am bringing this back around for the Digging in the Archives Tuesday group pool for january 13, 2015. some of the back story for our local heroine is below......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ deborah sampson is our local hometown heroine. she enlisted in the revolutionary army, dressed as a man under the name of robert shurtleff. she fought until she was wounded and her masquerade was discovered. honorably discharged, she received a soldier's pension from the new US gov't. this statue is in front of the library and she often dons seasonally appropriate attire like this scarf. nope, it wasn't me who put it there ~grin~.......... the plaque at her feet credits the sculptor, lu stubbs, and gives the date 1989. scavchal #16 monument (and, with this one, i am done. mosaic to follow)
