FREE Call Backs and attention getters for the kindergarten classroom! Great classroom management tool!

All right, all right, I know spring break doesn't happen for a couple more weeks for most of us, but I am getting ready to start preparing my students already! Like most kids with autism, my students struggle with change in their routine. Well, school IS their routine. My kids love coming to school... they love the structure and they know exactly what to expect, for the most part, each day. When my kids saw the March calendar with an ENTIRE week of "no school," some of them seemed a little nervous. We talk about spring break while we do calendar every morning, but I also like to send home this social story to help parents explain spring break to their children. A couple years ago, I had a parent call me over winter break because her son was threatening to run away to go back to school and she didn't know what to do. I told her to use the calendar to show him how many days of break were left and start a "count down" for going back to school (it worked and he didn't run away ☺) He just didn't understand the concept of that many days off. I also created this little worksheet for the kids to complete over spring break. I figured it would help them talk about their spring break when we came back to school. You can get both of these FREEBIES here. I like to take pictures of the things I do on spring break as well to share with the kids. This is a snapshot of little booklet I put together to share with my kids a couple years ago!

Use this activity sheet for an after spring break recap! Students can fill in pictures of things they did or places they went and then write a short sentence about it! After that, have them switch papers and “repin” an event that someone else did. They can explain why they chose to “repin” that pin in a short paragraph. Paste them both on a large black piece of paper and hang around the room! Not looking to use this for spring break?! No worries, grab an editable one here: Editable PINTERESTING activity

Am I the only one who is ready for this Winter to be over? Spring Break is right around the corner and we still have freezing temperatures here!! This week we have been looking at the ugly, freezing, dark skies and rain. We wanted to turn it into something beautiful! Begin with a white crayon and draw the horizon line. there should be a big emphasis on drawing OVALS instead of circles. Students figured out that you can see the white crayon BETTER when the paper in on their stool UNDER the table! So I let them draw on their stools! Can you see the white crayon in the picture? Some students added a rainbow, lightning bolt or other details Then I swiped the ENTIRE paper with a wet rag to begin the wet on wet watercolor I used Sargent Liquid Watercolor Magic for this. I use it ALOT because of the vibrant colors. We used turquoise, Blue, and black Ovals should be very small at the top of the horizon, but gradually get larger as they go down the page. Use a straight edge for the rain drops. The must TOUCH each puddle First, paint some large blue "blobs" on your paper. Then paint around the blue with black and watch it blend with the blue and the wet paper!! I have some siblings at my school working on a special project and they painted the background with the rain idea and it turned out great! Here is a link to the kind of watercolors I use for EVERYTHING! There are different sizes if you want a smaller set. You can put them in muffin tins or ice cube trays on the tables. You can see the link " liquid watercolors" on the sidebar to see many other projects I have used these with
Spring Break is so great! But the only downfall about it is the Sunday before you have to go back...which for me, is today. (super sad face) I've been trying to stay positive. We only have 12 weeks left until summer, I can officially start a countdown, my firsties should be refreshed coming back tomorrow, and this time of the year is the greatest...it's only downhill from here! I love hearing all the stories about what the kids got to do over the break. Instead of them telling me, I like for them to practice their writing skills while all the fun thoughts roam through their head. I whipped this up for us to use tomorrow morning. I like to give them a little while to write in the morning then I let them find 2 friends to share their news with. This is the part they love! It's up in my TpT shop for FREE! Just click on the picture above and it will take you straight there! For those of you getting spring break this week, enjoy it! It will go by way.too.fast!
Maybe I should’ve just titled this post “Longest Post Ever”, because that’s pretty much what it’s gonna be. You can abandon reading now and I swear I wouldn’t blame you! HA!. First of all, I just want to say “thank you” to all of you who emailed to make sure I’m okay! I know I …

March Madness has something to do with basketball, right?? It makes me think of the countdown till spring break and how quickly the days pass after it. I told someone today that being in my class was like heaven on earth. They are so wonderful, I can't even think about June when they will leave me for grander horizons. I need it all to slow down! Saw this wonderful idea on Pinterest and knew I had to use it: I couldn't find the original person that uploaded it but kudos to whoever you are :) Mine is a bit simple but you could print it on colored paper. We are starting to select our goals during conferences tomorrow! Get yours below :) Writing Goals, Conventions Writing Goals, Traits Trait Posters by:Edina Public Schools Writing Trait Posters I've been working on a guided reading instruction pack. It came about when I was trying to share it all with my intern. It's hard model and talk about all the ins and outs. We all know that it is overwhelming to begin and follow through with! The pack I created has a checklist of materials needed, helpful hints about grouping students, a chart to schedule time for each group, running record forms, ways to analyze a running record, daily note page for each group, record log for individuals, and a format to follow when working with students. It's far from perfect but a quick and dirty overview to get started. Guided Reading pack Here are pictures from my classroom that explain my set up: These are my guided reading books. All the copies are in one bag and filed under their level. You will notice I wrote various levels on the books because it seems that everything differs. My school uses the Guided Reading levels develop by Fountas and Pinnell. The baskets are leveled. Each level has around six different text selections. The books have the level listed on the back. This set is PM Rigby. In case your school doesn't have the funds for a different series of guided reading books you can always level your readers that go along with your basal. Most of the time they aren't used in a leveled order, they are based of comprehension or phonics strategies. Leveling them helps your readers because it puts just right books in their hands. Here is my binder: I have a schedule in the front and a list of needs for each group. Currently I am working with 2 groups a day and my intern is working with 1 a day. So you may notice I only have 3 groups listed, she is in charge of the other 2 groups;) This is my note taking page. It defintely helps with planning effective lessons. Goals for the following week based of noticings. Leveling guide in front pocket developed for our school's needs. Running Record cues in the back pocket. Bins for each group with books to reread and new reads, writing journal for each child and a couple other things based off the needs of the group {2 bins are stashed behind}. Whiteboards, fluency rubric, easy button and bell for clean up warning. Back of easel that is used for word work. Large book covers make great seat sacks for whisper phones because each kid is reading at their own pace. Running records organized by level. What the individual bags look like...several copies of the running record and one book. Knowing that the pace of school-life would pick up as soon as we got back in swing after our leisurely spring break, I spent a couple hours in the classroom on Sunday putting up a chalkboard drawing. Though drawing has often been a struggle for me, I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. […]
