As it turns out I am not very motivated to clean my studio. I headed out there this weekend with all good intentions of getting my space clean and I honestly cleaned (or more accurately, contemplated cleaning) for a total of five minutes before I found myself distracted by a drawing I had started at Quiltcon in my Compositional Quilting/DRAWING class. I have to admit that after returning home from Quiltcon I have felt a little panicked. Panicked that I taught everything I had and that I was going to be out of ideas. I began looking through some of the pictures I had taken while teaching (admittedly way too few) and that beautiful quote by Leonard Nimoy came back to me again. "The Miracle is this, the more we share, the more we have." Some Brilliant student work Wow. Wow. Wow. and WOW. It was either the threat of cleaning or all of the energy and openness that I absorbed from my students that inspired me again....or maybe a little bit of both. I wasn't really out of ideas after all. Phew. I put away any thoughts about cleaning (which wasn't hard) and started drawing and then quilting something I am pretty sure will be a sample for another class. As a rule I don't generally mark on quilts. A whole cloth type quilt is obviously an exception to this rule. In my Compositional Quilting/DRAWING class we spend the class marking on mylar and then marking on a whole cloth. Many years ago I took a whole cloth design class from Karen McTavish. It was a full day spent designing a whole cloth quilt that we took home to quilt. If you ever find yourself with an opportunity to take a class with her or see her lecture, DO IT, I'm not kidding. Whole cloth quilts are traditional by nature and are generally designed using beautiful floral or feathered motifs, stencils and if you have the patience the quilting usually involves some trapunto. This was my finished Wholecloth quilt from Karens class. From class to quilt. In my Compositional Drawing-(expanded version) class it is my hope to merge the traditional with a more modern aesthetic. I don't know that a whole cloth will ever be considered "modern" but I do believe in my heart of hearts that there is a place for this type of quilting and design somewhere. This is the fundamental basis for Compositional Quilting Filling in the blanks I had to get rid of my free motion drawn swirls, I found I could not follow my own drawings. I managed to quilt in the areas of feathers I should have left unquilted Some new moon ideas This is as far as I got, not bad for a weekend. As you can see, cleaning is overrated and I am not out of ideas yet. I am hoping to be teaching this class and many others in the near future. I will keep you posted on the details here. For those of you who feel inspired by this post, awesome. For those of you who enjoyed this post but feel less inspired and more discouraged by this post this last picture is for you. While I openly admit I have skills, I know that those skills didn't come without a lot of failures, practice and flat out shitty quilting. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt, be ok with shit quilting, move on, take classes, learn as much as you can from yourself and others. You will never quilt exactly like me, just as I will never quilt exactly like Karen McTavish. And thank goodness for that, lord knows theres only room for one of her, and me and you. Be ok with that. The kitchen is almost finished and the flu has gone so back to normal with more info about my clas in Nantes. A boutis is one of these invaluable treasures that we inherited from the Provence region of France. It is a type of embroidery made up of two layers of cotton, white according to tradition, but modern demands mean that now accessoires can be done in a variety of colours, Those two layers are stitched together by hand, with tiny stitches, following a previously drawn pattern which can be incredibly complex, it depends what the designer is hoping to create. Once the entire stitch work is completed we gently separate the material fibres with a small and sharp wooden stick to enable us to introduce a little portion of cotton wool into the cavity created , which gives the final stuffed appearance Afterwards, using the point of a fine needle, we push into place the fibres, to hide all trace of the work that has been done. This is to obtain a work absolutely identical on both face and riverside of the work of art. This involves of course and extremely long, painstaking and refined work demanding a high level of skill. These days the word "boutis" is often employed incorrectly to name, for example bed cover designs which are simply quilted, composed of three layers, the face, the underside and the wadding, sandwiched in between. These three elements can be quilted elaborately of simply, depending on the design.. Real "boutis" is immediately recognisable. If held up to the light, the transparency between the patterns is evident and the unstuffed pieces in between are translucent, which creates a play between the shadow and light. I was the June instructor for the Sew Cal Gal's Free Motion Quilting Challenge in June and a large part of my lesson including dividing and conquering a space and then filling it in. It's less intimidating and more manageable that way. Well, that applies to life in general...not just quilting! Before I share my recent projects I want to send out a heart-felt THANK YOU to Sew Cal Gal for inviting me to be a part of this very amazing project and send out a huge congratulations to all the participants. Wow...I was completely blown away by the work that was created this past month. I had planned on doing a feature and picking out several pieces to share with all of you but that proved to be impossible. I loved every single piece...I couldn't choose. I loved spending a little time each evening perusing thru all the Facebook projects that were posted by the participants and was very impressed with the group enthusiasm and support for each other. Thank you all for such an amazing experience that I will never forget. I've been over-the-top busy prepping for my next upcoming 5-day Design Workshop in Rancho Cordova as well as getting ready to film for some upcoming on-line classes. It all seems overwhelming and too much to handle sometimes. While monitoring the FMQ challenge this past month I was reminding myself to "Divide and Conquer"...isn't that what I was telling everyone else to do? So I did. Baby Steps...divide it up...conquer that small space...and then move on. So I am and it's slowly working. All of the binders/handbooks have been loaded and are ready to go...huge project. Not only has my sewing room, the guest room, part of the living room but the kitchen/dining area have been impacted with all the prep work. I have a VERY patient husband...thank you Kent! If one is good, twice is better...so why not make several more teaching samples for the workshop too? Sure, why not??? I teach my students how to take a main focus design and then create dimension, movement and sunshine and shadow around it. These samples are to help them visualize that and give them the confidence to do it themselves. These samples are also showing how to take a basic stencil design, use just the "parts" that you want, and then make it your own. I had loads of fun while doing these. By the way, these were all started in my hotel room in Santa Fe...I was given a loaner machine, (Janome 6600), to use during my stay and put in very long hours getting these going. Thank you Santa Fe! While on the airplane and in the airports back and forth from Santa Fe I was able to get the beadwork started on the Battenburg piece...I'm very happy with how this is looking! There probably won't be any more blog posts until after the design workshop so I loaded up this particular blog with enough pictures to keep you going. I received this beautiful photo and story in my emails yesterday and just KNEW I had to share Sue with all of you...isn't this just beautiful!!!! Sue visits us from Kent, England and says she took up patchwork only three years ago. Her New Year's resolution this year was to get to grips with FMQ with the aim of machine quilting a wholecloth by the end of the year. I think she succeeded, don't you??? Here's her story and more photos below. Thank you Sue! Gorgeous work!!! "The tablecloth was a very inexpensive buy as it had a hole in the centre. I thought the embroidered butterflies were pretty, so wanted to make something useful from it. I mended the hole and then covered it with strategically placed lace butterflies. I drew some flowers on the quilt using a Frixion pen (using simple shapes that I hoped would look good when quilted) and used your Ultimate Stencils for the shape of the centre medallion. I used your Ultimate Backgrounds for the clam shells around the medallion and the 3/4" grid. Once I had quilted the daylights out of it, I used your triple line background stencil for the outside border. I think it gives an elegant look to the outside edge of the quilt. I quilted this on my little, old Bernina 1008. I think she deserves a rest for a couple of days! I am still very new to FMQ but am having fun! " Regards, Sue
