think I accidentally switched a few strips around while I was piecing it so there are a couple that don't quite transition smoothly - but it's close enough for the effect I wanted ;o) Once it was pieced and basted I dived straight into the quilting. I was lucky enough to attend a class with Krista Withers (one of my quilty heroes) at QuiltCon, and I came home full of ideas I wanted to try. One of the best things I came away from Krista's class with was ideas for how to approach breaking up negative space with quilting, and I wanted to incorporate some of that into the quilting on this quilt. So I decided to use a combination of grafitti quilting and Krista's ideas and hope for the best. I decided to use this as a learning experience, and just go with it - no ripping stitches, no self-criticism but just have fun and play. As a result it was one of the most enjoyable quilts to quilt - and I'm delighted with how it turned out. It was a brilliant learning quilt - finding some new (to me) shapes and combinations of designs, and getting LOTS of ideas for future quilts. I made this quilt for my baby nephew, who lives in a house with polished boards, so I used a double layer of wool batting on this quilt thinking it would be a lovely quilt for wriggle time (and to play on as he gets older). The resulting texture is pretty incredible - I think it will be a really great sensory quilt as he gets older and starts to explore things more. I'm using a double layer of batting more and more on smaller quilts - I just can't get enough of the texture it gives. I don't think I'd do it on anything much bigger than this (it's about 40" x 60") due to the added weight, but as I'm becoming more confident with my quilting, I'm really loving the added puff two layers gives. The quilting is all Aurifil 50wt thread - a variegated blue in the darker area of the quilt, and then a light variegated grey in the lighter area. Overall the thread has blended beautifully and has just left all the glorious texture. The combination of cotton couture, double layer batting and all that quilting makes for a pretty luxurious quilt - it's silky soft to touch and it is very comfy to lie on (as this little cutie can attest!) I can't promise I'll have two posts in such quick succession again by the way - but these wintery nights are much better suited to sitting on the couch with my laptop than braving my freezing cold sewing room, and I have lots of things I need to share, so I might actually become a regular blogger again ;o) xx Jess
I quilted this quilt up for Jodi right before my computer crashed and was lucky I didn't download these pictures yet! I've been anxiously waiting to share these with you and knew it was okay after seeing Jodi's post on it today. Congrats to her, this quilt pattern is available in the latest issue of "Quilt It", a quilting magazine! I believe this quilt was the first Jodi had ever sent out to be longarm quilted and I didn't want to disappoint her. I think she liked how it turned out. Her husband liked it and that's always a good sign. I wanted the quilting to have a partriotic feel to it, I like the scallops around the border. I always love to add some curves to my quilting, I think they accentuate straight lines really well. Jodi had mentioned she likes feathers, so I knew I wanted to add some feathers. I wanted to keep the quilting simple in the red/blue print fabric. I did some straight line quilting and it wasn't the easiest...I had to start and stop quite a bit....but it's exactly what it needed and I'm happy with it! I met Jodi at Quilt Market this last weekend. She really is an amazing and talented quilter. I loved this quilt! It was a hard one to let it go. ~Jenny~
I have a few exciting teaching announcements and a ton of planning, prepping, stitching, retreating, drawing, and scheming ahead of me. I will make this post picture heavy and hopefully brief. I have been invited to teach at some very exciting shows in 2016 and I couldn't be more excited! QUILTCON FEB 2016 To start the year I will be at Quiltcon in Pasadena teaching, all hands on classes. I had an amazing time in Austin and am really looking forward to February. MQX APRIL 2016 In April I will be teaching at MQX in New Hampshire. New England will be gorgeous in April and I am looking forward to returning as a teacher instead of a student. I am teaching two hands on classes as well as some lecture/demo classes. To sign up for my classes click here. MQS MAY 2016 In May I will be off to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to teach at MQS, registration is not open yet, but should be in the upcoming weeks! SMQG 2015 But hey! 2015 isn't over yet and I am thrilled to be hosted by the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild for a drawing/ modern whole cloth design workshop. Join me Sunday, November 15th, 2015 from 10:30-4:45 at Tukwila Sew and Vac Click here to register, there are 5 spots left and registration is open to the general public now. WORKSHOPS!! YAY! Shown below are a few examples of what my Compositional Drawing/Whole cloth design class will look like. I am teaching this class at Quiltcon, MQX and at Tukwila sew and vac with SMQG. The photos below are samples that I have been making for my Broken Wreath and Ghost Shapes lecture/demo classes at MQX and MQS. Here, I used contrasting blue thread, definitely out of my comfort zone but it's a great exercise and the designs can really pop out. Shown below is quilting on one of the samples that I marked out in my whole cloth design class, this technique quilts out pretty fast and has been a very liberating way for me to look at quilting. And Voila! I've said it before but making class samples always opens up new doors for me. This style of quilting has inspired me to start working on a whole cloth (type) design, that's really not a whole cloth at all. Here are a few photos of my latest project which I will go into more detail as I figure out what I'm actually doing. The design is inspired by the stitch and flip triangle which is sprinkled through a lot of Katie Pedersen's work. I took her magic numbers class and was amazed at the possibilities that exist within this format. I am approaching this project with the intentions of doing it entirely on the longarm so there will actually be no stitch and flip anything, all of the piecing will be raw edge appliqué but the design is certainly inspired by Katie's work, which you can find in her and Jacquie's fabulous book, Quilting Modern. Off to get my week going, thanks for taking the time to read and I look forward to meeting some of you in my classes in the months to follow!! xo

Hi friends I am excited to share a finished quilt with you all today - the Scrappy version of the Asterisks Quilt! When I originally designed this quilt it was supposed to be a follow up to the Snowflake pattern. I wanted something with more snowflakes than just the one large one - and here we are with the Asterisks quilt pattern. I used white for the Asterisks shapes to really show off that snow look I was hoping for. The background I wanted bold and colorful patchwork - to match our holiday decorations, so the Hopscotch bundle of Century solids was a perfect fit! This actually is the very first version of the quilt I made when I was working on the pattern, so it definitely has a special place in my heart. Fabrics used for the scrappy background: The scrappy background calls for 13 Fat Quarters, but you can always add more for a scrappier look. Century Solids used from the Hopscotch bundle are: Century solids from Andover Fabrics / Hopscotch Bundle by Alison Glass can be found here. Blue Bell Brass Butternut Squash Guacamole Guava Punch Isle Margarita Orchid Paprika Passion Strawberry Teal Wisteria For the quilting, my talented friend Katie from Modern Textiles used the pants Late Night - I think it was such a great idea - those asterisks shapes really pop! We haven't put up our holiday decorations yet this year - so until I have my colorful tree up - this will have to do. Thanks for stopping by today to check out my latest finish! If you are interested in sewing along with us and want to make an Asterisks or Snowflake quilt of your own, we are currently having a Snowalong. Check out the blog for more info! Happy Sewing, Nicole

Hi there! It has been a while. It is hard to keep up blogging with all that is going on in my life, but I hope you are happy with waiting because I have had some exciting things going on. I have had
One of the displays at our guild Quilt Show this spring will be a Paint Chip Challenge. We had guild members pick a paint chip sample out of a bag, no peeking, and they have to make a quilted item using those colors. We want this to be fun so just have the public vote for their favourites instead of judging. So the quilt above is Lynn’s Paint Chip Challenge baby quilt. As you can see she got a green paint sample and when I saw her sample card she did a great job matching the colors. My paint chip I picked was brown and gold! I have no clue what I’m going to make but I better figure it out soon as our show is at the end of April! I’ve seen a lot of the members projects and they are fantastic so it will be a great display for the public. I wanted to show you the before picture of this quilt as Lynn felt the quilting really transformed it. Lynn wanted Dream Puff batting and light quilting so it stays soft and cuddly. She came up with her own design for this quilt and after some discussion we came up with a quilting plan. CC’s in the green fabrics, large swirls in the white. I call this Fluffy Modern! Most modern quilts use flat batting with simple or heavy quilting but I really like how this looks with some much soft texture, perfect for a baby quilt. The backing is a white Minkie Dots so that ups the fluffy factor! Here is a link to the tutorial on how to make this quilt pattern. Hope this inspires our guild members to get there Paint Chip Challenges done, it has inspired me!
