Early this morning, I spoke to a friend in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through my webcam, the Skype video was still a little choppy, but clear enough to recognize that we were each settled into different parts our daily routines (the time difference is six hours). I took sips from a big mug of coffee, t

The year is 2050, and kids everywhere rejoice because they no longer have to do chores! Instead, they can build robots that do chores for them. There’s just one hitch: unless your students understand Area and Perimeter, the robots won’t work! In this fun activity, each student will create a different robot according to the Area and Perimeter specs on the card given to them. The result? A classroom full of paper robots ready to take on all of those chores! Well, probably only one chore: being part of a cute bulletin board display. (Unfortunately, because it’s not 2050 yet, there’s only so much a paper robot can do.) This unit was designed with differentiation in mind, because each card has either Area measurements, Perimeter measurements, or both. You can choose the best card for each student. (If you need to give students the same card, don’t worry. They can still end up with different robots.) You can also differentiate for students who are new to the skill, or ready for a challenge. Students who are new can count the squares and use regular shapes. Students who are ready for a challenge can use rulers to create irregular shapes. This is our #1 resource on TPT! With more than 5,000 reviews of 4 stars, you can’t go wrong. What’s Inside Teacher instructions Student instructions A picture showing sample robots Posters explaining what Area and Perimeter are A total of 24 instruction cards (8 Area Cards, 8 Perimeter Cards, and 8 Area and Perimeter Cards) Grid Paper you can print off for students to use for their robots I recommend using this activity toward the end of your Area and Perimeter unit, or as a review before standardized testing. This product aligns to the Common Core Standards, and any state standards that require students to solve for the area and/or perimeter of regular and irregular shapes.

Australian teacher Jenny Luca provides an unusually lengthy and detailed account of her venture into PBL with fellow teachers and her class. What I find so interesting is the way she weaves together her personal experience with numerous resources that others will find useful. I also enjoyed how Luca discussed using the Future Work Skills diagram (above) with her students as a springboard for timely reflection. -JL "What’s been incredibly encouraging is the spoken feedback I’m getting from students. I’ve heard some say they are enjoying the challenge of thinking, of directing their own learning, of working with people they don’t normally mix with. One student stayed back after class to tell me how much she was enjoying learning this way and that she’d never thought it would be possible to work like this in an English classroom. Many are excited about their ideas and are genuinely interested in seeing them come to fruition and sharing their artifact with others. Most of them have structured manageable tasks, but some have been ambitious. I’ve made a point of saying to them repeatedly that it’s the collaborative work and process that is important here, and if what they come up with falls short of their plans due to time restraints, it’s still possible to do very well on this task if they have done what is expected from them. As teachers, we decided to weight collaboration most heavily for their assessment and the students know this. They’ve been provided with the assessment breakdown so they know what they are working towards."
