Gung Hei Fat Choi! I didn't plan any projects for Chinese New Year given my class themes at this time. But here are two projects that would work this year. Depending on who you talk to, it could be the year of the sheep or goat - I guess it's a regional thing. I did these winter sheep a couple years ago. They were created on brown or blue construction paper with chalk pastels and were cut out and glued to a watercolor background. The Chinese Zodiac says that people born in the year of the Sheep or Goat (which I happen to be) "want a bit of peace" and "enjoy carrying on with their life in their own individual way." Bingo! These colorful Chinese lanterns made last year at this time, were great fun for my students to create and were a basic way of teaching 3 dimension with the use of ellipses. The possibilities are endless! Artwork is done in oil pastel with a watercolor background and printed dots of white acrylic for white lights.
Enjoy a recycled craft this Spring and Easter with these super fluffy and fun Packing Peanut Sheep Puppets.
Every year, mid February at Ron and Ann Fay's Rising Meadow Farm in Grays Chapel, North Carolina means sheep shearing, and this was the week. Ann and Ron are fortunate to have master blade shearer Kevin Ford come in to do the job. Kevin is world class (he's a member of the US Blade Shearing Team that competes in the World championships in New Zealand) and it is amazing and fascinating to watch him work. Blade shearing is done with hand powered shears, no electricity here. Sharp blades, care and finesse is the order of the day. Kevin was assisted this year by local shearer Joy Moore. While Kevin and Joy worked the sheep, Ann with the help of friends and neighbors, inspected, cleaned and weighed the fleeces which will be on sale this Saturday. The beginning of spring is heralded by the arrival of sweet, spring lambs. Related to antelopes and muskoxen, these mammals are ruminants with many having large, curling horns and are wonderful animals for kids to learn about, with Spring being the perfect time.

After reading about Almanzo’s day sheep shearing in “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder, we were inspired. We used “Farm Anatomy” by Julia Rothman to learn all about the different parts of a sheep and the various ways in which they are sheared. The girls had a mini-hands-on experience with this with the help of our Playmobil sheep set and a little bit of cotton wool.
