I have a story. (I always have a story.) When I was in Junior High art class we were given the project of making our own rubber stamp to stamp out our own greeting cards (hmm, come to think of it, maybe it was my calling). The nerd that I am, I was so excited to finish the project that I rushed through the end of it and cut myself REALLY badly with the craft knife. So badly that I was removed from ballet class one day because my cut opened up and I was bleeding all over the dance floor. (I'm still in therapy over it - HA!) I still have the scar to prove it. Anyway, since that day I have a bit of an aversion to craft knives. But my crafty friend Andy (who helped me out with my quilled cupcake shop) reminded me of my stamping days by telling me that I could repurpose old wine corks and use them as stamps. Oh boy... another obsession. She made me a cupcake one that I use in some of my packaging but I had to give it a go. I want to share with you all how easy and fun it is. So, here we go: You will need: A bunch of corks. (Use the spongiest ones you have. If it's too dry it will crumble.) A sharpie, one thin and one thick (depends on your design). They sell them with dual-tips! A VERY sharp and good craft knife (I used Andy's X-acto - she lives upstairs and she is mad cool like that) Start off by drawing your design on with the Sharpie I started off with a heart because it's easy. Cut around your shape by sticking the knife in about 1/4 inch down. It's a small "puncture" move. No slicing. You want to sort of ease the knife down and around the design little by little. (Of course you will do this in the correct direction. I was actually cutting and I stopped to snap the pic so the knife is upside-down.) After you cut around the whole design you will now slice into the cork sideways about 1/4 of an inch down. Do not hack into it. It is cork so it may crumble. Slowly slice in a back and forth motion all around the design. Don't cut under the design, just around. If you happen to cut too deep just hack it all off and start over. Now you slowly chip away the excess with your knife. I also used an awl I had to get into more complicated designs. Slow and steady wins the race! Now you test your stamp. I used black ink on all of the designs but you can absolutely use colors. Once you ink it you will see what areas need to be cleaned up and cut more. These stamps won't make pretty and clean designs. (Note the hole in the heart made by an indentation in the cork.) They are very textured and earthy feeling (which I absolutely love). If you're looking for the pretty pristine ones, then you might want to skip out on this. I kept cutting and made more: A cassette! A birdie. My camera design. Made on a larger Prosecco cork. Here they are all inked up and tested. At the end are my cupcake and my name (Sandy). Yes, if you're patient, you can do that, too! Just remember that it has to be backwards or your design will stamp backwards. SWEET Stamping! P.S. My favorite wine is Navarro Correas Malbec. Budget friendly and the perfect companion to a delicious entraña (skirt steak). But don't go cutting your corks after having a bottle! LOL!

Hand carved stamp of bunting or pennet flags
Hi all! So hard to believe we're at Day 11. I'm not going to know what to do with myself after tomorrow...other than clean my house, shop for Christmas presents, and make CHA samples! ;) Today's ornament features quite a few different techniques - things I've wanted to share and things I took a chance experimenting with. I hope you enjoy it. Begin by inserting the largest of the Sized Oval dies into the Cameo Frame. Die cut a piece of medium weight chipboard, creating a frame. Cut another piece, this time without the oval insert, and set aside. Stamp the woodgrain stamp using Gathered Twigs Distress ink and emboss with Walnut Stain Distress Embossing powder. Ink over the embossed area with Gathered Twigs. I love this wood effect! I was inspired to try this technique after seeing cork stickers. I was like, heck, I have cork, stamps, and framelits - I can make my own! Stamp the image with StazOn and die cut. The cork I used cut just fine. If yours it a little thicker, you might have to trim part of it with scissors. Next, take the frame that you cut earlier and trim off the edge along the score line. Paint with several coats of chalkboard paint. When the paint is completely dry, stamp with chalk ink. Use a Fantastix pen (love these things!) to smudge the ink, so that it looks hand drawn. Dry it with a heat gun to set. To finish the ornament, adhere the frame to the chalkboard piece. Tie a length of Striped Paper String around the deer's neck and add a Tidings Token. Adhere die cut holly leaves to the bottom of the frame and attach the deer using foam dots. Attach two Ring Fasteners to the top and tie with ribbon that's been dyed with Festive Berries Distress Stain. Finally, lightly sand the back of a Mirrored Star to give it a vintage look and glue to the ornament as shown. I hope you enjoyed this technique-filled ornament! I love the look of the chalkboard combined with the wood frame - perfect for my woodland tree theme. And even though this stamp/framelit set seems to be discontinued, there are lots more that would be perfect for the die cut cork technique. Hello! I hope you all had a great day! It was hot here today...very hot. 42+ degrees C (or about 108 F) with the humidity. The boys played outside a bit this morning but by this afternoon it was WAY too hot! We did however go to see Madagascar 3 with them late afternoon. Caleb loved it...Jacob got bored! Go figure! Okay, another sneak peek at some new Holiday Catalogue goodies. Unfortunately my picture does not do the new Champagne glimmer paper justice. It's just beautiful and more coppery to me than champagne but none the less! I also love the new buttons...The metallic colour is so perfect for fall! It's also hard to tell from this picture but the leaf is embossed with the new Early Espresso Embossing Powder! Oh and don't forget my favourite...the new Woodgrain Textured Embossing Folder. This week's CAS-ual Friday's challenge card is to create a Clean and Simple card using "Text". I think my maple leaf qualifies perfectly! Supplies: Cardstock: Early Espresso, Very Vanilla, Champagne Glimmer Stamps: Wonderfall, Falling Leaves (retired) Ink: Early Espresso, Versamark Other: Woodgrain Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, Autumn Accents Bigz Die, Brushed Bronze Designer Buttons, Early Espresso Bakers Twine, Early Espresso Embossing Powder, Dimensionals Thanks for stopping by! I'll be back tomorrow with another Holiday Sneak Peek card! Jen
