Part of developing responsibility is understanding how choices have consequences, both good and bad. This lesson plan includes several activities to use with middle-upper elementary students to help them recognize the impact of their choices and become more responsible decision makers. Pick and choose which activities to use in your lesson or small group to meet the needs and levels of your students! *This lesson is also available as part of my Responsibility Lesson Plan Bundle.* This resource includes: • Written lesson plan with ASCA mindsets/behaviors and CASEL competencies • Optional hook using Kid President’s “Making Tough Choices” video • Two fill in the blank activity sheets • Two different puzzle sets (two piece: choice to consequence, four piece: scenario to three consequences) • “I Have, Who Has” game • Exit ticket ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors Demonstrate critical-thinking skills to make informed decisions Demonstrate ethical decision making and social responsibility CASEL (Social Emotional Learning) Competencies Self-Management Responsible Decision Making Resource Rationale Children need to understand that there are consequences (good and/or bad) to every choice that we make. This resource helps them make the connection by providing numerous examples and differentiated opportunities to practice their understanding independently or in small groups. The puzzles provide for an hands-on/tactile approach while the fill in the blanks push students to think deeper and more creatively. How to Use This Resource This resource works in both whole group guidance lessons or small group sessions for students grades 2nd-5th. If using the puzzles, you may choose to select the ones most applicable to your group. The materials included in this resource are enough to spread over the course of 2 lessons/sessions if desired. ✨Glowing Praise for This Resource✨ “My students loved this interactive activity! I'm a middle school counselor and I teach one class to a group of 8th graders each quarter called Leadership and Careers. This lesson fit in perfectly with the leadership aspect when we talked about what it means to be impulsive, be a follower vs. a leader, think before we act / speak, etc. It was wonderful! [...] Great activity and would highly recommend!” ~Allison R. “This was a very helpful resource to use in my classroom counseling lessons and it created a lot of great discussion. Students really liked finding the "choice" and "consequence" cards that matched as they moved around the classroom.” ~Kate H. Open up the preview for more details!

Coping strategies are important skills for kids and young adults to learn. These are the activities and strategies we use to help us calm down when we're emotionally overwhelmed. We can probably all think of a few kids and young adults who need extra practice managing their emotions effectively! Tha
Use this coping strategies toolbox lesson and craft activity set to help teach about coping skills to manage tough emotions. All kids and young adults should have a "toolbox" of strategies to help them manage their emotions and stress. In this lesson, you will teach students what coping strategies are, discuss which strategies might work best for each individual, and make a toolbox craft to store the coping strategies they choose. Materials also include practice for deciding which coping strategy to use and a log to keep track of which strategies are used at different times. Why Teach Coping Strategies Coping strategies are any activity that can help calm emotions and stress. Kids and young adults may often experience difficult emotions but do not have appropriate coping strategies for dealing with those feelings. Just some of the coping strategies discussed and practiced within this activity include: listening to music, taking a walk, coloring, deep breathing, using positive self-talk, talking to a friend, and writing in a journal. Students can also add their own individualized coping strategies. Lesson and Activity This resource includes a four-part lesson. You can do the entire lesson all at once or break it up, as needed. Activity 1: Students will read about coping strategies to learn about what they are and why they are important. Activity 2: Students will read through a list to identify which coping strategies they may want to use. Students will have time to discuss and practice each strategy. Activity 3: Students will create a "Coping Strategies Toolbox" craft. They will fill their toolbox with the coping strategies of their choice. Activity 4: Students will use a worksheet to discuss various situations. In each situation, students will decide which coping strategy they might use and explain why. Follow-up: Students will use the "My Coping Strategies Tracker" to record when they use a coping strategy after a tough emotion or situation. Some of the strategies include: • Use positive self-talk • Write in a journal • Take a walk • Listen to music • Color or draw • Talk to someone • Read • Make a list of choices • And many more! Note that versions are included for students to create their own coping strategies not listed. Black/white and color versions are also included. The difference between Private and Not-So-Private, body parts, can be difficult for children with social learning challenges to understand. This Social Skills Story & Activity set uses direct, explicit language. It breaks down targeted skills into small, manageable steps. This story discusses the "private" and "not-so-private" body parts on a boy. It also discusses who can touch your body and when, as well as what to do if someone touches you who should not. Explicit stories are a great way to teach children important skills that they are finding challenging. Social Skills Stories teach children what they should and should not do in a specific situation, such as, understanding what body parts are private/not-so-private. To further support students, I have created Skill Builder Activities. Skill Builder Activities help support the targeted skill(s) to promote generalization. ❤️❤️❤️ What people are saying about this product: "Love this. Teaching procedures and rules the first weeks of school is so important! This back to school resource contains tips, activities, and printables to help you introduce, teach, and reinforce your classroom rules and procedures. Note: The back to school activities are now available in digital versions as well! See pages 3-4 of the PDF for the details and links. Click here to see all of my Back to School resources. This back-to-school resource includes the following printables and activities for teaching rules and procedures: General Information and Tips for Creating Rules and Procedures List of Suggested Classroom Procedures to Teach General Steps for Introducing and Teaching Procedures Link to Editable Classroom Procedures Task Cards Looks Like/Sounds Like: Use this T-Chart to have the students take a classroom rule or procedure and list some ideas of how this rule looks and sounds like. This is a powerful tool in helping them understand how to follow the rule or procedures. Do’s and Don’ts: This is very similar to the above activity. Use the T Chart to have the students describe what you DO to follow the rule or procedure and what you DON’T do. iPhone Apps: This is a fun and creative way to have the students think of the class rules. The students create an iPhone app for each class rule. They design a button and a title for each rule. I have included a bulletin board poster if you would like to make a display of this. **Printable Only Scenarios: 22 different classroom scenarios involving rules and procedures. Each scenario also has guiding questions for the students to answer. Teaching the Procedures: Cut out each square and give each pair or group a procedure to teach the rest of the class. I have included a blank grid so you can include additional procedures to fit your needs. Teaching Special Procedures: A printable for students to record drill procedures. Class Rules Book: Template to have your students make a simple book containing the rules of the classroom. Have the students write the rule, then rewrite it in their words, then illustrate the rule. Good Choice or Poor Choice: You Decide!: This can be done whole group, with small groups, or with partners. The students cut out the behavior cards, read them, decide if the circumstance is showing a good choice or poor choice, and then sort them correctly. I have also included a blank page for the students to create their own behavior cards. Write About It!: A writing prompt about a day without rules and directions. Read About It! A paired story set for discussing what school would be like without procedures. One story depicts a day in a classroom without procedures and one depicts a day in a classroom with procedures. About the Digital Rules and Procedures Activities •The digital rules and procedures activities are also included for use with Google Slides. Click here for a step-by-step guide for assigning Google Slides in Google Classroom. *The checklist is in Google Sheets. *The content for the digital activities is the SAME as the printable activities. Are you looking to change up your meet the counselor lessons? Try incorporating The Meet the Counselor Files! This interactive activity is a great tool to keep your students engaged as you talk about your role in your school. The Meet the Counselor Files includes a sheet to make the folder for either a male or a female counselor. The Savvy Files are a series of “file” activities focusing on various topics. They are great for classroom lessons, small group counseling or individual counseling. Both Primary and Intermediate versions of files and pamphlets are included in this product. The pamphlet version of The Meet the Counselor Files provides a non-cutting option. These files may be used as an activity to keep students engaged during your discussion. When completed, it becomes an excellent document to share what you do with parents.. It’s also a good time to discuss confidentiality and share the three times you must get help. (Someone wants to hurt you, you want to hurt someone, or you want to hurt yourself) Intermediate grades will write these on the “What” tab. You may choose to have your students do the cutting or you can pre-cut and prepare the files for your students ahead of your lesson Here’s what other counselors have said: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Amanda S.. said - I really like that there are two different versions of this activity. I used the simpler one for 1st grade and the more complex one for 3rd grade. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Kacie G.. said - I used this for all classes since I am new to the school. I wanted to make sure all kids got the same information on my job (and most importantly the secrets that I CANT keep). I cut and made all 400....took me a while, but it was worth it for the price. Teachers said their students loved it and loved that that had a fun way to take information home! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Stacey T. said - I love that this has a primary and an intermediate version. Thank you! This pack is included in the The Savvy Files Bundle. Please be sure to FOLLOW ME for alerts about my new product listings! If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me so I can do my best to help. Have you found Behavior RTI to just be overwhelming? Use this system to provide behavior interventions, document and graph behaviors/interventions using google forms for Tier 1-3, train your staff, and implement a complete, yet simple behavior RTI process. You can also use the data you receive from google forms as meaningful data to determine what may be causing the behavior, which behaviors occur most frequently, the types of interventions being implemented, and how the student is responding to the interventions. Google forms graphs the data that comes in so all you have to do is print your RTI evidence (no extra work on your part to graph the interventions being implemented). Our school district just adopted this exact Behavior RTI process, created by School Counselor World! It's that good! :-) This product contains: *Implementation Procedures {EDITABLE} *Behavior Flow Chart *Interventions Resource *Links to Pre-Created Google Forms for Tiers 1, 2, and 3 {EDITABLE} *Screenshots of Directions on How to Implement Google Forms *Tier Determination Form {EDITABLE} *Goal Development & Progress Monitoring Form {EDITABLE} www.schoolcounselorworld.com Check out our curriculum map!!! Raise your hand if your students need to work on better listening. I bet everyone's hands are in the air. I've got both of mine in the air, hence the reason behind this product. Since winter break, I have added FIVE new students to my caseload who are on the autism spectrum, so I have been working over time creating materials for them. I ended up needing A LOT for listening, and when I started working on that, I realized that I needed this for more than just my new students…many of my friends are working on these skills!

Why Teach Social Emotional Learning Skills Social and emotional learning, referred to as SEL, is the process that helps kids and young adults learn critical skills, attitudes, and mindsets for social and emotional success. These skills cover five major areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, and responsible decision-making. It’s actually difficult to describe in just one sentence because SEL covers everything from building confidence and managing emotions to making friends and understanding ethical decision-making skills. These are truly the foundational skills that help kids to be successful in and out of school. Use these low prep SEL, behavior and social skills printable worksheets and activities to help teach your students how to control their behavior and reactions to everyday social situations. Incorporate into SEL social emotional lessons using hands on learning with task cards activities to teach students the social consequences of their words and actions. Available in both printable and digital format. Description Often, students with Autism and other social skills deficits struggle to understand the direct and indirect impact that their behavior has on other people. When we engage in behaviors that make people have negative thoughts about us, that in turn also affects the way other people interact and treat us (eg, if I make someone mad by pushing them if they touch my things, that person will then have negative thoughts about me and will more than likely not want to be my friend……Or if I’m playing basketball and do not pass the ball to anyone because I think I’m the best player, other kids will probably not want me to be on their team next time). A lot of students can identify punishment consequences associated with negative behaviors (eg loss of privileges, time out, sent to the principal’s office etc), however identifying the SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES is a much more difficult and abstract concept for our students to grasp. *****Activities within this packet are available as printables and digital/paperless available as both digital PDFS, interactive powerpoints and google slides (google slides to be downloaded into your google drive) ***** This product can also be found within my social skills BUNDLE packet. Social skills and behavior bundle The google slides only version of this packet can be found here: How my behavior affects others google slides This packet is designed to teach students with social skill deficits to identify how different actions may affect other people’s feelings/emotions (both positive and negative emotions) and then possible SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES that may be experienced as a result of making others feel that way. The packet is broken down into 3 key components: Part 1- Use of worksheets and activities to teach the concept about how actions affect others, as well as identify the correct/incorrect way to handle a situation. Part 2- An interactive activity that involves 408 different scenario cards. Students read the cards and select how the action described in the scenarios would make other feels. This can be completed as a game with multiple students or as a 1:1 interactive teaching method. Students are encouraged to think about why the scenario would make others feel a certain emotion, social consequences experienced as a result of those feelings, and then different solutions if the action resulted in negative emotions/consequences. Part 3- Data tracking and behavior change goals- Once students are able to identify actions they engage in that may make others have negative thoughts, goals can be set and tracked (using student self monitoring data) to encourage more appropriate actions. Specifically, in this packet you will find: Part 1- Understanding how different actions affect others (worksheets and activities) -3 Emotions posters, both in color and black and white. . .
