This resource is designed to give students hands-on practice sorting four types of figurative language seen in the novel, The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart: 1) Simile; 2) Metaphor; 3) Personification; and 4) Hyperbole. How To Use This Resource: First, cut out the Header and Figurative Language Cards. (You may choose to laminate them or print them out on cardstock to increase durability.) Have students sort the Figurative Language Cards into the respective categories under the Header Cards. Answers could be checked by the teacher or by the students themselves, using the answer key that is included. Here, students explain the literal and figurative meanings of the example, use it in an original sentence, and illustrate it. Ways to Differentiate: Students work independently or in pairs Choose which Header Cards to use (with or without the definitions) Focus on only two figurative language types at a time Complete the sort as a shared activity where the teacher guides the learning This Resource Includes: an About This Resource page a Common Core-Alignment page 4 Header Cards with definitions 4 Header Cards without definitions 28 Figurative Language Cards with excerpts from the text Answer Key BONUS: 4 Figurative Language Extension Activity Sheets NOTE: Students DO NOT have to be familiar with the text to work with this resource!
