Nader Qaimari, President of Follett School Solutions, writes about the necessity of certified librarians in schools
Atlanta Public Schools is considering eliminating 15 percent of its library media specialists positions for the upcoming school year. Library media specialists are educators with the largest classroom in the school and if you think that all a school librarian does is shelve books, you are mistaken.
Santa Fe Public Schools, like other districts in the country, has gradually cut down on the number of certified librarians on staff (just five in a district with 30 school sites).

From: Catherine Douglas Rolfe Chesapeake, Virginia Has one ever considered the crucial role the school librarian plays in student achievement? Well, in honor of School Library Month, I would like to take a minute to highlight just how essential these teachers are to the entire learning community. To begin, the school librarian is tasked with […]
Pensacola, FL – Several teens in a Pensacola neighborhood are accused of a despicable act of cruelty that claimed the life of a beloved cat fondly referred to as Little Friend. Neighborhood surveillance footage revealed the horrific details of the horrific July 16 incident; the teenagers circled the friendly, young cat, dousing her with gasoline […]
This outstanding visual is a timeless – and complete – list of reasons we should support libraries and librarians.

Don’t let hidden allergy and asthma triggers ruin your holiday cheer. Knowing where your triggers can hide during this season can reduce your chances of an asthma attack (or flare). Review your Asthma Action Plan and always keep your quick-relief (rescue) medicines with you at all times. 1. Cold, Dry Air Cold air can be an asthma trigger . When heading out into the cold, wrap a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth if you are not wearing a face mask . When you breathe through a scarf or...
A consumer advocacy group is warning parents of what it calls “dangerously high” levels of a chemical called boron in popular slime toys marketed to children – although an expert disputed the findings and said the warning is overblown.
My students and I have been celebrating winter this past week with a delightful song I learned years ago in my first Kodaly certification course. I teach this tune to K-2 children (fall verse) in late September and revisit it as the seasons change, moving from a singing game and rhythm exploration to iconic notation and composition activities, depending on students' readiness. This is a great piece for discovering or reinforcing 'la.' The children enjoy creating new lyrics for this simple but lovely melody as the seasons change. As an extension, older children enjoy switching up the solfege/rhythm cards and creating something new. You can click on these PNG files and print them. I will also post the full packet in PDF format in my store as a freebie. Enjoy! : ) Winter Icon Cards First-graders map the rhythm of the song. Second-graders map the pitch and rhythm. Singing and signing (solfa) for real-time assessment. Spring Icon Cards Summer Icon Cards Autumn Icon Cards As an extension in second grade, we list words that match our rhythm building blocks and select four to create a new song as a class. Then students work in pairs to compose original (very simple) four-phrase melodies based on rhythmic text. The kids get quite excited and pleased with their creations. It's delightful to see my youngest students so engaged in meaningful music exploration! (If you're interested, here's a link to my Rhythm Building Blocks printables, which are available in my Musical Magic TPT Store.)

I have a basic belief that I am emphatic about: all research should start in the library. Several large studies of college students have shown that those who use the library for research experience greater academic success and retention. Sadly, though, most students will flounder and even fail in their research before they ask a
Each Monday in April, the School Library Month Committee will post the quotes from the authors highlighted in Social Media the previous week, accompanied by tips offering practical suggestions for school librarians. At this Pinterest Board, you will find many examples of how to help kids find that “just right” book. What better place to
Yesterday I had the opportunity to work with a fun group of librarians in the northern part of my state who had some questions about weeding. Specifically, they were concerned about getting rid of old materials when their collections are already small and there's no money to replace the discards with shiny new replacements.I understand this concern, but when it comes to weeding, I err on the side of less being more. To me, these are the major problems with holding onto old, out of date, musty
A poster of Woody Guthrie's words. A philosophy of integrity from a North American folk hero. This was my first poster because it summarized what I wanted to do. I looked for the quote in small-town bookstores while hitchhiking and copied it down once I found it. I didn't think anyone would want a poster that wordy. Boy, was I wrong!
Once upon a time, libraries didn’t keep numbers and stats; or, if we did, we quietly kept them to ourselves. However, a recent trend in libraries is to publicize our annual numbers so that s…

The United States Air Force faces a difficult decade for acquisitions. The converging needs of a new tanker, fighter modernization, helicopter requirements, space modernization and a new bomber are too great for the service to absorb at one time--even during peacetime! This paper will show that it is not a lack of advocacy, but rather a lack of action from the USAF and a lack of fiscal support that has impaired the Next Generation Bomber (NGB). The lack of action has placed the success of the project in jeopardy and may suggest the USAF abandon the NGB in favor of the 2035 bomber. Tough choices lie ahead. This paper will use the problem-solution method of research. A detailed description of the problem will be outlined, to include historical references to support the development timeline of a new bomber. The solution will include proposals for the current administration, DoD, and Air Force. Several long-range strike options exist for the Air Force of tomorrow.

One of the best resources in my school is my librarian. I have an amazingly knowledgeable colleague who knows top to bottom, every resource on the shelf or online. Here are some things (online and off-line) that she taught me about my school library:
We know that school librarians increase student achievement. In fact, years of research show that librarians make a measurable difference for our students. This needs to be part of the important and essential conversations that we need to have as school librarians, teachers, administrators, parents and others interested and invested in the future of our children. In the Advocate's Toolbox from School Library Journal and Capstone, you can now find.... the amazing School Librarians Make a Difference infographic that our friends at Capstone have created for all of us to use as an advocacy and conversation piece. If you head to The Advocate's Toolbox, you can download the infographic here. I really love how they have laid the infographic out into 8 pages, because it will give us a chance to use pieces of this information in creative and helpful ways throughout the year. In fact, the Power of School Librarians infographic and this information can be used in so many ways. Here are a few mentioned on the page.... Include in discussions with your principal and other administrators. Post throughout your library on parents night Use to create a library fact-of-the-month display Share with your fellow teachers Add to your newsletters and website And don't forget to share this information with your students. Their voice and advocacy can be some of the best we have as librarians too. We want each and every one of our students, teachers, families and community members to definitely know the power of school librarians!
