My students LOVE making these fun 3D landform maps each year. Now let me just tell you- I am always wiped out by the end of the day when we make these- but they really are a blast and so meaningful to make. I first put the kids into groups of 3 or 4. Then, they used a landform map in their Social Studies book to sketch where the mountains and deserts are located. This just helps them get a start when they begin painting the plains on the map. After they have an idea of where the mountains and deserts are, they paint all of the remaining area green. This shows where the plains are located. (The hills and rivers are placed over top of the green paint in the next few steps!) Next, we used blue yarn for the rivers. We obviously didn't add ALL of the rivers but just some of the major ones- Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Columbia. The mountains were the most tempting item to add to the map! The kids were just about drooling as they glued them down. Just a quick note- if you remove the wrapping before gluing the kisses down, they stick better! Marshmallows were used for the hills, gold glitter for the desert (I've used brown rice in the past but the glitter stuck MUCH better!) and goldfish for the oceans. Each time the kids added something new to the map, they also added it to the key on the right. Their maps also included a title, compass, labels for the oceans, and a box to sign their names. I am so proud of all of the hard work that my kiddos put into these maps! They were rewarded with some of the extra snacks which they were THRILLED about =) So fun! Ok - so I wanted to make a small salt dough map of Africa for the beginning of our Africa studies. I didn't want it to be elaborate and time consuming like the one we did for Italy back week 6. So....I came up with an idea and thought I'd see how it worked. It worked well so I'm sharing it here.... I took a map of Africa. I then took wax paper and layed it over top of the map. I made up a batch of salt dough (1 cup salt, 1 cup flour and add water 1/4 cup at a time till consistency is that of playdough). Next I rolled out the dough to make it flat and placed it over the map. I then cut the map out with a soft butter knife. (In hind sight it would have been easier to just trace onto wax paper, the outline of Africa with a marker and then place that over the saltdough and cut it.) However, it worked fine for me. The next thing we did was look up a topographical map of Africa online and then form mountains and major rivers. We baked it at 250 degrees for about 30 minutes. We then painted it according to the topographical map I looked up. We used an old container (I love to recycle them for these type projects!) and placed it inside. Here is the final project:

Free Amelia Earhart Unit Study (Grades K-2)
In Ancient Egypt, a sarcophagus was usually the external layer of protection for a royal mummy, with several layers of similar shaped coffins nested within. Some of the layers were often highly decorative, and even made of gold or silver.
Our viking lapbooks created by us! Max is putting the front cover together on a lap book we designed ourselves using bits and pieces of other lap books and images we found online or from Cd's we purchased. This cover is made by TJ. All the covers were made by cutting off the bottom portion of the front flaps to make the sail. The viking hull and oars we adapted from this make-it-yourself viking boat pattern. We printed it on card stock and glued down only the bottom and the side edges so that it remained sort of a shallow pocket for the viking men to sit inside. The shields came from the viking boat we made in passport to the Middle ages ship last week, and the viking sailor is a coloring page reduced to 40 percent when printed. Max added the water below the boat on his lap book and TJ took his idea and made water on his as well. They each did the title a little differently. Max's cover includes two cleverly hidden pockets to hide hidden treasure he says. And Zak added three extra vikings to his ship and used the black and yellow colors to make it look more fierce. (the tan dragon that sort of hold the map down is also under the long house. The long house is glued down on top of the dragon portion underneath.) The vikings are mostly known for their ship building, raiding and sailing so the map shows the travels of the vikings, and the larger flip book on the right describes all the things vikings were most know for. The smaller flip book details things the vikings were less know for. Thus if you lift the map you will see more of those things. When the map is lifted up there are more items; the viking alphabet, two recipe cards for barley bread and beef stew, which slip down into the long house. The long house doors open and inside are viking men and women doing every day things. Zak is working on his long house under the table too! On the underside of the viking trading map is the term viking defined. and more info about who the vikings were. We made viking masks and the boys pretended to 'go a viking' This lap book was the culmination of our month long look at the vikings. For anyone who knows us or has been reading my blog for a while, you probably aren't surprised that Canada was chosen for our geography fair project and you probably know who's idea it was. Colin wants to live in Canada, where he imagines he'd be surrounded by hockey and find outdoor ice rinks on every corner. Since it was our first geography fair, I thought it would be best if they just did one country together. Colin immediately said Canada, but the girls weren't too thrilled with that idea. They named other countries, but never seemed set on one so I talked them into doing Canada. I figured Colin would do more of the work since he's older and should do something he's interested in. We used the Download N Go (DNG) study, Expedition Canada. From this we got to watch lots of videos showing different parts of Canada. We learned about a different animal each day, some places there, inventions, history, popular sports, Canadian cities, geography, and holidays. Some of the books we read Caleigh made this beaver, a national symbol of Canada, and this totem pole, which were made by the First Nations peoples. Lego Creations: Colin made the CN Tower and Caleigh made an inukshuk, both of which we learned about in the DNG study. In addition to DNG, we also used Homeschool Share's Canada lapbook and a Canada mini lapbook from Fortunately for You for our lapbook. I think this is the first time we've ever done an actual lapbook. We usually just add the mini books to our notebooks, but I wanted something they could display at the fair this time. We made maple cookies with real maple syrup. You can find the recipe we used here. Kids at the geography fair. Along the bottom of the table, we taped coloring pages for each of the provinces and territories.The kids spent a lot of time coloring them. Display board: It was Colin's idea to use black and red. Caleigh came up with using maple leaves under the letters in Canada. On the bottom right is a Mountie paper craft that Molly put together. Also on the board: map of Canada, map of North America, flag, popular sports, major industries, major crops, information about what the word Canada means, languages, holidays, animals, and Levi from Children Just Like Me. On the right, we brought along some of the inventions from Canada. On the left toward the front of the table is a French Canadian counting book. In this picture, you can see Colin's hockey helmet, a puck, the Lego CN Tower, and a French/English color words matching game. I'm so glad we did the geography fair. It was lots of fun showing our display and seeing everyone else's. The girls and I weren't too excited about doing Canada since it doesn't seem as exciting as some other countries, but we did learn a lot of new things and it ended up being a good study for us.
