A FUN take-home activity for your speech therapy students! Speech therapy in a bag! This activity is super easy to prep, all black and white (no color ink!), and crafty without being messy. Speech in a bag was designed for my students as a home practice activity for winter break, but it can be used any time of the year! **You will need bags. Either small brown paper lunch bags or standard sized sandwich zip-top plastic bags will work well** Included in download: • Directions/ cover page • Cards to put in the bag (articulation and language skills! - see below for more details) • Bag labels (to stick on outside of bag) INCLUDES CARDS FOR THE FOLLOWING: ARTICULATION: Sounds included: • Earlier Developing: P, B, M, K, F, V, L, R, S-blends (all in the initial position of words) • Later Developing: S, Z, CH, SH, J, TH (all word positions - initial, medial, and final) • Labeled sets of picture articulation cards (10 cards per sound) plus a “draw your own” card for earlier developing sounds • Word cards (36 cards per sound) with just the typed word - no clipart - for later developing sounds! This makes the activity seem more "grown up" to my older articulation students! LANGUAGE: • Categories (naming items in a category) • Past tense verbs (regular and irregular) • Plural nouns (regular and irregular) • Pronouns • Sequencing (short stories for re-telling) • Social Behaviors (identification of acceptable vs. unacceptable social behaviors) • Synonyms • Antonyms • Compare and Contrast • Idioms and Idiom Meanings How it works: • Pass out sets of cards based on the skill you are working on and instruct students to decorate them (with crayons or markers) and cut them out. Note: Some of the cards don't have pictures (like the sequencing story cards or compare and contrast) but student can still color in the bubble letters or background of the card while they practice. • Put the set of cards in a bag. • Attach the label with directions on the bag (using a stapler, glue, or tape) and send home with student for practice with their parents! Additional Articulation Fun: I like to send home a 2nd bag with my students and have them fill it with small items from around the house that contain their speech sound. Then, when they return with the bag, we practice our sound as they tell me about all of the items they have brought in! I love using my No Frills Articulation products. I keep them all in a binder and am able to flip through to the pages I need quickly. They are so great to pull out when I need some quick sentences to use when playing a board game that students have chosen, or when I have a quick articulation student that I only see for 5 minutes. Tangible Object Symbols for Spring Weather Sun: I used a round tap light for $1 from the Dollar Store (you have to add 3 AAA batteries) with bright yellow foam (99c) cut outs in the shape of a Sun. I felt it would stand out better on a dark background so mounted it on thick back foam core. Child can push the sun on and off. If you have a battery interrupter, you could hook the Sun up to a switch and have the child turn it on and off that way. I also used sparkly bright blue paper (99c a sheet) to make the rain drops. I would pair this with a rain stick and have the child listen to the sound. For another sensory idea, use a misting spray bottle to make it gently "rain" so the child can feel it. The Umbrella Song words Down come the rain drops SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH! (stamp feet on the splashes) Let’s run for cover, DASH, DASH, DASH! (run on the spot) Pitter patter, pitter patter, DRIP, DRIP, DROP! Attach ribbon to the fan to make is more visibly interesting. I love watching these little ones learn and explore language right before my (and often time, mom's) eyes! The best part? Therapy involves lots and lots of toys! Recently I have noticed a lot of posts in Facebook groups where other SLPs are asking, "What's in your therapy bag?" or "What are your go-to items for therapy with early intervention kids?" I always end up following these posts because like other therapists, I want to know what you use. I am always looking for new, fun toys that will elicit more language! So, I decided to create a blog post about what I have in my bag. I am making this a linky party so you can link-up and check out what other SLPs have in their "Bag of Tricks," too! First up, Shape Sorter This colorful shape sorter can be used to work on so many concepts: colors, shapes, matching, same/different, stacking, in/out concepts, following directions… to name a few! I have also started co-treating with an occupational therapist on our team and learned how important toys like the can be to work on crossing mid-line and other motor goals. When this toy is a hit, I often pair it with this free Fisher-Price app: Laugh & Learn Another must-have in my bag is, Baby Einstein books! Books in general are good, however, there is something about these Baby Einstein books that just draw kids in. I received some of these books at my daughter's baby shower and by the time she was 3 months old, she was drawn to these books. I love using them for receptive and expressive vocabulary. I haven't met a kid yet that doesn't love a good ole See 'n Say! These are great for teaching animals and the sounds they make, but also great for imitation and sound discrimination. Going along with the animal theme, I also love using a Farm House! This doesn't necessarily fit inside my therapy bag well, but it's on my must-have list. These farm houses bring out a lot of language while you role play taking care of the animals, learn animal names, practice requesting, work on prepositions (the horse is "on" the barn, the chicken is "in the nest"), and more. Another favorite of mine, although not always one of mom's, is Play-Doh! My 2 year old daughter is in a giant Play-Doh phase right now, which is what inspired this to be a part of my bag. In addition to talking about the colors and how it feels, I love using the molds or baking tools to work on following directions. Play-Doh is another great tool to work on requesting with. A huge fan favorite for most of my students, is Toy Food I love the Melissa & Doug products, but any kind of plastic/wooden, fake food is fine. Again, this is a great tool to use for requesting, following directions, sorting, role playing, etc. I like to pair the fake food with Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head and have a picnic! I also love using this with my feeding therapy/food aversion clients. Letting them have fun with food, pretend cook, and feed other toys, helps take away the tension that meal time often brings for them.
