By now, you all know that I love teaching Social Studies, so it should come as no surprise that when I am teaching other subjects, I find any way I can to throw a little historical connection in. We are now studying about the 13 colonies. We are also doing both geometry and fractions in math. How on earth do I combine the two??? Colonial Quilts! Gorgeous, eh? I am seriously over the moon about how this project turned out. I can't stop looking at it. (the picture above isn't the 100% final product...those loose ends have since been cut off for the end project) So here is what we did. During our social studies block, we read a bunch of books about colonial times, focusing specifically on daily life. After showing the students a few examples of quilts, we brainstormed the qualities they noticed in the quilts themselves (many of them were symmetrical, bright, had repeating patterns, etc...) I then had the students create a 20 cm x 20 cm square (we have cm graph paper available at school). Choosing either 2, 4, or 5 colors, the students created a square that had at least one triangle, quadrilateral, was bright, and symmetrical. During math, we are focusing on area of quadrilaterals and triangles, as well as fractions, decimals and percents. Since they had this knowledge under their belt, it made the actual math portion of this project a *bit* easier. Don't get me wrong, it was still tricky, but just challenging enough, without being impossible. Depending upon how many colors the students chose, I gave them a recording sheet to do their work. They first needed to count the number of squares that took up each color....a HUGE challenge, since there were 400 squares! The triangles were tricky, but I modeled extensively how to count the portion of the square that took up each color. Once that was done, the students created fractions, simplified them, then figured out the decimal and percent of each individual color that was on the quilt square. Click the picture for recording sheets The students then found the area of one or two of their triangles, followed by the area of one or two of their quadrilaterals. I then laminated the individual squares and put the quilt together using duct tape. I recommend doing this on tile...not wood floors, as the tape will stick to it (I found this out the hard way :( ) Then, pull it up (slowly and carefully), attach it to paper on the back so the tape doesn't stick to anything else, and viola, you have your quilt. So there you have it. A social studies/math connection....that produces and AWESOME final product :) And just in case, here is the duct tape I used. I bought two rolls, which worked out well for the entire quilt of 30 squares.

Hi everyone! First post of 2013! Where has the time gone?! I just realized my last post was December 8th! Time really does fly by! But, I guess I wasn't just lounging around for the past three weeks or so. I have been working really hard on putting my first thematic unit on TPT. I just finished and it feels oh so good!!! It is the best feeling to have a new resource on TPT. (I am sure everyone knows what I mean!) This is the prettier version of the unit I taught for my student teaching. My students LOVED my outer space unit I taught them. I went all out for it! I made an astronaut costume to show the students the parts of a space suit, I bought actual meteorites and let the students hold them, we set off rockets, and much more. Overall, it was a great experience! I think that is probably why I enjoyed making this resource so much. It brought back all the memories of student teaching. I sure miss those kiddos!!! Anyways, as I said, my outer space unit is complete and it is a big one alright. It is a whopping 169 pages. Yup, that's right, 169 pages! One of my new Common Core ELA Units is called "Figure it Out." It is about notable people who overcame challenges to become successful in life. We read about Helen Keller, Leonardo da Vinci, George Washington Carver and Thomas Edison. We created lap-books using an Invention Brochure that I bought on TPT from This Little Piggy Reads. Using 4 slices of apple, students must test different mixtures using salt, baking soda, vinegar, and sugar. Out of the 4 slices, they must have a control group (no ingredients used on the apple) to measure the mummification process. -Toothpick Pyramid Challenge Using a list of supplies, students must design either a freestanding square or rectangular pyramid. The goal of the challenge is to design the tallest pyramid in the shortest amount of time. Ancient Israel STEM Challenges -Masada Challenge Using a list of supplies, students must engineer a model of Masada. Their model must contain the Western and Eastern Palaces. They can be as creative as they would like in their design, but it must have three levels. Ancient India STEM Challenges -Ancient Irrigation System Challenge! Because of monsoons in the Indus Valley Civilization, the ancient people of India had to figure out a way to save the water for the remainder of the year for their crops. In this challenge, students must design a model of an ancient irrigation system by selecting one (using a page in the resource). They must use their knowledge of simple machines by incorporating either a lever or pulley system in their design. -Protect the Stupa from a Monsoon Challenge! Students must protect a stupa from flooding due to a monsoon. Materials must be added around the fence to protect water from entering the stupa. Ancient China STEM Challenges -The Great Wall of China Zipline! Using a list of supplies, students must engineer a model of the Great Wall of China. The list of supplies are not required in this challenge, they are just suggestions on what they can use. Their wall must have at least two guard towers. ****More instructions are found in the resource -Ancient Instruments: Erhu and Ruan Challenge! Using a list of supplies and an information page, students must design either an erhu or ruan instrument. The instrument must be able to produce sound and the strings must produce a variety of pitches. ******More instructions are found in the resource Ancient Greece STEM Challenges -Chariot Challenge! Using a list of supplies, students must engineer a model of a chariot. The chariot must have functioning wheels where the contraption can be pulled around while the wheels spin. Students can decide to create a cross-bow style catapult or a stone-hurling catapult. Ancient Rome STEM Challenges -Roman Aqueduct Challenge! PREFACE The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (lEA) and the gov- ernments of the participating countries, is a comparative study of education in mathematics and the sciences conducted in approximately 50 educational systems on five continents. The goal of TIMSS is to measure student achievement in mathematics and science in participating coun- tries and to assess some of the curricular and classroom factors that influence student learning in these subjects. The study will provide educators and policy makers with an unparalleled and multidimensional perspective on mathematics and science curricula; their implementation; the nature of student performance in mathematics and science; and the social, economic, and edu- cational context in which these occur. TIMSS focuses on student learning and achievement in mathematics and science at three different age levels, or populations. - Population 1 is defined as all students enrolled in the two adjacent grades that contain the largest proportion of 9-year-old students; - Population 2 is defined as all students enrolled in the two adjacent grades that contain the largest proportion of 13-year-old students; and - Population 3 is defined as all students in their final year of secondary education, includ- ing students in vocational education programs. In addition, Population 3 has two \"specialist\" subpopulations: students taking advanced courses in mathematics (mathematics specialists), and students taking advanced courses in physics (science specialists).
