I've mentioned on my family blog how I love turning old clothes into new clothes so why not do that with furniture? While packing up the house, I was staring at H's bed and decided I didn't like it anymore. We bought the IKEA Malm bed off craigslist when we lived in GA because we were desperate to own a bed and the space we had was really tiny. Jeremy said No so reluctantly, I took the bed apart dreading to rebuild it in the new house. That was until I got the newest edition of Pottery Barn Kids and came across the prettiest bed. In case you didn't know, I'm a sucker for nail head trim and crystal chandeliers. This bed was perfect for my vision and then I got to brainstorming... I had J run to the hardware store for me after I spent the night with a glass of wine, a box top, pen and my conversion calculator. I had a queen sized bed so I needed some plywood 66.5" long and 18" high. I also need lots of screw, staples for my gun and some L-brackets. Meanwhile, I ran to the fabric store and bought 4.75 yards of fabric a 5 yards of 2" batting and some silver nail head trim. Here's what I did: 1) I attached 4 L-brackets to the plywood 2) Then I screwed the plywood to the headboard 3)I carefully laid the headboard down being attentive to the brackets making sure not to bend them. I took some left over plywood and placed it on the front of the headboard to secure it a little better. 4)Once that was screwed in place, I cut the 2" batting to fit the headboard and secured it with a few staples so it didn't move while I measured the rest of the batting to fit 5)I attached a second row of batting, making sure to cut out a space for the side rails to attach later 6)Next, I took my fabric a stapled it to the bottom of the headboard where it would be covered by the mattress. I proceeded to staple the fabric as I pulled it tightly to get a nice even look 7)I carefully folded up the corners like a present and stapled them 8)Then I nailed the trim in place 9) I did the same thing with the foot board 10)I also covered the side rails but did not use batting. Instead, I had to be careful getting under the slight ledge on the side. PRESTO!!! My $2000 pottery barn bed 4 hours and a blister later for $100! Stay tuned to see the bed in the room with bedding once paint dries in the room here in a few days!

Mindful eating, the Italian way! After the sweet excesses of the holidays, we like to take the month of January to reset and get back in touch with a more mindful way of eating. It’s something Giada has done for years, and never fails to start the new year off on a positive note. This time of year can bring lots of talk of restrictive diets and a focus on what you can’t eat—that’s not for us. Instead, we’re taking this moment to reconnect with our appetites with a set of simple, good-for-you recipes that follow the traditional Italian way of eating: lots of variety, with a focus on fresh, whole ingredients. This month, we’re making the most of good, simple foods, with plenty of seasonal veggies, grains, and easy-to-prepare proteins. And yes, there’s still room for pasta! No self-respecting Italian would ever cut it out entirely. Basically, if it’s something Giada’s nonna would have eaten, it’s on our list. Bookmark this page to come back to it as you plan your meals for the month, or stop by whenever you want a little healthy inspiration. These recipes will take you through the day the Italian way, and leave you feeling happier, healthier, and more in touch with yourself, too. BREAKFAST: Wake Up Right A good day starts with a good breakfast, and while the typical Italian favorite of cappuccino and a pastry is delicious, it doesn’t do much for your blood sugar. These satisfying recipes are high in protein with lots of healthy whole grains to fill you up and give you long-lasting energy to get through the day. LUNCH: Waste-free Lunches Wasting food is a cardinal sin in any Italian household—and when the dinners are this delicious, having leftovers for lunch is never a chore. Giada’s mom and nonna always repurposed leftovers into creative lunches, turning cold spaghetti into pasta pizza, roasted veggies into hearty grain salads, and cooked chicken into warming soups in a snap. DINNER: Versatile Dinners Family dinners that are healthy, filling, and crowd-pleasing? They’re all right here! This collection of hearty meals has something for every palate, from seafood-focused to plant-based to satisfying meat dishes. SIDES: Super Sides Bright salads, flavorful veggies, and satisfying small plates are perfect to round out any meal. Mix-and-match a few for a colorful vegetarian dinner. Or, for a quick-and-easy weeknight meal, pair a simple protein like Giada’s lemon and oregano pounded chicken or Tuscan pork chops with one of these appealing side dishes. SAUCES: Choose-your-own Flavor Boost Got a go-to meal you already have down to a science? Stocked up on a sale at the grocery store? These versatile sauces can top readymade salads, spice up a simple protein, or give a new twist to a favorite recipe. Just whip up a batch and keep in the fridge for whenever you need it. SWEETS: Dreamy Dolci We told you there was room for everything in this plan! It’s just not realistic—or enjoyable—to go a whole month without sweets. These recipes are whole food-based, with just enough sweetness to satisfy without sending you into sugar overload.

Last week I tried something new. I solar dyed bombyx silk cocoons on the deck! I put 12 to 16 silk cocoons per jar and added some water/vinegar/Basic H then sprinkled dye powder into the jar, screwed the lid on and gently tilted the jar back and forth several times to mix the dye. I then set the jars on black rubber mats on the deck, covered them with a black plastic trash bag and left them for 24 hours. At the end of the 24 hours the dye solution was almost completely exhausted and the cocoons were dyed beautifully! I rinsed the cocoons and set them out on a sweater rack dryer on the deck to dry. I think they came out awesome. I dyed seven different colors: Turquoise, Gun Metal, Emerald Green, Pumpkin Gold, Purple, Navy Blue and Rusty Red. For decorative display or degum them and gently pull the silk threads from the end of the cocoon to get a long length of silk thread for spinning, paper making or embellishment. For a wonderful article on silkworms and degumming them: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATbombyx.html Information on the Silkworm: The silkworm (Bombyx mori, Latin: "silkworm of the mulberry tree") is the larva or caterpillar of a moth in the family Bombycidae, that is very important economically as the producer of silk. It is entirely dependent on humans for its reproduction and no longer occurs in the wild; silk culture has been practised for at least 5,000 years in China (Goldsmith et al., 2004). A silkworm's diet consists solely of mulberry leaves. It is native to northern China. The cocoon is made of a single continuous thread of raw silk from 300 to 900 meters (1000 to 3000 feet) long. The fibers are very fine and lustrous, about 10 micrometers (1/2500th of an inch) in diameter. About 2,000 to 3,000 cocoons are required to make a pound of silk. If the larvae is allowed to survive after spinning its cocoon, it will make a hole in the cocoon when it exits as a moth. This would cut short the threads and ruin the silk. Instead, silkworm cocoons are boiled. The heat kills the silkworms and the water makes the cocoons easier to unravel. These cocoons still have the silkworm larvae inside. These beautiful solar dyed bombyx silk cocoons are available in my Etsy store. Available in each of the seven colors with six cocoons per bag or a variety pack with one of each of all seven colors and as a bag of six cocoons - three Navy blue and three Emerald Green and as a bag of seven cocoons - four Purple and three Pumpkin Gold.

We have followed the same chore schedule for about a year now. It has worked well for us. The kids don't flip over their chore cards anymore, they know them by heart and we just have a rhythm to how it all works. But lately, I sensed my three needed a little boost. I wanted something that made chores happen quickly each morning, without me reminding them to get it done. I wanted them to get a little excited, and help them see there is blessing in work and obedience. So, now we have marbles. In the Back to School 2009 issue of Family Fun Magazine, I read a great article about chore rewards called, "A Fistful of Dad Dollars," where the kids had dad dollars waiting for them each morning on the counter if everything was completed by a certain time. And the most recent issue of Family Fun offered another creative way to handle chore boredom using jars of marbles. So, I married the two ideas. While I liked the dad dollar idea (you print real looking money with dad's face in the middle), I knew the boys would not keep track of slips of paper. How it works for us: Do your daily chores and receive marbles. Their morning chores have to be completed by a certain time to receive the marbles (I give them a 30 minute warning to help my non-clock readers). Also, good table manners at dinner can earn you a couple marbles. I don't take marbles out of their jars for any reason. Discipline issues are completely separate. My hope is to keep this light and fun, not burdensome. With morning/evening chores and table manners each of them can earn up to six marbles, and sometimes more. When Will told me today that he matched all the white socks that were piled on my bed (seemingly just for fun), I happily blessed him with a couple extra marbles. The kids then get to spend their marbles on some fun privileges. Here are a few examples... and most are divisible by 3 - in case they want to pull together to buy something... a late night reading pass (extra reading time in bed) - 10 marbles 30 minutes of screen time (computer or tv) - 12 marbles a trip to the playground/hike of your choice - 15 marbles treat at the pool snack bar - 15 marbles after dinner bike ride - 18 marbles out for ice cream - 30 marblesWe are only a few weeks into this and they love it. I am always thinking of things they can do to earn a marble or spend marbles... and they are, too.
