This book shares with a number of recent studies an interest in the historical development of English in the United States, in how it became a central discipline in the humanities, and in what the ideological affiliations of literature and literary study might be. It is strikingly original, however, in that instead of focusing on the subject matter of English (e.g., the canon or critical positions), as most recent studies, it examines precisely how work time is spent within English departments, as well as what circulates through them, and to where. For in terms of immediate social authority, such activities as writing letters of recommendation are more directly relevant than critical methodology. The author concludes by locating cultural work in English between such massively capitalized sites of cultural production as television and advertising, and \"popular cultures,\" meaning what people do every day with whatever is cheaply available to them. English is like the former in that it requires highly developed, socially certified skills and knowledges. Like popular cultures, however, work in English is carried out with readily available material means. By recognizing this actual situation, he argues, one can view English as not just passively reproducing the existing system of social values, but as working within popular culture to provide the possibility of meaningful political opposition.
Current event and general interest articles are a wonderful resource for students. They can be used for researching a topic, staying informed on what's happening in the news, pleasure reading, and more. In the past I have shared some creative ways to use online articles as part of technology activities for student creativity and reading comprehension. For example: Improve Reading Comprehension with Google Docs "Black Out" - Blog Post Link Black Out Poetry with Google Docs - Blog Post Link Additionally Google recently added a new lesson to their Applied Digital Skills curriculum called "Annotate Text in Google Docs". This activity covers how to take an article, copy and paste it into Google Docs, and then make digital notes to understand the article using comments, highlighting, tables, and more. One big question, however, is where to find good articles. Over the years I have come across many excellent resources for articles that are written specifically for students. See below for my current list of these sites. Student Article Websites Below is a list of useful websites that provide current event and general interest articles for students. Many of these sites provide additional resources such as: Articles written at multiple reading levels (Lexile levels) Quizzes over the article content Discussion questions or writing prompts Options for students to leave comments on the articles Audio versions of the articles All of these sites are free, although some may require you to register to log in, or to provide your students with a code to access the articles. Some of the sites also have paid versions with additional features, but all provide at least access to the articles at no cost. This list is certainly not complete, so please feel free to share your suggestions in the comments below for additional sources for articles that should be added. Note: The list is arranged alphabetically, not by order of preference. #1 - CommonLit Website - https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts This site has a free collection of fiction and nonfiction for 3rd-12th grade classrooms, searchable by lexile, grade, theme, genre, literary device, or common core standard. #2 - DOGOnews Website - https://www.dogonews.com Current event articles covering news, science, social studies, world events, environment, sports, and more. #3 - KidsPost Website - https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/kidspost/ This site is from the Washington Post, with articles specifically written for students. #4 - KiwiKids News Website - https://kiwikidsnews.co.nz/ This site is from New Zealand but provides excellent articles on world events as well as general interest topics. #5 - Learn With News Website - https://learnwithnews.com/ Current event articles, each written at three different reading levels, including resources for difficult words, activities, vocabulary practice, conversation questions, and more. #6 - NY Times Article of the Day Website - https://www.nytimes.com/spotlight/learning-article-of-the-day This site takes one New York Times article per day and pairs it with detailed questions for pre-reading, discussion, and writing. #7 - News For Kids Website - https://newsforkids.net Daily updated with articles covering world news, science, sports, arts, and more. #8 - Newsela Website - https://newsela.com This is one of the best known sites for student articles, with each article written at five different reading levels. #9 - ReadWorks Website - https://www.readworks.org/ Thousands of passages including articles, paired texts, fiction and nonfiction, and more. #10 - Science News for Students Website - https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org Science, health and technology news stories and features, aimed at readers 9 to 14 years old. #11 - Student Daily News Website - https://www.studentnewsdaily.com/ Content for students including a daily news article, world events, editorials, and more, #12 - Teaching Kids News Website - http://teachingkidsnews.com/ This site provides current event news articles for students in grades 2 through 8, along with thinking questions and discussion prompts. #13 - Time for Kids Website - https://www.timeforkids.com/ News and articles from Time, written for students K through 6th grade. When I teach writing in my classroom, I teach it as a process. Every part of the writing process, from the initial brainstorming to peer editing, is equally important and integrally essential to the final draft. It is also important to know how to teach peer editing in an effective way.

If you are looking to try something new with your students or if you would like to enhance your existing unit on debating, this blog post is for YOU! I am going to share a few fun ideas that you can easily incorporate into your classroom. The goal of this blog post is to help teachers organize, plan and execute effective inquiry-based classroom debates. So, if you are ready to get started, check out the tips below to get started! 1. Start with some teen-related discussion topics One of the easiest ways to draw in your students is to start with some topics that would be relatable to them. If students are trying to give an opinion on a topic that they can't relate to, it will be difficult to get the discussion going. First, display four signs in your room ('strongly agree', 'agree', 'strongly disagree' and 'disagree'). Not only will you get your students thinking, but you can also give them a break from the everyday work period and get them moving as well. Once you read out the opinion-related prompts, your students can go towards the sign in the classroom where their belief stands. Ask a student or two each round why they have the opinion that they do. You may even encounter a few students who change their minds during the process - this is encouraged! This shows that deeper-level thinking is going on. Here are a few topics that you could use with a middle or high school classroom. - School uniforms should be mandatory - Schools should always give out homework - Cell phones should be allowed in class - The school day should not be extended - Rap music does not influence behavior - Post-secondary education should not be free Let them have their say on the topics, then put students in groups of two or three to come up with their own possible debate topics. 2. Review key debate terms Once the students have had an opportunity to give an opinion on a few debate topics, you can now begin the process of reviewing some key debate terms. These terms are important to learn before going into a debate, so that they can be referred to throughout the debate process. In my Classroom Debate Outline mini-unit, I list 14 different debate terms and their definitions. These are the terms that I feel are important for students to recognize and understand, but you are definitely not limited to this list. Saying that, I feel like it encompasses the terms that students should know before the process begins. Classroom Debate Outline & Activities 3. Share some general debating tips Like most school assignments and activities, there is a process and a set of expectations to follow. Debating is no different. To help your students get a better understanding of what's expected, go over a few general debating tips with them. Some they may expect, but others they may not. It's important to be aware of these tips. Due to the fact that this may not be the most engaging topic for your students in the process of learning how to create a debate, I created some encrypted puzzles on various general debating tips. My goal was to make this as engaging as possible. You can find these debating tips as a part of one of the challenges in this Debate Escape Room. 4. Do your research and learn the format Research. Research. Research. Three important elements in any debate. Students need to be aware that they are not only researching their side of the argument, but the other side as well. They need to be aware of both sides, so they can adequately defend their arguments when needed. Grab this FREE Debate Research Outline to help you get started! Students will be required to brainstorm what they already know about the topic, then they will have an opportunity to look a little closer into a topic by completing some initial research. This outline would be a practice activity to use with a general topic first, then once they have a better idea, this outline can be used as a start for their actual debate topic. There's a lot of flexibility with the outline. 5. Prepare and execute the debate This process will likely take your students a few weeks. I allow a good amount of time during the stage of preparation because students need time to plan and PRACTICE! Just as important as the actual debate itself is the preparation - it will show if a group is not prepared. 6. Follow-up the unit with extension activities I don't know about you, but I usually follow-up my debate unit with an essay. Why? The essay format and the debate format are similar. Students need to be able to identify support for their side of an argument, then support that side with facts that they have found. Here are a few ways that you can "sell" this to your students. I hope this blog post gave you a better idea, as to how you can incorporate the skill of debating into your classroom. Here are some other resources that you might find helpful! Welcome to my listings on Etsy! I’m yet another refugee from the other site, you know, the one I can’t mention by name because I’m too afraid of getting a “cease and desist” letter from their legal department. Yes, THAT website. I do NOT make obscene profit on shipping & handling. If I overcharge it is only for the sake of convenience in listing; you only pay the actual shipping and any balance is refunded to you. That said, I’ve been selling a long time and I pride myself on being the most honest seller on the web. I bend over backwards to provide excellent photos, short but concise descriptions and measurements when there is no manufacturer’s size/spec tag. Having said that, I do not provide additional measurements or photos because in my many years of selling I learned that people almost never purchase the item! Sorry, but I have to do what is in my best interest and that means saving time, MY time. If there is a maker’s flaw, rip, tear, stain, bald spot or otherwise damage worth showing, then I’ll show it in the photos and/or mention it in the Item Title or Item Description. Cat fur included at no extra charge. That means that I have two cats in my house and I let them sleep on any damned thing that they want to, including my merchandise even as I photograph it for listing. I do not smoke and neither do my cats. I use the US Postal Service and will insure anything over $25 value. I am NOT responsible for the item once it leaves my house, especially when it lands in a foreign country! ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Boots are in used, very good to excellent condition. Large late 19th century stoneware jardiniere, a Royal Doulton Isaac Walton Series Ware piece by Charles Noke (English, 1858-1683). This large jardiniere has three handles and is decorated with several detailed figures; characters based on the 17th century English author Isaac Walton's book The Complete Angler (1653). A tree motif decorates the upper rim, the inside of which is printed with quotes related to fishing. Signed "Noke" on the lower side of the piece, beside one of the figures. Stamped "Royal Doulton / Isaac Walton Ware" on base, with serial number 7061. Measures 11" H x 13" D. Charles John Noke (1858 Worcester - 27 May 1941), was an English pottery designer and artist who primarily worked for Royal Doulton. He is noted for producing many different ranges of pottery using differing techniques and was also hugely influential in helping Doulton establish itself as a world leader. After he joined Doulton in 1889 he became the Art Director and was able to affect all aspects of production at the Burslem site and in doing so instigated a revolution in both design and production turning Doulton into the leading art manufacturer of the age. Noke's greatest achievement was the creation of a range of experimental transmutation glazed wares that are at best as good as anything produced at Sèvres, Copenhagen, Dresden or even in the Far East. These ranges, the Flambes, Titanian, Sung, Chinese Jade, Chang and Crystalline represent one of the greatest contributions to studio pottery made by a large British manufacturer in this century. He is also well known for launching the HN figurines (named after Harry Nixon who was in charge of the figure painting department). This naming convention for figurines still endures today. Noke contributed significantly to the character studies and some of his designs, The Jester, The Potter and The Cobbler are among the most recognisable and enduring characters produced by Doulton. He was also known for his designs of other colourful 'Eastern' characters. Noke joined Royal Worcester as an apprentice modeler in 1873, aged 16, whilst also attending the Worcester School of Design. Noke's work at Worcester caught the eye of Doulton's Art Director John Slater (whom Noke would later succeed) and after 16 years at Royal Worcester (1889) Noke joined Royal Doulton as Chief Designer working from the Nile Street site in Burslem. Noke's early career at Doulton was spent modelling and decorating pieces to be displayed at exhibitions around the world, most notably the Chicago World Fair in 1893. It was Noke's ambition to rival the other major pottery manufacturers of the day and Doulton mounted an extensive display of large, ornate and highly decorated vases and plates. Noke is credited with reviving the fortunes of Figurines in the Potteries and in particular at Doulton where he was able to persuade Henry Doulton that he could design figures that would sell. In the early 1890s Noke began to experiment with figure models, the first of these being shown at the Chicago Fair. From 1909 Noke and fellow designers started to work on the design and production of what was to become the HN Series of figurines. These were first launched in 1913 with Bedtime (HN1), this was later changed to Darling after a comment, "Isn't he a little Darling?", from Queen Mary whose patronage helped to establish the series. It was from these beginnings that the vast range of Doulton figures can be found today. Noke is credited with some of Doultons most famous creations: Flambe Ware, Kings Ware, Series Ware and Character Jugs.Doulton's Flambe Ware is very striking with its fiery red colour and there were a variety of different pieces produced with this finish. Doulton's first flambe finished products were exhibited at the St. Louis Exhibition in 1904. The Kings Ware glaze effect developed by Noke had a rich brown finish to it. It was used to produce many advertising items and was made by Doulton from 1901 to 1939. The concept of Series Ware was to decorate a range of different ceramic items, e.g. plates, vases etCentury with the same theme/ pattern thus making them belong together as part of a series. Noke popularised this with his series of Dickens characters. Character Jugs varied from the traditional Toby Jugs in that they only featured the head and shoulders of a character. They were also more brightly coloured than the traditional Toby Jug. Doulton first introduced these character jugs in 1934 with Noke's own John Barleycorn. Noke was Art Director at Doulton from 1914 until he retired from the position in 1936, aged 78. Noke continued to work at Doulton until his death in 1941. less
Built from white portland stone and opened in 1958 is Lewis's Department Store (that is Lewis's of Bristol NOT John Lewis) the largest in the city. In later years it was bought by John Lewis, and then HOF and then Bentalls and is now a Primark. During the excavation for the foundations, hundreds of human bones were found, being the mass burial site for Plague/Black Death victims, the bones were removed under religious rights and reburied on consecrated ground. Bristol was the first place in England to suffer from the Black Death in 1348, it was thought to have been brought to our shores by shipping as Bristol was an important port at that time. image (D.J. No major rips, tears, stains or odors to mention. No cracking or stiffness of the leather uppers or soles. Not sure if these are men's or women's sizes. No doubt the Left will have something to say about that. Height, heel to top: 19 inches Circumference of ankle: 13 inches Circumference of calf: 14.5 inches Shipping weight is seven (7) lbs. from zip code 86314 and they will NOT fit in the USPS large flat rate box. A note about buying boots online: Your boot size is NOT necessarily your "sneaker" or "training" shoe size! Before buying a boot, make sure that you know it will fit you by either looking at the boots in your closet or, less desirable, go to a surplus store and try on boots of a similar type. REMEMBER: I do not take returns as stated in my Seller's Policy.
