Pithecellobium dulce, commonly known as the Manila tamarind or sweet tamarind, is a tropical tree native to regions in South Asia and Northern Australia. This small to medium-sized evergreen tree is known for its spreading canopy and pinnately compound leaves that provide ample shade. The fruit of the Pithecellobium dulce tree is particularly popular and resembles tamarind, with a sweet and tangy flavor. The fruits are encased in a hard, woody pod, and the edible pulp is enjoyed fresh, in desserts, or as a snack. The tree's fragrant, cream-colored flowers add to its ornamental appeal. Pithecellobium dulce is a hardy, drought-tolerant species, making it adaptable to a variety of soil types and well-suited to tropical and subtropical climates. Zones 10-11 Germination Germinating Pithecellobium dulce, commonly known as Manila tamarind, from seeds, can be achieved through several key steps. Before planting, scarify the seeds by carefully nicking the hard outer seed coat, which can be done with a file or by soaking the seeds in hot water for a few minutes. This scarification will help improve germination rates by allowing water to penetrate the seed coat. Next, plant the seeds in a well-draining potting mix, sowing them about 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the pot or container in a warm and sunny location with temperatures around 75-85°F (24-29°C). Germination usually occurs within a few weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough and have several sets of leaves, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden, where they will grow into Manila tamarind trees with their sweet and tangy fruit.
