My students are really enjoying the activities and are asking more questions which leads to greater discussion. I highly recommend!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Heather C. said, "This resource is FANTASTIC. I am super excited to give this entire course a go in the spring. Be aware that this is a lot of material, so it may take a little bit to digest it all. Once you know where to look for the materials, it gets easier to put together. I'm currently in the process of putting a teacher notebook together so that I have something to show the kids, and I cannot be any more pleased with the quality and content included in this bundle. I no longer am nervous to teach this course as putting this together makes me feel much more confident (and competent) to successfully teach Sociology." This sociology and culture activity centers around the classic anthropological satire “Body Rituals among the Nacirema.” The satire, film clips, and reading in the activity encourage sociology, anthropology, or cultural studies students to apply cultural relativism as opposed to ethnocentrism when studying unfamiliar cultures. The final step in this activity reveals who the Nacirema are and encourages students to begin making “the strange familiar and the familiar strange.” This resource is also a part of: ➪ Sociology and Culture Interactive Notebook Complete Unit ➪ Sociology Interactive Notebook Mega Bundle--A Complete Curriculum ★How to get TPT credit to use on future purchases★ ♦ Go to your My Purchases page. Teaching ethos, pathos, and logos is paramount for older students. They should understand these famous persuasive techniques to better their speeches and papers. When teaching rhetorical analysis, you will also cover ethos, pathos, and logos. This bundle demonstrates examples of ethos, pathos, and logos with commercials and asks students to analyze how these incorporations persuade audiences. As a culminating activity, students will sort topics into their best label: ethos, pathos, or logos. Included in this ethos, pathos, and logos activity: ✓ Power point: covers the definitions of ethos, pathos, and logos; examines audiences; includes four (clean, school-appropriate) commercials links. ✓ Questions: includes analysis of each commercial through the persuasive techniques. ✓ Culminating questions (can be done alone or in groups): ask students to evaluate and judge the best incorporation of the persuasive techniques, and to apply the knowledge to their speaking and writing. ✓ A "sort." The topics are editable. Print and cut the pieces, and ask students to sort the speech topics into an ethos, pathos, or logos pile. Ask them to defend their answers. Suggestions for use are included. I have coached a speech team for four years as well as taught a public speaking class for seven years. I have used commercials to emphasize that famous speakers and marketers use exactly what I want students to use: ethos, pathos, and logos. This product is also in the Public Speaking Unit: Impromptu, How-To, Narrative, Informative, and More.
